Had quite a few DDEC IV 8v92's go through the shop a few years ago that were in big Oshkosh snow blowers, I saved the flash file for those as they were the highest hp 92 file I've seen from the factory. I believe that the 92 series was the first commercially produced fully electronic diesel engine brought to market so I'm not sure how anyone things they didn't exist! Also don't know why anyone would say an old truck can only be a toy! Still have a 78 and 79 A model, 77 359M and an 85 FLC that work for a living. Joyride is cool truck and there is nothing better than seeing a nice old truck still out making money.

@mackenziesibley7025 Nope. N14 was not only not the first it wasn't even Cummins first electronic engine. 8v92 was the first fully electronic by several years. Cummins first electronic engine was a Big Cam with a modified PT pump. That was followed a couple years later by the Celect N14 and M11.

I absolutely love seeing old iron still working even now. And that is a beautiful truck, sounds so, so good.

Every city bus in the country had DDEC 92’s in the early 90’s as well as all military hmets & fire trucks i still have some ddec 1 & 2 8v92’s and tons of spare parts for em

They were real popular here in Australia way back for road train applications, last of these Silver 92 DDEC IV, the Marine engines were painted white, when I last rebuilt my 871 I painted it white also and every one laughed at me because of their reputation for oil leaks, you know the only evidence of oil was from the governor shaft seal, built with plenty of permatex no3 and 2pack paint only mod I did was my own custom double lip front crank seal, was always clean, loved the 2 stroke detroit (and MTU s)

That brake pedal has a better personality than most people. Love the rig.

Nice truck. Like the color and the motor. You've done a real clean job. Lots of DDEC 92 series motors built. Yes, they were the first electronic diesel. No hunting on a cold start because the buffer adjustment is off in the governor. I have a Silver Eagle Bus conversion with a DDEC I that I use routinely. 340K miles and counting. Also have the ProLink readers for the DDEC engines. Handy. I believe that the cruise control looks at the transmission sensor for cruise. I know that the bus has a tone ring on the front wheel for the speedometer. I just replaced the hall effect sensor for it. The bus also has a pulse generator on an auxiliary drive, at the back of the blower, for the tachometer. No DDEC interface for those two. I had an old 91 Pierce Firetruck that had a DDEC 6v92TA!! Was a hell of a motor!

Awesome. I used to work for Atlas Copco Wagner Mining Equipment Co in Portland, Oregon manufacturing plant as a diesel mechanic and I installed a lot of those 8V-92 T engines in our MT-444 underground mining dump trucks and 8 yard LHD loaders in the 90’s. They where neat in that they sounded great and would fire right up and not surge at idle when cold.

What a great truck. When I was in college, Detroit donated an engine just like this on an engine stand. along with a few brand new for the time Series 60 engines on their own stands. I think it ran off of DDEC I, but I am not certain. I was an automotive tech major enrolled in a couple of diesel tech classes & it was almost 30 years ago, so memory is a bit foggy on it. It is really awesome to see one still in a truck that is still used. I really love the Screaming Gimmies & have worked on a few used for gen sets & construction equipment. Can't wait to see more vids

I’m pretty sure the DDEC 8V92 was the first American engine to be electronically controlled. Then came GM’s Series 60 which was revolutionary because it was electronically controlled as well. I owned a cabover Kenworth with a mechanical 8V92TA @ 475 HP, but with straight pipes they are too noisy, you need at least some muffling. The Silver 8V92s were a lot better than the original Green 8V92s because of improvements in the block, the coolant gallery was too close to the oil gallery and cracked, causing coolant in the oil.

The ddec was the first electric diesel. Still work on them now in 2022. Have a fire truck in shop 8v 92 500hp perce ladder

Appreciate your video, I drove a ddec in the mid or late 80's it was in a freightliner brand new, it was rated at 400 horse with a 9 speed I didn't like the 500 ram splits of the 9 speed and that engine it was a powerhouse, not sure what ddec it was but it came with a hard plastic card from Detroit with numbers from 1 to about 30 or so, we were shown by the dealer how to use it, you would turn the key on maybe start it I can't remember but there was a button on the dash you would press it once then count the light above that button on how many times it flashed, then you would do it one more time, say the first time it flashed twice, then the second time it flashed 6 times, so you had a 2 and a 6, together 26 so now you look at that card and go to 26 and it might say injector response time slow on number 4 injector then you know you need to go to the shop, they would plug into a unit in the left jockey box to verify, I had that happen one time, memories

Nice ole Peterbilt , I like the ole 2 stroke Detroit as well that was the engine in my first truck and I've been in LOVE with them ever since keep us posted on the cruise control issue etc.

