Love how the patterns turn out, the dresses and slacks looks so nice. Love all of them. In the past I also did make my son lots of shirts, to use for school. And everyone would say where did you buy this, and he would say my mother make them. Well he was the school model and the girls just loved his shirts...😂 and I make for my husband, thy easy and one can really make them beautiful and unique .....special. Nobody will have a shirt like that. You bring out good memories from me...😘 🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹

Hi Viv, less than 4 minutes in, I had big smiles at your hubby modeling what you sewed for him. I used to make custom jeans for my husband and he loved when I told my friends I made them. They would exclaim "Really" and run their hands up and down the seams... while he was wearing them... He LOVED it! :) I also made suits for him in the past, but now we just do Hawaiian shirts for him, and his brothers... Back to the show... :)

Oh thank you, Linda! I found that fabric @ Fabric Mart when we visited and it was $1.99/yard which blows my mind. It is very sturdy but luxurious cotton, maybe even a decorator fabric. It keeps its structure very well and has become one of his favorite shirts. I like the pattern now that I’ve gotten the fit down.😃

Love the story about the 87 yr old woman working in the fabric department, and love the simplicity 8694 top. Especially the sleeves. I might make the ruffle wider and set in on a little higher, for me. I've been looking for a similar pattern, but could maybe do that with any pattern. Just thinking out loud. I love your makes.

Good idea about 8694. It’s a little snug at the hip line, I wonder why they didn’t design it wider. My hips are relatively narrow. And I think the ruffle needs to be wider as well. It’s a cute top. Jean is still in the sewing department at Walmart! She’s getting closer to 90. Can you imagine?!

I am new to your channel but have watched many of your videos, and this is my favorite! I loved every pattern and every fabric! I also like loose clothes, so I totally get that... hahaha. I retired 2 weeks ago, so hopefully I can spend some quality time sewing now. In another video you asked if we would like to see your sewing machines. If you have made that video I can’t find it. YES, please make that video! I have an old Singer 403C which I love and do not anticipate replacing. I also have a Brother serger, that one everyone recommends. Haven’t used it yet but I will. ,

Well come on in, Snow Girls, it’s great to have you here!😄I had a long hiatus from sewing when life got busy with a baby at 38 (my older two were 9 and 12; that was almost 18 years ago.) I made a dress out of the blue 2 1/2 years ago and was hooked. And it’s just grown from there, right along with my formidable fabric and pattern supply.😱My favorite thing to do is sew up patterns and then show them on a real person. If you get a little entertainment and inspiration along the way, so much the better. Welcome.🌸

Made my first tunic the other day without a pattern, so now I'm ready to roll.

I am loving this channel, I just discovered you tonight and am working my way through all the videos. You must have some great fabric shops where you are. I have to get any fabric online, as it does not appear people do much sewing here, so there are no fabric shops in my city. (I am in Scotland). I don't know anyone that sews, so I love watching sewing channels. Looking forward to watching some more of your videos tomorrow, they are fabulous!

Blessings on you, Mel, thanks for all your comments and greetings to Scotland!😃 I buy most of my fabric online. Gone are the days of local fabric shops around the corner, and I miss them. It was a leap to online buying, as obviously the material cannot be felt before committing. A lot of people utilize a swatch option when buying online, to be able to see and touch a small sample before ordering yardage. I just take my chances. I’ve had very few duds, mostly great stuff!👍

Found your videos last night. I have sewn since I was about 8 and I'm 66 now. About 18 years ago my daughter got married and she tasked me with making her veil which went well and two little flower girl dresses. The main part of the dresses had to be done early so they could try them on. But I left the hems till the last minute (the night before the wedding) They had horsehair inside the hem to make them stand out and I tossed aside the instructions and went for doing it myself. The instructions were complicated. Needless to say I was UP ALL NIGHT redoing the hems. I literally showed up at the church with the dresses with zip, zero, nada, sleep and a very long day ahead of me. (I was a night shift nurse so used to being up all night, but I didn't get so much as a nap during the day). I was dying by the evening reception. My daughter rubbed it in. "This is why I didn't let you make MY dress" .. At least look at the pattern instructions so there are no surprises!

It's so fun watching your videos, Viv! You are an excellent seamstress. I have three thoughts to consider. !0 When you do pocket placement do it wearing the item. 2) Think about how you want the pattern to go across the body and match it at side seams, cf and cb. Take the cooking--"Refrigerator surprise" approach to making things for hubby by combining 2 patterns like a cool collar from one and a great sleeve from another or take a costume pattern and modernized by adjusting the fit. Before I went to college to be a fashion designer I never looked at match anything except plaids. From the flow into a pocket to the flow around the body that extra TLC takes clothing to couture level;. A million blessings to you Viv!

