This week I've composed a Jump Blues lead study for you to dig into. We throw everything into this one.. that wicked fusing of so many key guitar styles, from jazz and swing to blues and boogie-woogie! Think players like Junior Watson, Bill Jennings, Charlie Bay, Tiny Grimes, Charlie Christian, Billy Butler and Sean Costello.
Raw sophistication is the aim of the game here.. hard swinging and heavy grooving bebop-infused blues lines delivered with the searing tone of a 50's Strat into a 50's tweed amp cranked up to within an inch of it's life. Oh that sweet, sweet grind! 👌🏻🔥

Thanks Alex! If I could only play one style this would be it! Over 40 years ago I was playing piano in a blues based band and one of our guitar players was good friends with Michael Mann AKA Hollywood Fats. He would sit in with us from time to time and completely blow my mind!! I've been addicted ever since!!

Another Five Star video, Alex! I'm a big fan of jump blues and all the great players of that era. Excellent backing track and your guitar sounds great as well. I love the live studio sound of that era in recording history, as exemplified by all those wonderful King and Federal Records made in their historic Cincinnati studio. It's like you are in the room with them. The list on Wikipedia of all those King records by so many legendary artists like Earl Bostic and Freddie King is just amazing. As far as I'm concerned, I'l take that sound over digital any day! Back in the days when the music came first, not the technology.

@@AlexFarranGuitar oh heavens no! I have a custom shop reissue 57 with a chunky V-neck. It’s a little too relic for me as far as a neck goes but the body looks great. It’s a like almost like gold foil paint over Sunburst heavy and I just think it looks cool as hell but that’s only 50. I have a couple 60s the 68 land out in the 63 land out, which are both awesome. I got a ton of guitars way too many all of them were bought used and I only have one real vintage guitar, which is my dark burst 65 L5 custom with a factory installed gold d’armond pup. it would be the perfect arch top guitar the next a little thin but once I play it for a few minutes, I get over that, but I really don’t pull it out much arch tops kinda give me a backache from reaching over the top of them.

Cool lesson that brings back a lot of memories. I was walking in Berkeley California with my girlfriend summer 1986 when I heard a howling harmonica and overdriven hollow body sound coming out of some dungeon club, so had to take a look. And lighting it up was Little Charlie Baty, Rick Estrin, and the other Nightcats who were completely unknown to me at the time. I was gobsmacked. The night I saw him, he alternated between a Strat and an absolutely gorgeous ES-150. Here's a video very close to what I saw. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJqur6SOc9fLp6g.html
