I remember, prior to 911, being given the privilege to fly jump seat as a non airline employee a few times. I just politely asked and showed my logbook. If they had time, they'd invite me up. Great experiences I wont forget. One favorite was an approach and landing at LHR from JFK.

This video was much more than the title suggested - rare these days. As a CFI in training I'm grateful that you shared what its like in the right seater of the big boys. Makes me super excited for my journey ahead. Subbed!

Regardless of occupying the jump seat or given a seat in the back…. asking for a ride vs “Hey, I’m in the back”, is much more acceptable. Some Captains might ask you to exit, and try it again 😳. Don’t let that be you! Fun video Ern….
I’m ATC and we’re allowed to do up to two “flight deck training” trips a year, staffing permitting at our facilities. I always love doing my fam trips and learn a lot, and it’s great to bring that interaction between pilots and ATC.

@@FlyingwithBigErn thanks, I’d love to! Haven’t flown SWA yet, so far been on ASA, HAL, DAL, FDX, UPS, always a great experience!
Being a commuter, I understand the necessity of jumpseating. It's also great if the crew (particularly the pilots) are commuters too, simply because they know the struggle. Nobody likes to jumpseat, but it's a seat and it'll get you to and from work. So having a crew that is friendly and helpful makes for a great flight. Sometimes, depending on the crew, you want to jumpseat, cause it's good conversations and tips from people who may have more experience. Plus, good networking.
Right on! I'm a regional dispatcher and I've ridden the jumpseat on our mainline and other reciprocal airlines while going to see family and friends. They crews are always very welcoming and ask me a ton of questions and it's always a pleasure. Such a privilege.
To recap - Jump seat etiquette: "Say thanks and dont be a POS" lol
Ern, awesome videos you put out out here! I don’t work in the aviation industry , but I have always enjoyed reading and learning. I learn something new each time I watch your videos. You are a great resource for up and coming pilots and folks working for the industry. Great ambassador for your company too. Keep up the great work!
Getting the left seat warm Captain and adding the oil. Great video as always with lots of encouragement and guidance for the future aviators. Thank you Ern and safe travels ✈️
So glad the max is back flying! It's a beautiful aircraft.
This video came in clutch. I was procrastinating studying for my FIA coming up and it reminded me what I’m working towards. Thanks a lot Ern!
Flew into Phoenix last week finally had one of them famous breakfast burritos you kept talking about thanks BigErn!!🤩
Currently working on my CPL and found this in my recommended videos. I was not expecting to finish a "Jump Seat Etiquette" video with this much motivation. Thanks for the content, definitely earned my sub.
Super grateful youtube put this on my recommended list. I’m hoping to get a job as a dispatcher next year and jumpseating is the one thing im most excited about.
This video was so amazing! I don't have any particular interest in airplanes (just doing some research for a story), but your smile was so contagious I ended up watching the whole video. It's so cool getting a look behind the scenes, I really respect all the work you guys do!
Found this in my recommendations for new channels....you have so much charisma and charm to go with all that knowledge. Bet this channel goes nothing but up!
Doode amazing videos! Love it so much!! Such a big inspiration to me and my love for flying!! Just got in the a mail a Southwest Airlines Max 8 model babyyyy!!!!! Time to start the collection and that was the first one I purchased! Thanks for being awesome man, you make my day everyday I watch ur videos!
30 years as ZAU Controller and SWA was always my favorite to jump seat on. Crews are great to fly and to work with. My last trip was with them, I took it specifically to fly with them and out and in to midway one more time.
Friendly and polite attitude along with great sense of humor of everyone who's working in and operating the passenger plane has significant impact on the travelers to feel comfortable and not to worry about how dangerous flying it could be. The Captain in this video is a very good example of that very same attitude. I never hesitate to fly with him and his crew. All what I have to say to him is: 🌟🍷 Job well done!🍷🌟 👍Keep up the Good Work! Thanks.
Just passed my instrument checkride and start commercial this week! So excited!

