WTF are you talking about? It was LAMPLEY and LEONARD who FIRST made the screw up about him never having fought a southpaw......Just wanted to jump on the "Durr duhh I dont like Larry Merchant cuz reasons"?? Merchant was alright to me. He occasionally acted arrogant, which is a prerequisite of the job he held. I've heard Lampley, Leonard, Bernstein, Clancy, Albert, Pacheco, FOREMAN, Cosell, and MANY others make weird or stupid remarks. The job is virtually always "off the cuff" and sometimes they just spitball. I'd love to see the myriad dipshits of the internet fumble and stammer when you throw a Mic in their hands. Bunch of f*ckin shitbirds.

@@lemankurtz8950 I tend to agree. I can see how some found him off-putting, with this labored and self-indulgent delivery. And he wasn't the most-solid boxing guy. But I felt he lent a dignity to the proceedings. I thought he generated actual insight and that what he was trying to pull off is fifty times harder than what passes as color commentary today.

I remember watching this double header and Aguilar was your typical Panamanian boxer hood mover throwing combinations from different angles I’m not to sure if Chavez did have stomach pain issues and it was more the fact that Aguilar was a good boxer with good movement and him being a tall southpaw. Chavez got to him in thee end and the then the writing was on the wall. Chavez went on strength to strength after this fight what a great fighter he was dominant for many more years to come 🥊🇲🇽

Hagler habia noqueado a Thomas hearnd the cobra. Eh aqui mi error. Fue un show de boxeo. Amen.

The commentary on this is so wide of the mark. Round 2 from Leonard: "Chavez is frustrated (having dropped Aguilar the previous round!). He's loading up and needs to throw combinations (Chavez is throwing combinations and walking through Aguilar!). This has not been a good round for Chavez (is out-landing Aguilar quite heavily and has way more on his shots!)". No wonder the same broadcast team had Taylor pitching a near-shutout a couple of years later.

Whitaker's manager refused to sign a contract to fight Chavez if he was the winner against Ramirez (can't blame him tbh, was being strong-armed into it by the WBC at the weigh-in). Whitaker loses a bad decision, then Chavez unifies against Ramirez. Whitaker eventually won the IBF title, but by then Chavez had already signed to challenge Roger Mayweather up at 140. A year later Chavez unifies against Whitaker's stablemate, Taylor. The next spot is where it gets tricky, from the point of view of the Duvas. They immediately rule out a Chavez-Taylor rematch, except up at 147. 5 months after Chavez-Taylor, Whitaker unifies the Lightweight title with a first-round KO of Juan Nazario. The obvious move, since Chavez wants to stay at 140, is for Whitaker to then move up and challenge him, right? No, instead, it's 2 years before Whitaker moves up to 140 and wins the IBF belt. Chavez is still WBC champion, so an obvious big-money unification fight happens at 140, right? Again, no. Despite only just moving up to 140, Whitaker jumps straight up to 147 to challenge Buddy McGirt. Supposedly, the plan was that if Whitaker lost to McGirt he'd then unify against Chavez back down at 140. Does that make any sense at all? Chavez was the bigger money fight and clearly Whitaker had no problem making 140, so why move up to 147 for less money? If he lost to McGirt then he'd be getting less money for fighting Chavez, as he'd be coming in off a loss. makes no sense unless the real intention was to try to draw Chavez up to 147, which the Duvas had tried 2 years before with Taylor. I think Whitaker would have signed to fight Chavez at 135 or 140, no problem. But the Duvas definitely thought that Chavez may be less effective up at 147. in 1993 Chavez would fight Whitaker for the 147 title, whilst weighing in a full 5 pounds under the limit and be held to a highly disputed draw. He'd fail in another try for the 147 title years later against De La Hoya, which shows that the Duvas were correct in their evaluation of how he'd do at that weight. Smart move by Whitaker's promoters, but robbed boxing of a potentially great fight at 140, where Chavez was still highly effective.

@@MelvinMolden6898 Wrong you can even look it up he fought Ramirez the first time when he challenged for the title and lost a month prior to this fight he fought Ramirez March 12th 1988 and lost a decision when he could have fought this fight which was on the 16th April 1988 but turned it down for Ramirez who was defending a few weeks earlier. Even look it up it says that Ramirez defended the title which is true. You are wrong and are talking about their rematch a year and a half later where Whitaker had a title that was the 2nd Ramirez vs Whitaker fight which happened August 20 1989.
