Judge explains 24-year sentence in street racing crash that killed mom, toddler

The driver who hit and killed a mother and her baby on Bayshore Boulevard nearly three years ago will serve 24 years in prison. The judge said Cameron Herrin’s track record of excessive speeding contributed to his decision to give him 24 years.
After the sentencing hearing, the victims’ family says they got justice and they hope this moment will spark some change. They say it’s time for the city to stop street racing culture. They want to make sure no other family loses a loved one to a crash like that again.

I went to driving school when I was 16, and they invited in a man who's wife was killed by a drunk driver. It happened when he was in his early 20s and when he was speaking, he was in his 40s. Never remarried. Never got to start their family. He was all alone. That was 20 years ago and I can still hear the pain in his voice.

I've read of people who had a fly/bee/butterfly in their car while driving and they jump jerk the wheel and go head on with oncoming traffic. Always look ahead while driving too, always see your path forward, if you ever decide the jam the brakes cause you don't wanna run a red light....check your rearview before someone slams into the back of you...and never react to aggression or whatever, making it worse by engaging never wins.

It’s good to see a judge who takes his job seriously. You can tell he carefully and thoughtfully weighed the options, the crime, the damage and out serious effort into serving justice and being fair a balanced and took the time to explain his decision in a way that was respectful to the family of the deceased as well as the defendant. He took now joy in handing down the sentence, he didn’t need to stroke his ego and be unnecessarily heavy handed. Sad case, I would hate to have to make decisions like this.

He thought he was going to get away with it which is why he didn't take the plea deal. The extra 18 years was basically for wasting the court's time and it serves him right. It's not like he could dispute that he didn't kill those people due to gross negligence.

I had good driving fundamentals and knew how to corner and brake a vehicle at its limits. I also drove GoKarts on a regular basis so a lot of the driving skills transferred over from there. Not everyone has the same emotional compass. There are angry people, sad people, happy people, those with total empathy, and those who are only apathetic. Since everyone doesn’t “feel” the same, we’re not gonna act the same. For some the crime is a mother and child lost their lives, for others the crime is “a hot dude shouldn’t go to jail”. It seams harsh, but it’s just standard behavioral deviation.

You’re obviously not a good looking person and can’t relate to what us good looking people have become accustom to over the years. You’re just more angry with your poor looks and all the pain you’ve felt missing out on lots of dating, popularity, being passed over for jobs and promotions because they went to us more fortunate people. Let it go and feel good about your personality……if you can but you seem pretty negative so that likely won’t work either.

Death penalty is too easy, if you kill a murdered you won't solve anything, but keeping him alive, putting him at hard work, harsh conditions, miserable life, would be like he is in hell which is much better option. The body of a murderer is also a prison, if you kill him is like releasing him from a prison, that's why I don't agree with you, but I can see why you would want that, a life for a life, but I would like for him to get life in prison, or at least 30 years, since he destroyed 2 lifes and ruined the fathers life. A ruined life for a ruined life. ( I know this is what happened in medieval times, but it was more effective if you ask me)
