JR East Pass Changes and One Long Earthquake

Exciting changes are coming to the Japan Rail east passes starting on April 1, 2021. Two of their most popular passes, the Tohoku area pass and the Nagano Niigata area pass will be available for foreign residents in Japan to purchase. They will be valid for 5 consecutive days and the pass will NO longer be a flexible pass like before. #JREast #Tohoku #Japanearthquake
There was also a 7.3 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Fukushima in mid-February. Its magnitude was 4 in Tokyo, and it was the longest one I've experienced living in Japan.

Would you use these JR East Passes as traveler or foreign resident in Japan? And what's it like experiencing an earthquake in Japan?

Great news about the pass! Hopefully we'll get more videos from this new change :) I've experienced earthquake in Taiwan. It was also about 7.3 Richter in the epicenter but I'm not sure what the scale was where I was located. I was living in a 7th floor building at the time and felt like the building was actually "swaying". Glad that you are safe.

I'm definitely gonna be using both JR East passes, as the mini-Shinkansen to places like Kakunodate make it super easy to access directly from Tokyo.

Wow! That is indeed a great news. I have been thinking to travel Tohoku as well as Nagano/Nigata. I'm definitely going to use these passes :) Thanks! And yes, that earthquake was pretty long and scary!

Very informative video, nice to learn about ways to save on travel and how the pass works. I heard about the earthquake but I didn’t know you could feel it all the way in Tokyo, glad to hear that you are safe!

It’s too bad foreign tourists aren’t allowed into Japan yet, would have loved to ride on the Shinkansen again!

I agree, travel is not too pricy within Japan if you plan ahead. Definitely been places like UK where travel within country can be quite expensive by rail (unless you are willing to fly).

Do you need to insert the JRE Pass to the train turnstile or just show it to the gate staff (like with JR Nationwide Pass) to enter the platform?
