Josh Smith is a ferocious blues guitarist.
But his most brilliant approach is actually amazingly simple.
Using this one trick, he creates a melody and a song every time he plays the blues!

In jazz I think they call it exposition, development and recapitulation. Josh is one of my all time favorites...His phrasing is out of this world and he's got the elusive Albert Collins burn and tone taken to the next level. Just an amazing player. Tim is a monster too, he's so good it makes me smile.

This is such an awesome lesson. When I was spending time writing more Melodie’s, I always adhered to “anything worth saying once is worth saying twice” and often played my guitar solos that way. Those solos were the ones everyone talked about.

This whole concept reminds me of the John Mayer video where he goes to Berkely College Of Music and jams with Tomo Fujita and explains this exact idea. And when Tomo plays the entire audience goes nuts when he plays just a simple phrase but plays it with finesse and John says "now you have the entire neck left to go wherever you want".

JOSH is also amazing... and "alive." He's just making sure the message continues to be heard and gets passed down to all that can benefit. I absolutely love and respect Josh Smith. He, too, is obviously a brilliant musician, but the passion he displays for everything his craft entails is nearly unsurpassed in my book (well, along with Tim Pierce, as well). Check out ANYTHING from him. He's all heart, and he can barely keep his Enormous talent and passion contained, or that huge, talented Heart of his will explode. We are so lucky to have him in our life's timeline.

Larry Carlton also suggests that simplification is the key to a memorable solo especially in blues when you have 5 recurring notes to emphasize. Tim's lick is melodic and rockin' at the same time and can be repeated at different positions on the neck to add variety. Very valuable lesson there.

You're basically describing the way Jerry Garcia played guitar, the other day I watched one of your videos and you suggested that we play like our life depends on it. This is another Jerry Garcia philosophy. I heard a story once where he did a little too much acid any thoughts of mobsters were going to kill him as soon as he got off stage. So just play like you got a gun pointed at your head and you will kill it every time! Mucho gracias! You and Beto... are the Jedi Masters. May the tone be with you!

I learned this as kid. I picked up bass to get in a band with my friends, playing tone support was boring me. Our drummer taught me the "Bootsy Collins" jive... Always come back to "1". Coming back on the count of 1 playing the same lick, then go walking around the rest of the counts. The 1 will hook your ear. I picked up the same style in my soloing, timing my solo off the drummer and hitting that sweet lick every time the drummer gives me a sweet spot or if he's repeating a fill I can hook up with.
