Jude & Glenn's 2022 Bibbulmun Track Odyssey Episode 11 - Warren to Gardner

Episode 11 - Warren to Gardner
After a year of planning, in September 2022, we embarked on a north-to-south end-to-end on the 1000-plus kilometre Bibbulmun Track. It was a journey that presented its challenges, both physical and mental. This series showcases the beauty of the south-west of Western Australia and what it’s like to undertake a long distance through-hike through such spectacularly varied terrain.
In this episoide Jude & Glenn take in the beauty of the Warren campsite and overnight in the unique WA town of Northcliffe.

My grandparents came from the UK in 1924 and went to Northcliffe as part of the group settlement number 109. They first lived in a tent in the bush and later shared a tin hut with another family with only a curtain made from bags down the middle for privacy. They were allocated land to establish a dairy farm which they had to clear with only a cross cut saw and an axe. They were also given a horse and cart. They lived in a 4 room house with no toilet or bathroom. My aunty was born there in 1926 and my mum in 1928. My grandparents worked their butts off but by 1936 they walked off the farm taking only what could fit in the cart. They'd received for the milk cheque, but after the debt they owed the Agricultural Bank of WA, for the land was taken there just wasn't sufficient money to live. My grandfather went sleeper cutting to try and help with expenses but sadly it just didn't work. Such a tough time for all and as you say a very interesting part of WA history. My nanna loved cricket but refused to follow Australia her entire life because of the lies they were told by the WA Government before coming here.

Thank you for sharing. I am often amazed at the strength and resilience of those that had to clear their own land pretty much by hand back in those days. My mother’s father & uncles has to do the same thing around the Kulin area after WW1. It was a helluva tough life and I take my hat off to them all.

Wow. I love those stories. My folks too were pioneers at Munglinup. The hardships they faced, lack of any mod cons let alone a toilet. So many untold stories of those early WA years. Yet, they never complained. Oh, what a generation!

Really enjoying your videos Glenn, we passed each other on the track around Mt Dale someplace. I was Northbound having started my trek from Albany in late July, so it's great to see the track in similar condition albeit a bit drier haha.

Thanks Mike, glad you’re enjoying the videos. I must say I am glad Pingerup wasn’t as wet as when you passed through there.
