Jude Law reads a letter from a father to his newborn son

Ойын-сауық

The son of an Irish actor, Fergal Keane began his career in journalism straight out of school at age 18. Within 10 years he was a correspondent for the BBC, first in Northern Ireland and then in South Africa and Asia, winning numerous awards for his war dispatches as well as his books and other works. He read his Letter to Daniel on the BBC 4 radio program From Our Own Correspondent shortly after his son’s birth. Despite concerns his deeply personal missive was inappropriately emotional for the staid BBC, it was an immediate hit with the listening audience and earned Keane two additional awards. In later years Keane faced his own battles with alcohol and credits the love of his family for saving him from his father’s fate.
Jude Law read this incredible letter at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2019.

What a powerful way of taking full conscience of becoming a parent... what a better place the world would be if all children were loved and cherished like Daniel !!

Sounds trite to say it but after thirteen years of waiting and many disappointments during that time, that was exactly how I felt when I finally held my own baby son, 37 years ago - and still do!

The powerful, emotional words in this letter are truly done justice of their own by Jude's sensitive, strong, natural and perfectly judged reading. (I nearly wrote 'performance', but that would have been to denigrate both the letter and Jude).

I was thinking of my own father as I listened, and how much he loved me from the day I was born until his last breath. Thank you Dad, I wish I had had the courage and wisdom to come and see you, hold your hand, take you to our music, and hug you so very tight, forever. #FrankFreemanLee

Listening to this letter reminded me of my father and brought tears to my eyes. His was fiercely protective of his children without losing objectivity. The lessons he instilled in us are those for the ages, loyalty, honour, hard work and truth, things our leaders and politicians should aspire to but rarely achieve.

Words, written down as perfect these with the heartfelt emotional love. The protective nature for safety, empathy felt of horrendous sights witnessed of others perilous end. Yes, written brilliantly bringing you the memories of past & hope for the future. Each generation steps on this road to travel with their new babe in loving arms.

My dad used to write letters like these to my brother. Last year he held him in his arms for the last time, as my brother drew his last breath, dying of cancer, aged 30. I would like to translate this letter for him (our mother tongue is Spanish). Can the transcript be found anywhere?

Can we take a moment to marvel at the utter magnificence that is Jude Laws’ hair. He somehow has managed to make a receding hairline look perfect and paired with the messy, ‘just got out of bed’ look he can almost turn a straight man gay!
