Judas Priest albums ranked (including Invincible Shield)

Which Judas Priest album is the best? Is it Screaming for Vengeance? British Steel? Or maybe the new Judas Priest album Invincible Shield? Judas Priest have never released two of the same-sounding albums in their career, and that's why it is not only extremely hard to rank all Judas Priest albums, but also it is rather unfair to do so in a conventional way, when one simply selects which album one likes best.
In this ranking... or better say mapping video I will discuss every Judas Priest album, including the 2024 record Invincible Shield and talk about its legacy in a short documentary going through the entire Judas Priest career and discussing every studio album released by Judas Priest.

@@j_freed I love Vengeance but far from my favourites (because so many are good) but Defenders is among my favourites even though it's one with the most songs I dislike. But The Sentinel... as a guitarist. The sound thise 6 strings make through an overdriven amp is why I play guitar. It feels like being Zeus dropping atom bombs instead of lightening bolts.

"Defenders of the Faith" was my introduction to Judas Priest too and an AWESOME introduction it was ! My first Judas Priest song that I heard and blew me away and made me a fan for life was either "Rock Hard Ride Free" or "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll" and I wanna say it was the former. But I bought both "Defenders of the Faith" and "Screaming For Vengeance" at the same time and was hooked by "Screaming" and it's been my favorite album ever since.

@@ELEKTROSKANSEN Agree 100% the intro and the solos, the way they trade being lead and rythm (live) culminating in both playing the final harmony in perfect sync at blazing speed. I mean that's what electric guitars are made for and tube amps that make weird noises when cranked. For me it's a Mr. Crowley solo type moment. As a godless guitarist hearing things like that (especially live) is the closest I'll ever come to a religious experience (barring strange fungi).

Just don't look at it as a JP album. It's a standalone thing. What if JP never became a metal band. It's just so different from Wings and the rest that it's jarring to some, especially those who mostly only listen to metal. I like everything, blues, metal, jazz and I enjoy it as music. It's just not really a Judas Priest album. First draft for the band. A prototype. Like the nuclear Ford car.

Because Demolition has a lot of innovative ideas on it, that have never been on any Priest album before, or after it... And though I have seen that many fans can't stand Demolition, I myself LOVE all but 5 songs on it. Metal Messiah, In Between, One On One, in my mind, Devil Digger are totally amazing, and very much push Demolition into the 'breaking the law' section in my mind. Thank you for doing this review! So many great albums that ranking would be agonizing. Love the categorization. The British Steel, Screaming, Defenders may be the best run in metal ! There is something about Painkiller though….kills from start to finish and doesn’t have a weak song on it! 🤘

Saw these guys two nights ago and was blown away about how great they were. First saw them in 1977 when they were an opening band for Led Zeppelin in Oakland, CA and it was that show that made me a fan.

Definitely do something similar for Maiden! British Steel was my introduction to Priest (I wish that I still had that vinyl), and then Point of Entry. My 10 year old self had no idea about the older albums…I just thought that is what Priest sounds like, not that they played it safe. A couple years later some guy in art class lent me Unleashed in the East. Mind blown. Thanks for doing these amazing videos

Great ranking of JP's discography! It's a little weird, but I like it, because the same thing happens to me with some albums that just had to happen for the good of the band today and it's a great exercise to prepare for the next album Invincible Shield. Also, it would be great to incorporate solo albums from members like Halford, Fight, and KK Priest.

Great video, and nice idea to sort the Albums into Categories, so you don't have to rank them ;-)) Anyway, I very much enjoyed the Video, and I am very excited and can't wait for Invincible Shield to arrive in a week or so. For me, my favorite remains Painkiller, released when I was 16, and I played it to Death... Stay safe and healthy!

As one ages, Run of the Mill hits ya hard. Rob's inflection on the word "gutter" is classic Rob. And those ending high notes, wow!!! Ibdo have to add, The Future of Mankind is an under-rated song in my opinion. It just wraps that complation album to a tee! Thanks for your rating and including the two albums with Ripper. Good way to describe their importance.

Your criteria are very good and the categorization is very creative. I arrived at the video irritated because Redeemer Of Souls is a FANTASTIC album and everyone just complains and despises it for having bad production blablabla, but your way of putting things is perfect and I don't disagree with anything on the list. Congratulations. And make the IRON MAIDEN tier list!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn't able to follow anything a girl just broke my heart but your voice talking about JP albums is comforting. I agree with everything I was able to absorb, Sad Wings of Destiny is my favourite source of live songs. Victim of Changes at my first JP concert. A very fond memory. Slava my friend. Be safe. My thoughts are with your people.

Cool ranking! I'm a blind guy over here, and I can totally visualize the way the mighty Metal Pilgram layed it all out there. And I love the point about how the debut album was necessary in the way Priest would end up evolving, rather than a nnice polished sound that we'd have to live with.

I think the problem with Nostradamus is that it's essentially a story and it sounds right only if you listen through the whole record. At least thats how I like it, and I love this album, it's musical, dramatic, complete.

Every reasonable rock and metal fan has to appreciate all the efforts Priest guys put into this album. Its a opus magnum with pros and cons but a huge step forward. AC/DC would have not been able to produce album like that inho

Funny, I'm doing that this week! In anticipation of the new album and because I noticed I hadn't listened to it in 10 years. It's not as bad as I remember, but I also loved it when it came out but grew to be very disappointed. There's some good stuff on there, but also a lot of filler that isn't really worth going back to on a whim. A trimmed down cut would've sat better with a lot of people.

Everything is subjective. For me Nostradamus is just brilliant! But I also like a lot of progressive and theme album bands. I absolutely love his clean singing on this album, but the screams he does, especially in the title track are just phenomenal.

I would love for them to play Nostradamus (the song) live. Say what you want about that album but that song is heavy as anything on Painkiller. Panic Attack is amazing. It pumps me up every time i hear it. The rest of the songs I've heard off 'Shield' haven't really done that. I still think Jugulator is under rated. Some HEAVY songs on that one. Bullet Train and Death Row in particular.

Amazing video man! is awsome that you did it i a diferent way, I think the best categories are "Riding on the wind" and "how tf can you do that" I feel something similar with painkiller than you feel with defenders of the faith, and I love jugulator and angel of retribution despite been considered controversial. I am want to get married, hope the maiden come soon!!

Cannot agree more that "Turbo" is underrated and "Reckless" is GREAT ! "Private Property" and "Wild Nights, Hot & Crazy Days" are criminally underrated gems ! "Screaming For Vengeance" does beat out "Defenders of the Faith" to me... but there's barely any daylight between them, I love them both so much. I don't know why they didn't stick with Judas Rising".