Great video, love the tractor.:) I've done something similar but with a 2009 Ford F350 and Detroit Silver 4-53T. Mated the old Detroit to an electronic cab and transmission. Everything works like factory and is daily driven, only thing to get working it the cruise control.

Very nice truck. Blue Bird Wanderlodge used the DDec for a good while in the 90’s I think up until 97 in the Pt models. The Lxi model got the 60 series. But you can’t beat the sound of the 8v92.

Super amazing how clean that '92 runs..........credit to its owner and setup. I worked for a guy here in Australia who is a Peterbilt fanatic..........even had an aluminum rail 377, very light tare weight truck, he left a section of rail as polished aluminum just to troll people. 2 strokes could well make a come back in the opposed piston "Achates" heavy and light truck engines in development.

Got a 25 year old DDECIII 8V in a Trielectron air start, top rating in the software is 840hp, has around 400hrs on it

For the cruise you can use the late model pin on the transmission side. I use the original 2 pin plug until I got the new one from Detroit.

Bus Grease Monkey works on them he's got a KZread channel and is in Tennessee. Dad had bought a new one in a 79 FLD It was in the shop 48 times in 2 years. Silver 92 they called it. Dad explained it like this. If you got a good one they were great. If you got a bad one. It'll break the bank. Series 60 I love. A silver nah. Old trucks are still useful they just can't go to California

I am currently running a 91 pete 377 with a 3406b pec cat in it which is an all mechanical engine with a computerized fuel pump timing advance and governor and a 9 spd behind it and 4.10 gears. this setup also has electronic cruise with 2 speed sensors on tailshaft of trans might be something you could use for your cruise setup

That thing sounds AWESOME WOW!!!!!!!!!

Depending upon your output housing, there's usually two ports for sensors if it has the 16 tooth tone wheel. If it is cable operated it won't work. I'm not sure about Detroit, but on a Caterpillar, you can turn off the road speed sensor and set high idle to 2100 and use that for cruise control.

I have a dream of custom building a 12v 92 even though they're rare and used 2 ddec IVs side-by-side to power the thing. Not sure how possible it is but it sure would be fun to then put it in a 80s something aluminum FLC.

We had 5or 6 city busses that came out ofJacsonville Fla that had the cmputer 8V92t, never got one of them to start

Got me a 540 hp rated 8v92 in a Oshkosh chassis, when I find the parts to put a manual transmission to it, installing it in my 1975 LTS 8000 tractor!!

I have two 500 hp 8v92 still in crates.. ddec motors.. they r x military stock stuff.. possibly gonna put on ein one my buses and one in either 359 I'm build or my Needle nose pete.. haven't decided yet

your cruise should be able to be used with a dual lead(4 wire) electronic pick up sensor on the transmission output yoke. I know some were set up to pull the speed signal from the speedo head wiring while others relied on the transmission pick up. that was pretty much determined by the truck oem. even if your running a mechanical speedo you could still run a tone wheel and pick up on the outside of the yoke housing like some do now.

I wonder how well the Detroit V8 would run, and how efficient it might be, with two smaller modern variable vane turbochargers, mounted on the manifolds, to preserve the heat, and an air to air intercooler. Of course, an air to air intercooler might make it harder to cool a Detroit, and a Detroit absolutely doesn't like to get too hot. I'm just thinking that a truly modern turbocharger system (you'd need the marine blower bypass setup) would make more boost, quicker, and more torque down at lower RPM, and just generally make more power, more efficiently. Without hurting the engine. It might be better to spin the blower faster as well. I've also wondered if using the "normally aspirated" 19:1 compression ratio might make it more efficient. While you would have to limit maximum boost from the turbocharger to a lower pressure with the higher compression ratio, the engine might be more efficient. I know it would make more torque with less boost, and it would build boost quicker. The question is, where is the "balance point". If you're not trying to make maximum HP and using maximum boost to do it (an 8V92 can make 750HP at 1950RPM) can you make more torque, more efficiently, in the lower (1200RPM to 1450RPM) RPM range, with more compression, more blower speed, and a cooler charge?

