Steve Perry was intriguing to people because of how he could use his voice to pull emotions through the music. There are lyrics, and there is a deep layer of depth to the lyrics because he can make you feel the emotion that come from the words. I think Steve Perry was what made this band famous and alluring.

My apologies to anyone who has made these points before me in the comments. This is indeed Steve Perry singing. His voice became more gruff due to the relentless touring the band did, but he still kept his quality and range until the mid 80s when he retired. Journey began as a Santana spin off band with Greg Rollie on keys and vocals and Neil Schon on guitar (both from Santana). Earlier Journey sounded very much like Santana without the Latin influence with Rollie on vocals (singer of Black Magic Woman etc...). They found Perry and he gradually took over the lead vocal role, with their early hits with Perry often sharing lead vocals Rollie. When Rollie left he was replaced with Johnathan Cain from the Babies who brought a new style of songwriting and a new keyboard style for the 80s (the synthesizer replaced Rollie’s go to Hammond organ). This obviously did very well for Journey. There are three phases of Journey: The pre Perry Rollie era, the Rollie/Perry era, and the Perry/Cain mega 80s hit era. I like them all. This song sits in the Rollie/Perry era.

You need to listen to 'Still They Ride' 'Mother Father' 'Stone In Love ' Steve Perry is the GOAT VOICE of all time. He will never be duplicated because God broke the mold after perfection was created. His ability to reach the high notes and hold them forever is crazy good. Steve joined the band in 1978 when I was 12 years old. They have been my favorite band since then. Seeing them in concert was an experience. They pioneered the light show and screens in concerts. Journey is one of those bands that you can recognize the song within the first few notes.

It’s Steve Perry also from mid 70’s to early nineties. Then they tried with a bunch of singers after that. Never was the same without Perry.😔

Understand the reasons why they stay away from Pantera but also think it cheapens what the rest of the guys in that band did in a way. So many people turned off from a monster band because their singer is a loudmouth. That's a damn shame.

Infinity was the first album with Steve Perry. He's the main vocalist on the album.. Greg Rolie takes over some of the vocals on Feeling That Way/Anytime....Neal Schon and Greg Rolie were members of Santana at one time...Ainsley Dunbar is on drums here. He left not long after this to join The Jefferson Starship. This was probably Journey's best album... Not one bad tune on the album..The band's sound changed when Greg Rolie left. The band became more pop with the addition of Jonathan Cain, who replaced Greg Rolie.

Love your reactions/reviews. You guys are very open and spot on often in your opinions. Journey was a very influential and pioneers to the times and changes in music. To see them live, you get a different appreciation for the differences in their sound. They were one of the few bands to pivot when it was necessary during that time and moving forward. You should give the band Foreigner a listen (Hot Blooded, Double Vision or Jukebox hero). Keep up the great content fellas.

*You should check out his guitar player at the time Lincoln Brewster.* He became one of the best artist in Christian music in my musically qualified opinion. Hands down he is one of the most amazing guitarist out there today. Never a dull moment in his songs that are very, very well done and not the usual fair of what you might think church music sounds like. Just when you think every technique has been done he will take you to another level. I'm not overstating his talent in any way. It proves that God is in charge of the best of the best. With Lincoln Brewster, Christian music is no longer sounding like tame child's play and no beat to it. The full sound and message whether it be reflective or turned up full on concert volume for Jesus it's always spot on. Look him up for your own taste of a great guitarist and music that is powerful and focused on God. You will not be disappointed....... even if you don't believe....... yet. ":^)
