Adam Lambert actually produced a lot of his upcoming album "Trespassing" - so it can be done that the artist has a lot of say in the final product.

@EugenekSung Depends of what you mean by "artists." Most of the people I listen to write, play and produce (or atleast contributes to it beyond what Derulo does) all their music themselves.

@gijoo76 exactly, well, for most pop music and r&b anyway, the artists on the track is simply like a another instrument; controlled and written by other composers who "control" the artists performance

When chart singers say they "wrote the song", I notice that means they just wrote some of the lyrics. The music is so much more important though! The composers and producers really should get 90% of the credit

You mean 50% Music(Beat) and 50% Lyrics(Words)? That's pretty industry standard a 50/50 Songwriting split between two Co-Writers. Beat Makers are technically Songwriters. J.R Rotem wears two hats as the Producer/Songwriter.

I can't believe no one knew this; The artists that take credit for songs (i.e. Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Adam Lambert, etc.) don't write their own songs. At all. The producer (with other staff) makes EVERYTHING (from the beat to the vocal melody). So these artists that people praise have little to do with the actual song-making; the producer just chooses which voice would "suit" the song.

well thats a music b. it is about producers, style , right video clip and catchy tune, thats what people trying to get , some of them write songs in 100 procent ,some of them in 10 minutes , it is market and business some singers don't write anything but maybe sing great or look good and thats all matter ,sometimes , but how to get that deal?

think about it. It is the year 2012. How boring would this world be if music was the same as it was since soul, funk and blues era? If there was no new school then we wouldnt have anything to compare it with to say which of the two was the best. Its like not knowing what is right from wrong unless we made that mistake to find out for ourselves.

the producer literally makes everything. Celine Dion had that monster Titanic song but she made very little money off of it because she just sang. Usually the singer makes about 20% and the producer around 60%

@gijoo76 While there certainly are a lot of cases like what you describe, nobody should think it's the standard. I'm on the inside, part of a Grammy Award winning production team based on the east and west. I'm an assistant to the producers and (sometimes also) the mixers. For most of our clients, actually, we actually get them (the artist) totally involved in lyrical input and melodic 'vibe' if nothing else. Hey, not everyone's a great top-line writer! But, this way they also score points.

Without hearing my material, your statement bears only malice. And my material isn't on here yet. But I'd like to point out, that producers who make POP are people who obviously envy other POP stars good fortune. Music gives a priceless opportunity for expression & diversity; an artist's playground! ;)b But if you're limited by greed, trend, popularity etc. you are no better than a machine & don't deserve the title of 'artist'. If you think I'm wrong, let me know how or why.

mainstream music sucks today,no one puts any kind of emotions and they do not write their own songs just like you said, but j.r. rotem is not that good of a producer i would say that kanye west is even better and he is nothing special anyway the producers are one that deserve credit and not this so called ''artists''
