A family member of mine was a journalist in Mexico, the cartel threatened her and almost kidnapped her daughter. She left the country and is a carpenter. She is a strong woman, I'm honestly glad she is with me still alive.

My dad was born in Mexico, Sinaloa specifically and it’s such a damn shame because it has so much potential as a whole. From the agriculture, to tourism, history, some of the best fishing. Mexico is so beautiful and could be so much more if it weren’t for the cartels taking over and all the corruption. They’re the worst types of people. Amazing journalism Vice. I can assure you they don’t make more than $200 a week. Even if they made thousands a week, becoming a journalist in Mexico most of the time means certain death in a very violent way. You don’t pursue these careers for money, you doit for your countrymen & the future of your children.

He Keeps the poor under-educated and buys then with food and show so they will support him, blind to the problems of this crumbling country he is running. As you see, He managed to divide the country, so now they attack anyone who is against the president, further worsening the Situation of the country. From planning on dissolving the National institution of elections, to focusing on non eco-friendly energy sources like petrol (stopping development of green energy around the country) and destroying the Jungle to build a stupid train nobody needs. Really a joke of a president.

There is something especially disgusting about corrupt politicians. You have been chosen by the people to represent and serve them in a prestigious, well-compensated position. And what do they do? They betray this trust. Makes my skin crawl.

This journalist asked such an open ended question to a highly complex issue that has been embedded for generations. You ask an open ended question, you will get an open ended response. He could just point to the million and one things they are doing to help protect the free press in Mexico. One of which was able to attend a daily 7am press conference with the president - Monday through Friday all year round. You can't get this opportunity any where else in the world - the shows how important free press is in Mexico and the current president. Good luck ever getting that with Biden or Trump on a daily basis.

I love the honest integrity that Vice gives their stories. I really feel badly for the reporters in Mexico and I applaud their bravery. It is obvious to me that the shadow reporters whom I don't consider reporters at all, are the police officers supposedly investigating because it seems like they're the only ones who can get that close to take such graphic pictures and have such detailed information.

Not sure where you’ve been lately…but their “home country” has a MAJOR issue of division and false/inaccurate information used to dramatize political rhetoric, and create divides within the population. Picking a side…even the “virtuous” side…is perpetuating a system used to suppress and control people. (FYI: I pretty much side with everything VICE on most things they report on. I’d just like to see them so it while being UN-refutable. Being refutable only garners traction for your “opposition”.

The Vice pieces focusing on America usually are biased and partisan. And a lot of the international ones too. There is a huge difference between the Vice of old and the Vice of today. That difference? Same as everything else: corporatism and shutting down whatever doesn't go with the mainstream narrative. We live in an age where one must decode what the various media platforms are reporting in order to have any sense of what's really going on. I'm fearful of the future and what's in store for my 5 year old. Or maybe I'm a loony lefty bleeding heart conspiracy theorist.

I remember when I was a child growing up in the 90’s when my parents would take my sister and I to Mexico for vacation and we would visit family, go to the beach, theaters, go out at night to festivals, etc etc and just have fun without any worry of cartels shooting and killing people. Don’t get me wrong there were still cartels back then but they had at least some form of dignity as far as the cartels of this generation. By no means am I defending what they represent, but in terms of ruthless meaningless assassinations, they only did that to each other in the 90’s. These new cartel members have no souls, no respect for human life no type of code of honor. It’s so sad I may never be able to take my children to visit the places I used to visit as a child so they can see where our roots come from. Maybe one day Mexico will be at peace again, but not anytime soon I’m afraid😞

I think this brutality is caused by the decentralization of the Narcos. As you say in the 90´s basically a few big cartels did dominate and control everything, so within that territory no gang violence, no shootings, nothing, because its under the control of one big Cartel. Mexico has a more extreme version of the same problem that Russia has. The people don't speak out or talk bad against power because they don't want to be targeted by corrupt officials that have ties to cartels. At this point cartels are so entrenched into the culture and communities that they are apart of mexican identity. Only way the problem can be solved is to legalize and regulate drugs.

I came from Mexico to the US at around 8 years old and my parents and brothers tell me all these beautiful stories about Mexico and how amazing it was. Unfortunately all I see now is how dangerous the country is how corrupt it has become. It sucks that I’ll never be able to live those memories my parents and brothers had since you’re always at risk of being involved in a crime.

As a Mexican born citizen, I am ashamed of having AMLO as a president of my country; nothing has changed in the country for the well being of the nation

I live in Tijuana and I want to congratulate whoever makes these documentaries, I can confirm that the story is very well told and what is experienced here is well portrayed.

Huge respect for the Mexican journalists putting their lives on the line literally. They continue to report and live there and can't just report and leave like vice does.

Man this reminds me of the movie Nightcrawler, except this is real life and a real selfless reporter driving through the thick mist of danger and uncertainty everynight just to shine light on henious crimes being committed in the shade of moon. I cannot fathom how much courage it takes to put your life on the line and chase these stories knowing well that you might end up being the victim in a crime story.

There’s no argument anymore…society has written it off. “It will hurt some people” just doesn’t fly anymore. Strobe lights can “hurt some people”. I live in Tijuana, the colony where I live is pretty peaceful, almost never experienced any violent events and I can go outside with no problems at all, 2:31 When I started working in Camino Verde during my High School years it was like stepping in another country, constantly getting news of shootings, murders and in one ocassion witnessing a freshly killed body in front of a school, and noneone seemed fazed, since it was normal for them to witness such things.

