Julian the Apostate: The Last Attempt to End Christianity | 361AD-370AD

Julian the Apostate was the last pagan emperor of Rome, but that is only part of his legacy. In truth through a series of clever moves, Julian sought to both end Christianity in the empire by having Christianity do the dirty work for him. While simultaneously, seeking to bring back the Roman pagan religion, as triumphant as ever.
In our second segment, we explore a site you may never heard of: The Mogao Caves. Located in Gansu Province in modern northwest China, the Mogao Caves is one of the most impressive sites in Buddhism. In addition to housing some of the largest statues of Buddha currently in existence, it is the location of a chance findings of the Dunhuang manuscripts - a near perfect time capsule of everyday life along the famous Silk Road. It brokers little comparison elsewhere.

If you want a clue as to what was happening with Julian's state of mind just before he began his campaign against the Sassanian Empire, read his letters to his old Christian classmate St. Basil (who both studied together in Athens) before Julian became the Emperor. His first letter to Basil was very conciliatory. He invited Basil to the court of Constantinople to receive his friendship and to make his mind up on whether Basil would to stay in the Emperor's Court or not. I don't believe that Basil, who was a very harsh critic of Julian, ever responded to that first, seemingly kind, letter. Later in his rule, just before he left on his Sassanian campaign, Julian sent Basil another letter. this letter could be described as haughty and not friendly. In that letter, Julian was bragging about his intention to subdue the Sassanians and he demanded that Basil send him 1000 solidi of gold, ostensibly because Julian was aware of Basil's criticism. Basil did respond to this letter. In his response, Basil said that he was a poor man and did not have such riches to give to Julian. I get the impression, along with his sour reaction to the riots in Antioch, that Julian would have punished Basil and his Christian opponents had he been successful in his war. It's just speculation on my part, but I think Julian's tactics against Christians would have been a lot harsher had he not been killed in battle and had returned to continue his reign.

I'm honestly not surprised at all that Hebrew texts were found there. In the Asian gallery in the Royal Ontario Museum, there is a Torah scroll that was found in China.
