I remember back in the late 90s, channels like History Channel, A&E and PBS used to have some really good ancient rome (and medieval) documentaries back in the days. I think they officially stopped making good quality documentaries at the end of 2006. If you are a history or social studies teacher, these are a gem to show during class or just watch on your own.

Calling Caesar particullary cruel IS funny when they skipped over what gauls or Germanics did.

His achievements were pretty spectacular. You could make an argument that conquering the East wasn't terribly impressive because they'd already been scattered by Pompey, decades before, and you could say that his conquests in Britain and Gaul were less impressive than he made them out to be (quite likely, actually), due to Roman technological and organizational superiority relative to the forces he'd met, but the fact of the matter is he still successfully defeated one of the most accomplished and celebrated generals in Roman history, Pompey, and defeated several successive Roman armies afterward, as well. Pompey was in a better position and he was better supplied, and Caesar still won, further establishing the impressive nature of his victories. That's only to speak of his military successes, as well. His political successes were arguably as impressive.
