Its almost certainly impractical.........but just *imagine* if that exhaust manifold was a full blown extractor design feeding the turbo.........as the RAF said in WW2 "boost the boost and save the juice, and you will get home to roost!". I just realized that "Joyride" has an old skool Eaton gear knob/splitter. Very kool! I remember my dads W900 (1974) had a 13 "under drive" for pulling road trains in Australia......and the silver Eaton gear knob had a tiger/globe emblem.

I know the joy of finally getting Jake parts! Looked for 3 years for the parts for my 453, and when I finally got them installed it was worth every penny!

The Jakes on my 8V-92 arent the strongest thing in the world but they get the job done. I plan on running the rack, adjusting the valves and adjusting the Jakes this spring to see if it helps!!!

Like #1. Back in the early 2000's I got a pdf from a Jacobs Tech guy [Chris Harding] who give me a dyno sheet for their setup on an 8v92. I wanted to set the Jakes up on an old Freightliner with a 475. If I remember right, the retarding power was 285hp.

I'd say just judging with the butt dyno driving it that sounds close to what these make for brake hp. The holding power isn't all that great. But of course we are spoiled now days from cam lobe jake technologies!

@@MatzkeDiesel Chris said to me to think about getting their "Jacobs electric retarder" [at the time when they made them back in the day] and the combination of the Jake and Electric [frictionless] retarder would have pushed over 350hp. If you ever see an old Wanderlodge with an 892, high probability it has a JER. Nowadays a company called "telma" makes the same electric retarder that Jacobs used to make.

@@MatzkeDiesel yes they do, looking for a set of jakes for the 453-t if you ever run across a set also have you tuned much on the 8v-92? Just curious what the tuning ability are on them what was the last production year for the ddec ones? Iam sure the military used them up into the late 90s just curious

Ddec went until about 97-98 in the military stuff. With the ddec 4 ecm this 8v92 is as tunable as a comparable 60 series from the electronics side of things. I'm sure you are aware but a group of guys (friends) are repopping the 53 jake in an aluminum body that will be cheaper then originals. Thanks for watching

My 8V 92 DDEC l jakes don't brake much but help under some downhill situations. Put overhaul kits in them a few years back (pricy) and no change. I always blamed the lack of participation based on the lower compression ratio of the turbo'd engine. I have a 6-71, with Jakes, that's like stabbing the brakes when they turn on. Love your truck

That's an interesting thought. The difference is what, 19:1 vs 17:1? Never played with compression ratios on diesels, but playing with turbos and gasoline, you could bump the static compression ratio up, and just not run as much boost. You give up "some" peak HP, but you could often gain HP and torque at less than max RPM and max boost. For a pure race application, lower static and high boost made more peak HP, and usually the lowest ET. But slightly more static and slightly less boost made a much better and more drivable combination for anything that wasn't 100% race. I wonder how a 19:1 compression ratio with two smaller turbochargers, and less maximum boost would run?

So, to clarify, on the Grand Nationals, I bumped the static from 7.8:1 to a true 9.2:1. We took about 4 pounds of boost out, from 24# down to 20#. It made the street/strip cars super responsive, boost built better, torque was higher at lower RPM and stayed higher until the RPM and extra boost came into play.

ALWAYS change the fuel lines so that they don't crack where the flare is and dilute the oil with fuel. Use once.

Very nice! How hard are the DDEC IV 8V-92:engines to find? Sure, they're not as efficient as a Series 60, but, still, I think a DDEC IV in an older truck with a 10 or 13 speed can probably still earn a decent living, and you could probably put it together as cheaper than you could buy a newer truck with with a relatively fresh Series 60.

They are out there but not real common anymore. Most of the ones out there are surplus or engine jockeys have them and want big money. I kept my eyes open and got this on for decent money but it was only a ddec 2. I already had the conversion kit to make it into a 4. Getting a base file was difficult and I got some help from a friend down under on that.

@@MatzkeDiesel I see a bunch of military surplus at $4,000 or so. They look to be mechanical though. Not sure I'd want to attempt the conversion. Probably cost prohibitive.
