Judi Dench: The Waterstones Interview

Ойын-сауық

Widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest actresses, Dame Judi Dench has conquered both stage and screen in a career spanning six decades. In Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays The Rent, her conversations with actor and director Brendan O’Hea provide illuminating insights into the works of the Bard as well as hugely entertaining stories from her life on stage. Will Rycroft sat down for his own conversation with them both to talk about first steps on the stage, the genius of Shakespeare, and why being part of a company in service of an audience is the most important thing.

I saw her in Mother Courage many many years ago and when she first walked onto the stage I had never seen an actor transform so much to being totally unrecognizable, and yet totally truthful. I was stunned at that performance and it never left me. The one thing that always sticks out for me with Dame Judi, is that whatever character she is playing, she always, always tells the truth and that always separates good actors from the great.

Brilliant interview. Brilliant interviewer, who knows how to lead and follow like a graceful dancer. (I’m sure his acting chops help.) I could listen to Dame Judi and Mr. O’Hea for hours. Her brief recitations brought tears to my eyes, and when she asked Will why he remembered his speech from Shakespeare and answered for him, “It’s your heartbeat,” I was finished. What a treasure this clip is. Can’t wait to read the book.Thank you.

Really interesting to listen to Judy reference the past, because she doesn't reminisce, but draws on memory of past experiences for insight. She is such a good sort. She seems devoid of airs and graces. Will, I really enjoy the way you interview, or rather sit down and have a good natter with various people. I enjoy your observations because you obviously know What you're talking about. May you live long and prosper🤟

"National Treasure" is a phrase bandied about sometimes. But in the case of Judi Dench it should be "World Treasure" and this podcast really shows why. I have always loved the way she "chews scenery" by underplaying which she goes into a bit. But what you take away from this extraordinary interview is what an amazing human being Dame Dench is. An exceptional interview about an extraordinary person. I can't wait to read the book@@WaterstonesTV