This is a news story about human rights being violated and being being killed. Not exactly appropriate place for your “LOOK AT ME” comment. Beg for attention elsewhere, kiddo. You’re being EXTREMELY dismissive.

My heart bleeds for Mexico. Big love for the courageous Mexican people putting their lives on the line trying to make light of the criminality disfiguring their beautiful country. Journalists are not snitches.

This is one of the same tactics that the PRI used when they ruled from the 20’s to all the way up to 2000. Instead of actually repressing the press or people who disagree of their government, they would just get people to mock them, humiliate them, disappear them, and it’s so subtle because it isn’t like Venezuela. But this new government is just like the PRI, only difference is that it isn’t a one party state, more like mesh that is so complicated. But Mexico does have some of its fundamental Democratic systems right now, and the independent press getting killed is just tarnishing this young democracy. Hope small independent journalists, independent judges, officers, community leaders, transparency organizations, and others can hold on against this tyranny.

@@zvrdoz4988 It will most likely never end but there’s ways to lessen the damage done. There will always be corruption where there’s money/power. Greed is an innate characteristic of animals.

I can't imagine that the person that the VICE reporter was talking too was proud that an innocent man died because of a misunderstanding. The person, from what I understood, meant that they did their work so "well" to annoy the cartel(s) that they, the cartel(s), have people they think are connected to these anonyms Facebook pages killed. I mean it has to show that what they are doing is getting on these cartel(s) nerves. Im very sorry for the loss of human life and that innocent people are suffering because of a horrible government. My Condolences goes to everyone affected by these horrific crimes.

That’s a couple miles from San Diego. I always heard that it’s been rough lately in Baja California. However, it’s reached a peak compared to other cities in México. As someone who has family in Baja California I always feel worried because some cartels have no remorse. Men, women, or kids… They don’t care. Thanks once again VICE. You guys are the best!

I live in one of the states mentioned in this excellent report. A general understanding is that, in Mexico, only 1% of homicides are solved. My best wishes to all journalists in the world.

If not responsible they provide the info and photos… most of the times our police is so corrupted that they work for the cartel. We don’t trust them at all. They are the worst of the worst.

Vice deserves at least 20M subscribers for risking their lives just to give us quality journalism on such a dangerous topic.

I feel like it's the police running these anonymous FB pages or there's a person or person's running these anonymous pages and the "sources" are the authorities.

Well I’m in serious fear for this segments host because feels like everyone who questions the Mexican president is shitted on and Ultimately killed might not because he’s an American citizen

Not only people from mexico get their news on facebook but also people who imigrated from mexico that live in the US they do aswell.

Remember that there is good within humanity, even in a world as torn as the one you may be living in or that you perceive and experience. For all the evil in this world, there is still ultimately light. God reigns over reality and no matter how fallen this world may be, in the end, the light of God and Christ is what will make things ultimately better and the Lord will be He who heals the brokenness of your heartbroken and saddened soul. Don't give up or lose faith in the goodness of God or the humanity of which He created, there is still light even in the blackest of nights from the glow of the stars which will forever shine upon us in this fallen and broken world. As long as the good people in this world, likely meaning good people such as yourself, fight and continue to persevere in spite of the terrors of the wicked, goodness and love will remain a part of this fractured world and it only takes a little bit of light to expel a lot of darkness my friend

VICE team, if you do a report similar to the interview with the CJNG commander, go to Tamaulipas in Reynosa, Matamoros or Nuevo Laredo There they could contact a member of the Gulf Cartel or the Northeast Cartel and the violence that literally takes place every day in that state.

Little by little i started watching VICE documentaries and now i watch em alot, im so amazed by the quality they have, the way every reported puts their life on the line!!! MASSIVE BIG UPS!!!!

You guys are awesome and I truly thank all of you for doing sound, solid reporting. Mexico can be a deadly realization for reporters who report the facts. It appears to be getting worse and I don't believe it is going to get better anytime soon however, if it is going to be safe for reporters in the future, then many more reporters are going to be in the crosshairs and the results will be deaths. Even though it's getting worse, I'm hoping that it will improve in about 10-15 years. Until then, I have much respect for reporters who risk their life.

@@jarnohealth my grandparents travel from Minnesota to Veracruz and have always bend safe when they were growing up there. Even when they were living in Mexico City in the 80’s. Mexico is still a big country (territory) it’s not all dangerous and for the most part if you don’t go looking for trouble you’ll be safe.

It’s sad to see that the cartels have taken over Mexico 🇲🇽 vice thank you for always risking your life to bring us the viewers this amazing content. Keep up the great work and may god bless you all.

They actually haven't, they control some areas, butn not the whole countrym the reason for that is that the goverment lets them, there's a really good podcast with an ex special forces in which he explains that of the Mexican goverment wanted to end the cartels they could, but is obvious they are getting paid to let them work, only when the cartels over step they boundaries the goverment does something, like when the CJNG recently took control of pretty much the state of Michoacan literally like in 1 month the army retake control of most of the state and righ now is returning to the old status quo of i loet you operate but don't get crazy, also when los Zetas became super big an dangerous the goverment dismatle them, so yeah the Army and teh goverment have the capacity of just end this crap but maqn the money is so good so they don't do it.
