I had some dryland alfalfa about an hour south of Sacramento, not by choice but on established alfalfa on heavy adobe with a high water table. Alfalfa will go dormant in the Summer heat without irrigation, but this is on established hay with a good root system. The first time we experienced with this is was late 90’s early 2000’s when we had to pull our river pump mid summer, so when we got the pump back all of the water had to goto our tomato crop. The field came back the next year better than ever. Then in 2014 we had a number of established alfalfa fields that were abandoned and that was used for sheep pasture, the fields came back just as good. We would plant after the first good rain in late November, and the winter rains would get it going, but you would probably only get 1 or 2 tons, then hopefully you would have enough subsoil moisture to keep it over the summer without irritation. The biggest upside I would see, even if you have to replant is it would give you a rotation to a broadleaf that would give you more control options help get that wild oat and foxtail under control. The lower yield might give you a better forage yield once you get that foxtail and wild oat cleaned up. You have to go back to the late 1800’s to see dryland alfalfa research publications in the Central Valley, they leveled fields and put in irrigation districts for this crop for a reason. In 1914 our district was 95% alfalfa
