Josha Stradowski & Rosamund Pike about the struggle of adapting new The Wheel of Time seasons

Фильм және анимация

I had the honor of speaking with Rosamund Pike and Josha Stradowski about the adapting the new seasons of Wheel of Time and how hard it is to really make the character feel as alive as they are felt in Robert Jordans books. Also, it seem like the third season is really fun to be recording!
The second season of The Wheel of Time drops on September 1.
FYI: This interview was recorded June 27th, a few weeks prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

I have to disagree with you on this. Every time he brings up the mental health crap it turns me off from even wanting to give it a chance. The adult Rand angle just doesn't fit. He's working at a mental health clinic... What? Why? It's just dumb.

I have been listening to Pike’s version of the audiobooks and have been significantly impressed with her audio characterizations. For the voices of characters we came to know in the first season, she does such a close version of her co-actors’ voices that I can see them saying the lines, even the deeper-voiced male characters such as Perrin. For the characters who aren’t in the first season, the voices are so memorable and distinct that after a while, I can recognize who is speaking before the text says who it is. At this point, I will buy any audiobook she narrates even if I am not familiar with the book.

Most of the fans of the books are struggling with the show. I read the books first and then watched the show. I LOVE the books. The show is entertaining, but a horrible adaptation of them. I keep reminding myself that it's not really the "Wheel of Time" like an adaptation from one medium to another, it's an adaptation from one story to retelling it as a different story. kind of like Hercules, the legend continues, or Xena Warrior princess. as long as. I remind myself that it's just a fun fantasy show I can enjoy it like I enjoyed watching Xena growing up.

@@JonatanBlombergInterviewsyou should listen to the ones by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading. Million times better. I did the same thing with Eragon. I watched the movie and thought it was ok, then I read the books and realized how garbage the movie was. This show I believe is much much worse. I think the fans of the book ( myself included) are mad because this is the only chance we will have for an adaption of the book and they couldn't even be bothered to put a Harron on the hilt of the sword. It's details like that that show just how much these "huge fans" don't really care. It's almost like they are reading 1 book at a time and not understanding the consequences of what they're doing. I already know season 2 is going to be a dumpster fire because Mat isn't even where he's supposed to be. He needs to be with Rand right now unless they plan on skipping the whole hunt. They can't use the ways and they are thousands of miles from the white tower( though he should be in Caemlyn.) Fans are going to be furious if they take the horn from Mat. They said it was going to be hard to tell the whole story yet they spent 2 or 3 episodes of things that didn't even happen. At this point I guess y'all can enjoy it but I've already given up on the show.

They can't adapt one book per season, even Amazon isn't going to greenlight 14 seasons of television all at once - and with all these production challenges over the past few years, and the strikes, it would have taken closer to two whole decades to film 14 seasons, which means a story that is supposed to take 2-3 would see characters aging decades too much by the end. So they're adapting the story AS A WHOLE. They have to reformat and remix plot arcs. To capture the spirit of the story, they have to break free from literally and assiduously following every single plot point. For instance: Rand is going to be struggling, not against being the Dragon, but against what is expected of him because of that. This is a brilliant way to capture the essence of his book 3 arc while capturing the actual events of his book 2 arc. And Josha is on a reread now, and is so into being Rand that he's apparently wearing dragon jackets IRL, so I completely trust that he will bring all the pathos we could ask for in his representation of Rand's struggles.

  • @toddjackson3136

    @toddjackson3136

    11 ай бұрын

@maxsilva11 I agree that they can not adapt the whole show. And they are going to need to take liberties and capture the essence and spirit of a lot of things. but there is a lot of just plain bad writing and examples of them not understanding the motivations behind what is going on. that's the things that made us fall in love with the books. We enjoy our favorite characters because of their struggles and the things going on behind the scenes that we identified with. what we are seeing on screen is not a representation of our favorite characters. I already have different characters that I enjoy in the show more than what I did in the book. Because my favorite characters from the book are not being adequately portrayed in the show. however, I also know that other fans of the show like my favorite characters from the book because of the way that they depicted them in the show. That's why I said it's not a faithful adaptation media to media. It's more an adaptation story to story. They are hitting most of the heartbeats but that will only keep them on life support if they're trying for a faithful straight across retelling. I have to view the TV show as it's own thing and not as the book series.

@@JonatanBlombergInterviews Hmm well, as much as I hate what they've done to the story, changing history, personalities, the lore, the magic system heck they couldn't even get the climate of Shienar/Fal Dara right placing it in a dessert - they clearly aren't even trying. One tries to judge the show on its own merits. It is a mess, maybe not the WORST show to come out in recent years, still trying to decide if that's Willow or Blood Origins, but it is not all that far behind. Edit. I do admit I am a bit curious though, Padan Fain, are they going to explain away how he could enter the waygates since they changed how that works too? In the show you need to One Power to activate them.. which would have made them useless for the Ogier for whom they were constructed in the first place. And how did Padan Fain get hold of the Shadar Logoth dagger? Also, Will they let Loial die? I checked and didn't see his character amongst the names for first ep of season 2. Or will they also conveniently forget what being stabbed by the Shadar Logoth dagger means? Maybe that doesn't matter though as Nynaeve now can cure death, which is supposed to be the one thing the One Power can't do, just goes to show, you can't predict anything about what will happen or what they can or cannot do.

I obviously am not feeling like The Wheel of Time tv show version is anywhere close to being a masterpiece or anything like that, but just really nice and silly fantasy entertainment that makes me enjoy myself while watching. And that is more than a lot of other stuff has managed to do the last couple of years. I kind of feel like this is a higher budget version of The Shannara Chronicles (not speaking about lore or anything now, but just as far as fantasy tv shows goes you know). Coming in from the side with no expectations and not having read the books I think that's probably what makes me being able to truly enjoy this show - also I think the second season is better than the first but there is still an embargo until August 31st, so can't get into any more details than that at this moment :)

It's no good trying to do these PR interview sessions. The TV WoT is a complete dogs breakfast and the show runners should be ashamed of the travesty they have wrought in the name of their ludicrous ideology. We can but hope that once all this societal nonsense is properly rebuked into the dustbin of history we can have another go at making an adaptation of this epic tale. I am particularly aggrieved with Rosamund Pike; I had hoped her previous experience with the material would have helped her fight the corruption. Plus she teased me terribly with the fight in episode one, making me think this was going to be a wonderful show as they illustrated the power of the Aes Sedai and the wonderful Warder Bond. But it was not to be.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by and I hope you find some other shows (maybe from my other interviews) that you like! (copy/pasted this from an other comment similar to yours but felt it conveyed what I felt here as well)

@@charlesmatheka7707 Yeah, I believe I have too! Constantly watching new tv shows and covering them leaves very little extra time unfortunatly, but I’ve begun with the audiobook for the first one now!

His English is sooooo bad, inarticulate and not natural or fluid. Why would they allow this? I feel bad for the two actors and could not stomach to watch... #Awkward

Sorry to hear that. English is not my first language and the interview was later translated into Swedish and written for the Nordic market, which is why they ”allowed” it. The clip here is just for any English speakers to be able to hear their responses in English as well. From what I’ve been able to gather from the rest of the comments here, most seems to have enjoyed their answers - too bad you couldn’t last long enough to watch those parts. Hope you find what you’re looking for somewhere else though, best of luck! :)
