    i've seen some old japanese judo pics in some dojos where everyone is shirtless/no gi. there's no doubt in my mind that they've explored no gi technique, and you'd be an ignorant fool to think that they've never done it, but i'm still surprised at how rare this is to this day... shouldn't be this way. keep doing what you're doing, this stuff is important for judo!

    I'm surprised that nobody has pushed for Judo in the way that BJJ has been pushed in the world. Here in the US we have 10th planet BJJ that branched off to be the no-gi equivalent of the Gracie schools. Surely no-gi Judo could be very popular as well, particularly for no-gi BJJ and MMA competitors.

    @Chuck Green Very true that no gi Judo could be seen as wrestling. However, speaking as an American there seems to be a very different approach to it than Judo. We tend to shoot for legs for example as our primary focus, and not so much emphasis put on many of the throws and sweeps in comparison. I guess my point was a more "Judo styled" wrestling

    Great video. No-gi judo is something very important I believe for MMA and it is going to be on the spot in the following year as more and more people are interested in it. I remember Caro Parisyan who used it effectively and Ronda Rousey used it effectively in MMA. Such a great art. Another effective element of judo is its fast-paced transitions from the stand-up phase, through throws to the ground fight phase, without exaggerating the use of guard, using powerful pins and quick and dynamic submissions, altogether make it unpredictable and quick for the cage. And it is important almost every throw can be executed from a relatively upright stance which lowers the risk to get a knee or being kicked in the head. And kuzushi, as ability and knowledge, is something unique, a real gem and it can benefit every fighter and can be applied in every martial art.

    Could you do a video on how to do the throw at 4:20? The one that looks like step around ura nage? I always try this move but sometimes either my back hits first or I just lift them in the air and get stuck (probably cause I know my back will hit the ground first). Also here it's done so smoothly, in one motion, but when I do it, it ends up being more like me stepping around then picking my opponent up.

    Good content man! I wanted to ask u at what rank do u feel someone would be able to use Judo effectively in a self defense situation? I am currently just beginning Judo coming from an amateur boxing background. No grappling experience. But have been told that Judo isn't the best grappling to choose being that it has a huge learning curve compared to other grappling arts.. What is ur view on that?

  • @nicolasyonezuka1058

    @nicolasyonezuka1058

    3 жыл бұрын

    As you know, in any martial art, there is no easy way. The more you train and the more confident you get, you clearly have the advantage in self defense. As far as which grappling art is best for self defense, Judo focuses on slamming your opponent to the ground as hard as possible to incapacitate and then if your opponent can survive that, you immediately go to the ground for a joint lock, pin or choke for a submission. So don't think in terms of rank or learning curve, just train in JUDO and be the best you that you can be.

  • @OrphanTube210

    @OrphanTube210

    3 жыл бұрын

    IMO the learning curve isn't steep for "street judo" self defense as long as you stay with non-sacrifice throws i.e. Ogoshi (major hip throw) you should be ok. If you go to the ground it's a different story. Most Judo schools these days focus on the sportive aspect and rule set which doesn't reward practitioners for ground work as much as standing. Don't get me wrong. You can develop good ground self-defense but it will take time just like BJJ. Sorry for the rambling. I hope I made sense.

    The takedowns needed for street are totally dependant on clinching without taking a head punch. It takes very little training to throw if you get that. The key is sparring against strikers,there is no judo without that.

    @nickyonezuka-cranfordjkc4931

    I wrestled but never took a shot or rode someone out. I would just use judo throws to take them down either to their back for a pin or get my points and let them back up to try to take down again, so I figured out what grips to use in order to translate which judo throws I could use. Also common sense. If you watch Eastern European freestyle wrestling, they use very similar grips and throws.

    Also, you can check out some videos of Greco Roman grips, they will work very well for no go judo. But at the end of the day it's mostly practice and feeling it out. The more no gi grappling you do from standup, the better you will get. My gym had freestyle judo, catch wrestling, and bjj, so everyone sort of learned a mash up. No gi judo is basically Greco-Roman wrestling, I'd argue that there's no need for no-gi judo in any wrestlers repertoire du the the fact that all the principles and movements already exist in wrestling, wrestlers that don't already compete/crosstrain in Greco would probably benefit from that. I'd say judo guys that only train in gis would likely benefit from taking the GI off once in while and wrestling(which is what no-gi judo is).

    @@nicolasyonezuka1058 Basically I agree with your opinion, but I also suggest you to consider judo prohibits grabbing under waist. Additionally, no wrestler will keep playing a game in the clinch position like in the videos. In my point of view, the approach in the videos is strongly based on “judo”, as they keep a distance between their legs far.

    This is why you say "im gonna wrestle" instead of "im gonna fight". It's the same thing in judo, but we can say " Im gonna do randori"

    This is exactly the same trip khabib nurmagoledov,islam makhachev and zabit magomedsharipov use on her wresling. This is the dagestan wresling that mma expert don't understand,people always talk about bjj but judo/wresling is the key to sucess because this is more technical than US wresling.

    i think the gi was just a pretentious idea from someone back in the day. you need to learn the takedowns and grappling without the advantage of holding on to collars and oversized garments.

    I use Judo throws in wrestling because 1. I'm too 'lazy' to change levels for single and doubles 2. Few people know how defend against them

    Nice! The Uchi Mata counter to the single leg attempt at 4:40 is interesting, except I'd say that's one of the worst attempts for a single leg I've ever seen. Terrible posture, which invites either a guillotine or sprawl; and terrible foot placement, thus no sideways drive to put all his weight on the opposite leg to allow the leg to be lifted. I'm curious if that counter could possibly work against half decent technique? TBH, I'm actually glad Judo banned leg attacks from competition rules, as it means we can train both Judo and Wrestling, and gain a pretty damn sweet array of take down techniques. PS - might be worth investing in a decent mic. The volume in this vid is woeful, I had to put in my earphones to hear it.

    Not quite. Greco doesn't have any attacks or on with the legs. There's a whole category of Judo throws called Ashi Waza (leg/foot) techniques. Many of them are in this video: Osoto Gari, Kosoto Gari, Ouchi Gari, Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi, and Uchi Mata. There's also a Harai Goshi, which is a koshi waza, (hip technique),but uses the leg as well. None of these throws are present in Greco-Roman wrestling. Seoi Nage and Ogoshi are both in the video though, and they're shared techniques. But you're right, Greco and Judo are both beautiful.