SWA ramper here, and I could not agree with you more about how great it is to get to go to work and play with airplanes every day! Great video!
Another great informative video especially doing the departure check and we could listen in on it . You are a great ambassador for pilots and Southwest !,
Ern, I thoroughly enjoyed your explanation of flying in the jump seat. And, you also answered a question I've been wanting to ask - when flying deadhead, do you sit next to/near the exit door. Great video! It is a joy when I get the notification of a new video!
Thank you for making me aware of Southwest’s pilot program! I’m planning on moving out to Phoenix in the next year anyways and wanted to start my career there. sounds like I need to start planning to apply
Former F-15 Crew chief I am glad I can live vicariously through you! Unfortunately Im in a position where I cant peruse a career in aviation but just came home on a SWA -700 from OAK!
Loved my trip flying from Geneva to CPH, only 35 people on the flight! Feel right a sleep over the 3 seats in the back. The stewardess even came with 2 pillows and a blanket. Best flight ever!
Thank you for sharing your comments here. Your are right about the calm etiquette of jump seating I think many airline are the same for the most part in general with a couple of things that maybe a little different. Every time I have had Pilots and Flight Attendants who were not checked in as space available or (SA) in a passenger seat because of none available they would ask the CSA to come down the jet bridge to the aircraft and asked to speak to Purser of "A" of the flight to make a jump seat request. After I would always let the captain requests staff were there waiting to ask them as well. After come onboard, I would let them know that there was luggage space in first class closets or where space would be in overheads. But if our flight was not full then I let the Pilots and FAs know where seats where and let them take a seat in the cabin. Life in our industry for the most part is nice.
Thanks for doing these Ern! Fun to watch
I love that second to the last row. Next to the window. Besides the exit rows, I find that it has a tad more leg space
Awesome work. Loving the videos!
Another great video big Ern! Travel safe and keep showing the LUV!!
I totally agree on seat selection. Especially when i am filming takeoffs and landings
How times have changed in the fact that as a kid the pilot was untouchable, a person aloof that wouldn't and couldn't be approached. Your videos are exceptional. Thanks
I know...Big Erin...I get a thrill at just waiting to pick someone up as I get to see the jets flying in an out...at my home airport..the big jets come in so close to the car park you can reach out and touch them almost. Love it. Thank you for the work you do to give us videos. Look forward to each and every one.

Great video Erin. I worked at SNA and LAX and worked as CSM with WN until the one with the AA 😆 just retired this week. I may run into you one day(Standby). Great video. Stay safe
Dispatcher from Canada. I've never Jumpseated (in the back) with Southwest, but have on other airlines. I'm always in, say Hi and what I do but also try to be responsive to time. Some airlines have you board last so you want to be ready and not mess around so you aren't the reason a flight is late. Had a crew ask me to stick around afterward to ask questions about Dispatching in Canada which was awesome. Also get to ride in the Jump on my airline for my dispatch qual, and my airline encourages jumpseating as often as you like given some restrictions so you aren't jumping the standby line.
My first video I watched on your channel, love the positive attitude and I subscribed immediately!

I love being an airport rat. I encourage people who are interested in the becoming a pilot to just hang out at the local field. You'll be surprised who you meet and what you see. It's how I got my start as a pilot. My first flight was with the local flight school's mechanic who wanted help picking up parts. That led to my first lesson and the rest is history. Other interactions led to a ride along with Air Med and a few flights in a banner tow.
Great video. Always love the advice. I’m taking my IR check ride in about 2 weeks. Ready to move on to commercial
Love hearing about to the future of hiring in aviation, just had my third flight and my second landing logged! I’m stoked, looking forward to getting 1500 hours over the next couple of years!
Hey Big Ern, Just found your channel, I'm a mechanic here in Dallas. Love riding the jumpseat with you guys. If you ever have any technical questions or anything about maintenance, I'd be glad to answer them for you. If you're ever in Dallas and want to tour the hangar, hit me up! Always glad to talk airplanes!

Just found your channel and subscribed. This video interesting as my dad worked BA (ground staff). Got to use staff travel until my mid 20s and had 757 cockpit jump seat a few times between LHR and my home city EDI or GLA. Great views coming home. Ate breakfast behind the captain once, hoping I wouldn't spill it. Last jump seat was LHR/BOS upper deck on a 747. It was a tip down bench at the top of the stairs though. Not the best, no tv or window, however right by a galley so got supplied with drinks and snacks as I wanted. All good!
very cool video! I’m a dispatcher for a regional airline right now, but I still found this video very helpful. I’m hoping to make it to Southwest eventually!
I JUST did my first jumpseat and was trying to remember the etiquette but for got and was just polite and made sure to request the privilege from the PIC and try to not be in the way of the crew on-board doing their preflight duties. Thanks and looking forward to doing more of it! I was addicted before but now I am HOOKED on aviation! -New Dispatcher

That first time is always awkward lemme tell ya. Helps if the first time is with your airline.
You seem to have a great personality and attitude! Excellent! 👍👍
Thank you for reminding Jump seating pilots to check in with the lead/A flight attendant. If I can add don't be offended if we ask to see your badge. It is the policy at some carriers that prior to entering the flight deck your ID be checked.
I am an airplane junkie too. Spent 20years in the Air Force fixing avionics, and then 22years working for a contractor on military aircraft. Also got my private, commercial, instrument and instructor. Flew with Civil Air Patrol out of Litchfield. Enjoy your videos
I enjoyed this segment from your ATP FO perspective. I am an aviation enthusiast, and it is probably why our oldest son became a pilot in USAF (MO and SJ) He has been a FO for SWA for nearly 6 years.