That's exactly what it is! I've often said it is hard to set a truck up well for multiple applications. With a mechanical neck detach trailer we wanted the 5th wheel as low as possible to run the rollers up on. However that put the hopper bottom into the truck fenders. We had no choice but to go up with it. The Delrin runners are bolted to the top of manufactured ramps to ease that transition. So far it works great. It saves the paint on the truck frame and ramps, grease comes off easily. It doesn't slam as hard. Only catch was that it is slick enough that the support block for the neck will kick out when pulling away from the detach. I drilled some holes in the Delrin and can pin the block in place. Works well. Just 1 extras step. Thanks for watching!

There's now a common rail 8V92 twin turbo powered race truck. It has dual ECM's. There's a ton of potential there. It can make way more power than DDEC can, more efficiently.

Absolutely it can. We have been in contact with the owner over the past year as he was developing it. He was kind enough to offer us a ride at the uphill drags both last year and this year. Although far from dialed in the truck had already picked up a gear and you could feel the difference in how it launched. To us the number one benefit is having all the fuel pressure you could need at any time. Not having to create it at each injection. Plus you can only get 250cc of fuel or so out of a mechanical 92 series injector. That's if you can find the 30 tear old parts to do it. We won't share his numbers but the fuel potential of the common rail setup is far greater as well.

That's an excellent question. I say that because I see a lot of the military 8V-92TA engines go for 1/4 the price of a decent Series 60. If those are or can be DDEC IV, and can get decent fuel economy when tweaked to 550 or so,...... I'd consider one in an older Pete with a 13 speed. For the money......

I would like to know where you sourced the conversion kit to swap to a DDEC IV ECM and all the needed wiring to convert a old school truck to electronic 8v92.

The kit Caleb was referring to was a military kit to convert the DDEC II 8V-92's in ther HEMTT's to DDEC IV so they would still be supported by Detroit. It came with the appropriate wiring, cam pulley, trigger wheel, ECM, ecm cooler and mounting plate, and a bunch of other odds and ends. It is by no means a kit to convert a mechanical engine to a DDEC engine. I am in the process of converting a mechanical 6V-92 to DDEC IV controls, and while not rocket science, there is quite a bit to change over to make the swap. Injectors, front engine plate, cam pulley, front blower cover to eliminate the original governor, fuel jumper lines, SRS/TRS sensor and appropriate mounting bits, and a bunch of little odds, ends and tools to get the swap done right. All in all, I wish I would of started with a DDEC engine at first, but it all worked in the end!!!

Yes. They run 2 ecms. A “master” and a “slave” ecm. They have to run 2 because the DDEC ecms only have a maximum of 8 injector drivers. I’m not sure what all applications they were used in, I’ve only seen them in a generator application.

I have two 79' GMC GENERALS one with 6v-92 101,000 original miles and one with 8v-92 with 168,000 original miles we use them on our farm and I've had to school a couple of local Peterbilt guys on what that old 8v-92 will do they get real quiet when they can't keep up with those newer trucks and I'm pulling away blowing coal and makin music

The sensors and the internal components of the ecm. From a tuning standpoint the IV is a lot more refined and operates better.

We feel it's pretty close. It pulls to about 1550. At 60 it's running about 1600 so it's a good usable range. Slower at 55 or so I usually split it. We haven't topped it out but it will hink along @ 75 easily. I plan to get the charger setup a little more efficient and then see if there is anything left in the tune.

@@MatzkeDiesel Thanks for the reply. I just like the older stuff. I wasn't sure how much you could do with modern technology, and the electronics. I've seen decent deals on older trucks, most seem to "repower" with a Series 60. Which is a good engine, had one in a T700 with a ten speed. I just like the simplicity of the old two stroke, and don't mind the electronics.

Detroit's sound like an airplane engine.

Didn't think they were rare. Wanderlodge has them from 88-94, ddec 1, 2, and 3.

I was just amazed at the number of people put there that didn't know or wouldn't accept that they exist. I don't think they're really rare either except mabye the 4's in an automotive application because of 98 emissions.

What's your thoughts on this DEF shortage? I've got a feeling it's going to send shockwaves through our Country.

Well oof. Many of these shortages in my opinion are contrived to drive up pricing. I think that is the case with def. The base ingredients are not hard to acquire and it is not hard to manufacture. I think enough will be let out to keep things moving but just enough to manipulate the price. As a retailer of def I can tell you from our sale point there is currently no money in it. It is a loss leader for us.

My Pete 359 has a factory 8V92TA whats wrong with that? 9215 injectors, water intercooler, bypass blower, it runs right along with my two C15 powered Pete 379s.
