When Rosie O'Donnell was talking about The Sound of Music and wanting Julie Andrews to be her mother, I can totally relate! I too lost my mother at a young age and one of the reasons I think I loved the movie so much growing up is that in a way, I sort of vicariously lived through the children in wanting for a loving mother figure. Julie played the role so well, and even though no mother is "perfect", in real life she has certainly come across as the picture of class, grace and kindness.

Mean, nasty, cruel...enjoyed making people squirm and why people liked her....noooo clue. Karma is a bitch Barbs! ❤️Julie is an awesome, lovely, so very kind with a spark of badass included and so cool lady!❤️ Her singing or not! What an actress! Isn’t that what a consolation prize is? She narrowly missed the assumed prize “role” in My Fair Lady, for all the accolades it had become. It’s in no disrespect to Julie, since all had assumed she would’ve gotten the role of Eliza. What poetic justice it was when Julie soared to heights with Mary Poppins, and even beat out Hepburn (who acted wonderfully... but still...) during the award season.

I think Barbara's behaviour in this interview is disgusting. Not only is she overtly probing Julie but she is being impolite while doing so. My sympathy is with Julie. Her responses reinforce what a lady she is, which is completely contrasting to Barbara's brashness. I understand the interviewer has to be probing, but Barbara takes it to a new level, she seems to revel in the idea of Julie's condition. Julie and Barbara are worlds apart. Julie is a legend, Barbara is not. She is a 'want to be'.

When I was a kid, Julie's wonderful voice filled my house (me providing karaoke) and she has been one of my biggest inspirations in life, she actually sparked my passion for theatre and music as a child and had a big influence on me growing up, Mary Poppins was the first movie I saw of hers and obviously fell in love and thought she was extremely charming, poised and full of grace, Barbara Walters calling Mary Poppins a "consultation prize" is a huge slap to the face not just to Julie herself but to everyone who fell in love with her as that character, so, yeah, shove off BW.

Not only am I a female, I remember my mother's father was the first male to Assigned me! I'm hoping to be believed! I am not 18yrs old, but I was born with Epilepsy! I kept seeing my grandparents on and on, and they all gave me the assignment to sing and remember Gospel songs ( I miss them 24/7/365, but I remind myself that several others were having physical issues too and how my 5 teachers told me to be myself, or do SOLOS). As years passed I was not able to manage my health, so I had Brain Surgery and met a different doctor who say I highly needed a VNS, which is like a Pacemaker but for the brain. gradually my mental issues got worse and was confused with the other sounds. The physical thing was one ear wasn't the same size as the other...another surgery! As yeas went by, not only did I lose my voice because of medical issue, but one of the teachers told me I was going higher and my range changed from medium-low to medium. As I continued I remind myself whatever helped me mentally, it is a good supply for physical strength too. Now I'm medium-high range, and always remembering what my grandparents taught...one who is drenched isn't afraid of the rain ( I'm also the niece of physicians/veterans who kept assigning me to stay myself) -SOPRANO

I think fate took the right twist for her to be cast in Mary Poppins, because which film now has more cultural longevity and relevance in American and English pop culture? Which film is more a part of your childhood? Who stands out in your mind more? Certainly Mary Poppins! No one else could have done it! She gave us three years of My Fair Lady and a cast album for the ages, isn't that enough?

  • @OlgaLevin

Both films are equally good. I agree that Mary Poppins is engraved deep into the memories of those of us who grew up watching the film. Now that I've seen it a few times being an adult I understand the story line and watching from a very different perspective. And I gotta tell you that just as fun all the songs are, that movie is very beautiful and makes you think about a lot. You mentioned that fate took the right twist for Julie on this one, I think it's the same for Audrey Hepburn. Audrey Hepburn is known for an array of movies like Funny Face, Roman Holiday and Breakfast At Tiffany's. But I think that My Fair Lady MADE Aurdrey stand out even more as a legendary actress. Just the type of costumes they had for that role, they needed a serious fashion icon for that role, and what no better person for that than Audrey Hepburn. She was absolutely gorgeous, very attractive and a fashion icon in her time. Julie Andrews who is also gorgeous, just fit very well for her roles as Mary Poppins and Maria Von Trap. She is known for her warm personality away from acting, and both of those roles really required a good degree of that. Plus she also mentioned that if she did My Fair Lady, she wouldn't be Mary Poppins which even she knows that's the movie that she is recognized for firstly.

I wonder if there’s a recording of her final performance of Victor/Victoria in 1997. Would be nice to have a piece of that history.

Have none of you ever seen Barbra Walters conduct an interview? She's always like this, to the point of having a reputation for being a tough interviewer. She may seem pushy but that's just how she is. I'm sure Julie knew exactly what to expect, considering so many other people have been interviewed by Barbra.

Wonderful interview. Julie is pure class. But why the hate on Barbara Walters? That's her job, to get celebrities to open up about their personal lives. I'm sure Julie knew what to expect, and if she hadn't wanted to discuss it, she wouldn't have done the interview.