Hi Ernie, very much enjoy your channel and content. Something in this latest brought up memories of a bye gone time, a time with at least three in the cockpit (ya I know flight deck). Any way back then I was pushing around what most thought was a damn fine aircraft the DC6. Back in those days it was not uncommon the have a Capt.., First Officer, Flight Engineer and Navigator. Those great instruments of today's aviation weren't even dreamed of. We had flights bags with what seemed like 50 pounds of nav charts. Over the years as improvements have taken place the flight-deck has shrunk down to two people and some knuckle heads are saying one???? I had the sad experience of flying with the last flight engineer in our company, when he retired so did the engineers position! Looks like airlines are trying to reinvent the wheel, point to point flying and no more spoke and hub. Well enough from an old timer, stay safe, get that forth bar and enjoy the greatest job in the world!!!!! AND remember there are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are not any old, bold pilots!✈
Former SWA Ramper here out of KSTL. I left to make enough money to pursue my real dream. Currently an Instrument rated pilot and about 70 hours left for my commercial. 100% the best thing about working at the airport is getting to see all the planes. At Lambert we have the Boeing factory and everyone from Rampers to FO’s on their walkarounds would stop in their tracks to watch the F-18’s and F-15’s do their unrestricted climbs will full afterburners. Very neat to see this perspective! Luv the MAX, was still working there the day we retired the -300’s and remember the first MAX coming in. (We broke one within the first month when they clipped the new blended winglets. Oops lol) Absolute Luv and miss my airline! Hope to be back and up front some day with you guys!
Great video, Big Ern!
Good video. Always interesting.
I no longer have to commute, but when I did I had to be in the cockpit jumpseat every week or two. When they tell you to board, check in with the captain, make sure your docs are ready, then just wait out on the jet bridge until boarding is complete because they aren’t gonna have you pull out the jumpseat and be seated until they close the main cockpit door. Oh, and observe sterile cockpit. I’ve chatted with some great crews, (haven’t with southwest, but with Delta) but be prepared to be sore after a few hours, it is not a comfortable seat 😂
G,day BigErn from Sydney Australia. That was a pleasure to watch: great video of your job. * Good news for pilots, that the airlines are recruiting staff. * Nice to see the pilot's rest and reclining area: good fellowship and chatting. * The flight plan and clearance sheet was interesting. I'm looking forward to Jumpseating when I get my ADX done and get my Dispatch certification. I've only flown a handful of times, and it was many, many years ago. But, I've always loved aviation, and want to get back into the sky. Even if I am mostly planning flights from the ground.
Required also for a dispatcher to fly in the flight deck I do think once a year to be current on their dispatch etc.. They are 50% responsible for the flights when they are doing their duties. I do not know about A&P Mechanics but it would be nice to have one just in case.. We know the pilots like to break the planes :D

I just found your channel and I'm in love with it automatically. Just want to let you know that I was a travel agent and know all about free travel. Travel agents as well we have protocols when we flew on an AD100. One time I was flying WN on my birthday I flew LAX-ABQ with a stop in ELP going and returning (on the same day) we had a stop in PHX and I had to get off and wait for the next flight to continue onto LAX as there was a paying passenger who would of been stranded as the flight was fully booked. I was immediately accommodated when I gave their gate agent that I was flying on an AD100. I was promised that I would be placed on the next flight.

One thing that sucks is after you retire there are no more jumpseats. :) I retired in 2012 and used Southwest a lot and they were very good to me. Thanks for all the rides.
I was always told a gift card goes a long way with f/a’s and gate crew. A writer used to say, speak when spoken to in the flight deck as well. Lol
Hi Big Ern! I'm a flight Dispatcher with Skywest and we also have jumpseat priviledges! In fact we have to log several hours each year in our own metal per FAA regs. Mine is coming up in April. But we have jumpseat agreements with nearly every airline. I'd love to ride on one of your flights now that you're a Captain! As a fellow plane geek I'm sure we'd have a lot to talk about up there.
