ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.
ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S CAROUSEL
Set in a small New England factory town, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s timeless musical Carousel describes the tragic romance between a troubled carnival barker and the young woman who gives up everything for him. Elevated to an epic scale with a sweeping musical score that features some of the most beloved numbers in the American songbook, and incandescent ballet sequences, this story of passion, loss, and redemption introduced Broadway to a new manner of musical drama and would captivate theatergoers for generations to come.

because you are hearing him tell the story. He's not really singing, he is "talking" in his mind. You think his is singing, but the actor knows his job is to voice his character's emotional state, not "sing". His performance is by far more interesting because of that..

I was waiting to see how he dealt with the original lyrics ("pink and white as peaches and cream). I'm a 75-year-old African-American and I loved this "Soliloquy" so much, that I sang it in front of my high school Music Appreciation class, never thinking about the oddity of having a "pink and white" little girl. Oddly enough, he left the "pink and white" in for the little boys.

@@r4b32t11 when I say he is underrated, I mean that when people usually talk about theatre performers, he is not one of the ones people talk about. People tend to talk about the more well known actors over someone like Joshua Henry. I have seen him in several shows now and every time he blows me away with his performance. He can easily go from playing a classic like Billy Bigelow to playing Aaron Burr or Favorite Son in "American Idiot". So yes, with someone as versatile and talented as he is- I do believe he is underrated. He's been steadily performing for years & I can't wait for the day the world recognizes his talent.

I don’t know about surpassed, but definitely matched. Matched in power, beauty, richness and tone. Surpassed in emotional depth, absolutely. But then there’s that last note where John Raitt’s voice just flies up a couple of octaves (well, that’s what it feels like anyway) that leaves me stunned every time. Joshua Henry doesn’t do that, but his last note still soars and packs a wallop. I cried, too. I mean no disrespect by disputing whether or not he surpasses John Raitt. It’s a quibble, really. He is absolutely one of the best, no doubt. Stunning.

Indeed. I know he adores performing Jazz but the truth of the matter is that his somewhat operatic voice he uses for music like this sets him apart from most other musical singers. This style of music shows his voice off much better than the jazz I have heard him sing. He is the best Billy Bigelow I’ve watched. He adds so much nuance and emotion that was always needed in the piece that no other actor who portrayed this role has executed successfully. Every other actor who played Billy can be seen struggling with the song itself hence the quality of acting is absent. Joshua Henry is the real definition of triple threat; does not sacrifice one element over the other.

Absolutely magnificent! When I am challenged about the presence of higher power, overwhelming abundance, shining glory, astounding beauty, art of flawless caliber, character/ energy/ talent/ passion that pushes beyond what's thought possible it is performances like this created by artists like this that come to mind and there can simply be no denying the presence of blinding beauty, the potential of humanity connecting with spirit... and graceful love beyond all understanding. 💓
