Our ju no kata attempt at the 2023 national championships. We placed 4th out of 5 people and missed out on the bronze by a few points. Any advice/tips/comments are welcome.

Good demonstration; keep up the good work. When I was learning Judo, the forms were integral into the belt promotions. To me it leads to a more polished Judoka. Currently there are many who just think of Judo as a combat sport not as a martial art, because in many associations you can progress to black belt by only competing & learning techniques. Thus, the result is that many only practices to win competitions "shiai" and to get belt promotions not just to learn the art itself.

The purpose of Ju-no-kata is to introduce the concept of Ju "supple/gentle" in a formalized pattern. Traditionally there are two kata with no nage-waza "throwing techniques and both were taught to beginners. The first is Seiryoku Zen’yo Kokumin Taiiku: (maximum-efficiency physical education) it is a form of group calisthenics combined with some rudimentary striking defense. The second is Ju no Kata: "forms of gentleness."