Thanks Barbara! I appreciate your expertise and advice. I’m not sure my clothing could ever attain couture status, but then again neither will my lifestyle, lol. I don’t buy plaids because of the matching aspect (generally they’re just “not me” anyway) so to start matching all the side seams might give me pause - but I do realize you’re the expert and I thank you so much for caring enough to comment!😄💕

Heya Vivmom. Your makes are great! You really got a lot done! I like your jean skirt and noticed when you pulled up the top, how flattering it was. Maybe shorten or tuck that shirt in? You got a cute figure, it shows it off when you had it pulled up. Ok , men's patterns :0 soooo hard. I have found Burda young mens has better choices and I stumbled on those by accident. Thread Theory indie patterns has good choices but, you know, you pay for better choices! Collette and Jalie had some also but I just got a fun book for $25 on sale that contains 14 patterns from coat to wallet/accessories. It's called The Gentlemen's Wardrobe, vintage style for the modern man. It has basic flat front pants, etc. My sons are like your hubby, quite tall and slender.I can't wait to try these, I just got it but a bargain price for what you get! Plus beautiful photos and illustrations. Paper patterns in the back. But you are doing great on his looks! Go you!

Wow, that book you scored sounds great, Jodie! Nice! Thanks for all these kind words. I'm afraid I never wear anything tucked in. But that skirt pattern IS flattering. The possibilities are endless with that one, and I love the pockets for grocery lists (I still write my lists on paper!) and keys. I have a men's pants pattern by Burda Young. Skinny pants. I hope I can get the fit right for him! Those Kwik Sew shorts fit him perfectly and I would like to make more of those. I just have to take the waist in on those. (That would never be an alteration I'd make for myself...sigh...) Thanks for watching!😃

Viv, I recently bought myself a sewing machine. I learned to sew in middle school and I have loved it ever since but I have never had a sewing machine so I have either sewed by hand (mostly this, or borrowed one, rarely). I have also just copied a piece of clothing and made something that way. This is my first time since middle school (jr high) that I actually used a pattern. and for the most part it came out great...except the fit. I am overweight (plus size) and the shoulder and sleeves and around the chest fit perfect, but the torso (I made a tunic) was quite billowy. It was an independent pattern. Also, I made the tunic into pajamas for the winter so I didn't use an expensive fabric, which I'm glad of. But that is my biggest fear that if I make something with a fabric that I love and what if it doesn't fit. I also do not have a dress form to use. I think if I had one I would feel more confident. Do you find that the more popular patterns fit well, have you tried any independent patterns and do you have any advise? Thank you.

  • @vivmomsews4962

    @vivmomsews4962

    5 жыл бұрын

Hi Kristina, lovely to hear from you! Wow - sewing by hand is an art and it sounds like you are very skilled at it. Beautiful! But now you have a machine and I hope it’s going well. I felt overwhelmed by my new machine when I got it (January 2018), I wanted to run back to my simple mechanicals. However, I’ve come to feel very comfortable with it.👍 I rarely buy expensive fabric. I know it’s out there and I know it’s gorgeous, but my lifestyle and sewing style do not call for pricey fabrics. This helps me relax a great deal with fit issues, and I think when we are relaxed we just sew better. I don’t really sew independent pattern lines. I’ve made one (1) and it was a bit meh for me. But there are hundreds of independents and many super star indie patterns, so don’t let me sway you. For fit I always look at finished garment measurements, printed right on Simplicity and New Look envelopes. Other “Big 4” (Vogue, Butterick, McCall’s and Kwik Sew) make it a little more difficult as you must access the pattern tissue to see the finished measurements. For me, since I’m busty, I match the finished bust measurement in a top, dress or jacket. For pants, I match the finished hip measurement. (I then adjust the pants’ waist to make it bigger.) I don’t have to adjust too much on dresses because once it fits in the bust, it’s usually a good fit all around (though I’ve been told to do swayback adjustments.) I stopped looking at the size charts a long time ago. My advice to you would be to match your largest body area - usually bust, but not always - and go from there. This isn’t foolproof and may still require some adjustments, but it was a game changer for me. Other people swear by the high bust measurement (armpit to armpit) but when I tried that, it put me into a huge size. And keep the fabric a reasonable cost until you’re feeling confident. I have never used a dress form and I don’t make muslins, so it’s just gotta fly or sink. If it sinks, I fiddle with it. If it’s past fiddling, I donate it and move on. So many things to sew, so little time! Best to you in this endeavor and keep me posted!😄👍

Good for you to be learning. Basically cut a 1 1/2" wide piece of elastic at a comfy circumference plus 1 inch, then sew the ends together, making a circle. That joining seam will be the back. Quarter mark it and then pin to back seam, side seams and front - wrong side of pants. It won't fit, but you'll stretch it as you sew. Use a zig zag stitch and stitch near the top edge. It feels a little strange pulling the elastic as you go. Watch a few videos. This application gives a nice, non-bulky finish. You can then turn the elastic in once and stitch at seams to anchor it. I didn't even turn mine in. All the best!

Rayon...hmm...I don't find "growing" with my rayon challis clothes, but it could certainly happen with other types of rayon fabrics I would think. You are NOT going crazy. That rayon crepe maxi I made had a nightmare hemline / nothing remotely even. I kept serging parts off - front too long, back too long, finally I called it a day or it would have turned into a midi. So it's uneven. I didn't really shed any light on your question, sorry! Thanks for watching! Always a pleasure to hear from you!
