Cheptegei is the new king. But, no matter what happens, it's always a joy to see Bekele run. And let's not forget he's at least a decade older than everyone else at this point. In fact, Cheptegei was only 9 years old when Bekele broke the 5,000m/10,000m world records. Given his prowess at XC and the 5,000m/10,000m doubles at the Olympics and World Championships (and occasional flashes of genius on the road) he's still the GOAT in my book.

I think bekele has the fitness to run one of the best times but his injuries are the only thing that holds him back

I'm running Valencia on Sunday and the weather looks like it will be perfect for marathon racing.

I have been waiting for Cheptegei's marathon debut. I think he will easily win.

@@AnthonyMcqueen1987 I agree with you. Road races are closer to marathon and Kibowatt Kandie has been very consistent in his road races. He has even beaten Joshua,and Kiplimo,and has run at least one marathon. He is the one who might surprise people. But if Bekele is not slowed down by age,and self doubt by being away so long, he should win.

Yeah but I think there must be a reason why he kept trying rather than just retired. He must be still hunger and believe something left in him. Usain bolt and mo farah not hesitate to retire after they're not feeling themselves and also to protect their undisputed record.

I totally agree with you. That's why I said in my earlier post that,self doubt might affect him ,and that would be prominent if at 30K there would still be a group of -hungry young lions.

I am a huge Bekele fan, but the current 10k WR holder vs old 10k WR holder! I think Kandie and Cheptegi will be battling it out

It would be difficult for Bekele to win considering his age... not that he isn't amazing!

In this Valencia marathon have so many elite level athletes more experienced than kandie and chepteguei, and bekele is miles away for is prime.the Next super match in marathon is between kiptum and kipchoge , The undisputed kings in 42 k. i wait for see, maybe in 2024 Berlin marathon.....,..

I just hope that Bekele finish on a good time. I dont think he wins but ...

I know the leads will get pacers. I would like the scoop on how they decide what the pace is going to be. Also I wonder if organizers are going to have 2:08 pacers for the Olympic hopefuls.

I respect Bekele a lot - he is G.O.A.T. to me. I think it is time to finish elite level running career. Too many injuries.

Bekele is done. He'll either run 2:06-2:08, or drop out.

Agree, best he can do is 2:05 and masters wr. But he doesn't accept that so he'll run too fast trying to stay in the lead pack and then drop out.

I predicted 2:05, he run 2:04:19. Good for him :) Luckily he stayed out of the lead pack and finished in a good time. Still I think he is not capable of winning with times like 2:01. @@asherc7090

Not expecting much from Bekele he is in his 40s past his prime, and for some reason or another he somehow gets injured or drops out of marathons frequently. The only thing that will surprise me is if he finishs this race with no issues the man has a lot of miles on his feet and body so will see. And i also seeing Cheptegei not winning his debut race either on the track he has been losing his stride since 2020 when he was on top of the world breaking records. So will just have to wait and see.

I think it will be run between 2'01/2'02 and the podium will be Kandie, Geay and Mutiso, Bekele top 10 in 2'06 or less and Chepteguei top 10 also maybe sub 2'05 but he will not make the podium

If Kibiwott kandie will not concentrate more on breaking the half marathon record in the first half marathon the battle will be btn him and cheptengei and maybe Mutiso

What happened to Kiptums participation?

Is Bekele trying to get his masters marathon record back? I think that’s the realistic expectation, not a world record.

If Kandie is near the from with a half mile to go I don’t see even cheptegei out kicking him.

I think everyone expected Bekele to storm the marathon when he made the switch, but it just never happened. Yes, a couple of standout performances, but only 2 wins and too many injuries and dropouts. It's a pity, because if we'd really seen him at his best in the years after he made the switch it could have been spectacular. I'd loved to be proved wrong, but I can't see him getting within a couple of minutes of the others unless it's a slow tactical race (which it won't be), and he will quite likely drop out.

I've got Cheptegei winning this race in under 2:03, Kandie placing 2nd in the mid 2:03s, and Bekele 3rd in 2:04, setting a new Masters world record in the process. I believe Bekele gives those other 2 far more of a scare than most are expecting. If it's more of a tactical race by some chance with surges and pace changes before an all-out finish, he could even win it.
