I woke from a dream last night. I had just been introduced to JR Hartley, he was old and frail, I embraced him and said, "It's like you are my grandfather coming back to me", and wept. Rather bemusing to me.
I love this advert, very touching storyline and fine acting, you can’t help but love the character and from the days of my youth, top marks.
God this brings back my childhood.. and this advert was well known ., rip JR Hartley.
The legendary David Abbott was the creative genius behind this campaign - back in the days when many TV ads used warmth and humour to engage with viewers on an emotional level. These days most ads seem to be charmless, cynical exercises in attracting people to gambling websites and other complete wastes of time. R.I.P JR Hartley and David Abbott. You are both greatly missed.

I've always been curious about where this advert was filmed. That street seemingly full of bookshops for example makes me wonder if it really did look like that, or if it was just dressed up for filming. It almost feels like being in another world now.

Haha and how many times did you see it! Probably hundreds! I have a fridge magnet with a design of the book. Love that advert. 😊
Voted 5th best advertisement by the good old British people!! Old fella died in 2001 aged 95, very sad being that he'd never caught a wild brown trout on the fly in his life! Surely no1 advert must have been a Hamlet one? Rest well Norman.
Quitessentially English at its core, J R Hartley. I kept copies of the Yellow Pages as a momento I don’t suppose they are still in the attic, which I don’t have anymore. Like the tsunami of Internet advertising, my copies have gone with the wind but I remember Mr Hartley and his heart warming enquiries, presumably for a copy of his own book, Fly Fishing by J R Hartley. You may glean nuance of language and a dying mannerism, which is unique to the English - now a dying breed swallowed by the vulgar and the impatient.
Genius advert and I have never forgotten this touching ad from my childhood!

This is one of the best British tv ad, very touching with thoughtful story line
When i watched this as a 12 year old in 1983 i was thinking how old the daughter looked, now all these years later watching this again i'm thinking crikey, she's gorgeous.
I grew up on Hartley St so whenever we had to give out our address the answer was always "Oh! Spelled like the book?". Yep.
Wonderful bit of acting from the old geezer, he really makes my heart go out to him.

JR Hartley, not just a spin bowler but a great at fly fishing too! Absolute legend!
My sons school teachers used to have a giggle to themselves when they seen jr Hartley on the school register!!
A wholesome time that I miss beyond words.
Lovely advert. Very well acted (especially by the old boy) and lovingly put together. Adverts today seem more about the noise than substance, so You Tube is needed more than ever.
Nostalgia overload!!! Nothing beats a trip back in time on KZread! Always puts a smile on my face forgotten vids like this! Bliss!!

This is arguably the most iconic ad ever if not the most iconic of the 80's. I'm surprised it has so few views.
Who can forget this advert.
After this, Fly Fishing by J. R. Hhhhartley was the punchline to countless gags
😪This is quite simply the best advert ever made. IMO.
Have you got "fly fishing" by JR Hartley? You haven't? Oh bother! Well have you got " the joy of sex" instead?
Fond memories of this advert - from better days when adverts like this were well written and quality acting.
Just been talking about this advert ..Good old KZread. Thanks for putting this on ..
Bygone era. I'm so glad I got to experience this way of life during my childhood. Not a smart phone or internet browser in sight. Yesteryear.
Very possibly the greatest advert ever made.
You have to give credit to the librarian and bookshop workers in this advert. They all knew in an instant that the book wasn't on the premises.
For some reason I became very emotional seeing this advert again after so many years.
What a magic advert!

When this advert came out the daughters of the UK were writing into yellow pages and ITV to get this shown again and again. The yellow pages has been replaced by google but the problem here is that the yellow pages didn't give a good service.
I always wondered who J.R Hartley was!
This ad is my childhood lol
Norman Lumsden and a fine performance too
I remember that the actor was in high demand after this advert and did another one where he was dressed up like a b boy, backward baseball cap and all.. cant remember what it was advertising though. Yellow pages did some cracking adverts. Yellow pages (French Polishers), Pg Tips and the Air Canada Adverts are the ones i remember the most kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKqqj9Szd6eqdsY.html

Did you ever see the J.R Hartley sequel? In true Hollywood fashion the sequel was bigger budget, higher production values, custom sets, main characters return, albeit older and more personally developed with emotional and intellectual links to the characters past (plus tea as a plot device to engage the return of a central character) there is the same need for suspension of disbelief when super powers are in evidence (to wit he opens the great book on exactly the correct page again) but it is an acceptable suspension in the overall story as he must hurry to the final act where in this sequel (spoiler alert) we actually meet the titular character whose equivalent was mythical and mute in the first instalment. There is a slight plot twist in the dying seconds and you may think it is a Kaiser Soze esque reveal but I think it concluded with reverence to the first instalment and as such the true origins of the character. In short if I ever wrote a book I would be sure to keep it safe because there is no yellow pages to save us now!!! 😂 kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z2F2rLeGgMjafpc.html

Yes, a comprehensive guide to dead end roads and quiet industrial areas with no cctv.
Tears
Why was he looking for his own book? He wrote it so he should know the ending. And why didn't he keep a first edition for himself!?
Fly-Fishing was actually Hartley's obscure, analogous title for his tract on the extermination of "inferior races".
Old Copies of yellow pages, were always in red phone boxes in industrial amounts, you then couldn't make a call as phone had been vandalised😐.
All for jr Hartley..?!
He's sitting in a book-lined library, but has no copy of his own book?
Oh you do have a copy of the report? Oh that's wonderful. My name is Sue Grey.
Then Amazon came along so much time saved!!
Acted by the great Norman Lumsden
They should redo this woth someone trying to find a copy of the yellow pages. And having the same difficulty.
