What makes this piece so great is how well it summarises everything thats going on. It seems to fill in for the absence of rain falling, conveying the emotions of how tragic and hopeless it all was. They could never save Riko. Even though she wore a smile the emotions still break through.

Tbh I think they did save Riko, in the end. She died believing she was saved. She died feeling the bliss of freedom. And, in the end, she died as Riko and not as a part of someone else. So even though she didn’t get to live her life the way they wanted her to- I think they still saved her. They defied fate with her in one way or another.
