GRiMHOLD This is actually a valid and common way of coping with war. The two common ways of dealing with war, is thinking deeply about it, often thinking as logically and rationally as possible, as thinking deeply about killing someone will cause depression, and you see those effects in Lonnie. And the other is to not think about it. To switch off your emotions completely, and make it a game. Some people can cope with thinking deeply about what you are doing. Others think about it deeply, but struggle with the emotions involved, which can cause depression, regret, anguish etc. And other can't cope in any way with thinking deeply about it, so they don't think. They just do. Once can argue morality, which one is the better soldier, does either pose a danger upon reentering society, but that fact remains that both are extremely common ways of coping with warfare, and anyone who has spent a second looking at war will notice to large subsets of character emerge; the deep, philosophical, pondering soldier. And the balls to the wall, this is awesome soldier. You can find cases of both of those dating back prior to WW1, and in all the wars since.

@@falcaofalcao4315 I don't know which country you live in but I respect your honest opinion. Please understand that guys like Josh is why we still have our U.S Constitutional Rights. I know its hard for civilians to realize it but, understand that war is hell, war is horrible and no Combat Veteran actually enjoys violence after witnessing it. Dark humor is a way to cope after stressful moments. Everyone handles it differently and what you witnessed within this video is a coping mechanism. Some people completely stop functioning and cry in a corner while others learn to push past their emotions and move on. This coping mechanism isn't only found within the Military though. Ask anyone who works within high stressful situations on a daily basis and you might just find the same type of mentality. As dark as it may seem, we need folks like Josh. I wish to see a World where there are no wars, hatred, murder and killings but it currently does not exist nor will it ever exist. I will end it off with a quote "We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us", Winston S. Churchill. You have a wonderful day and sleep peacefully!

@@stevenbaas4011 Cause of society, this kind of "wrong" way of thinking of war is really criticized by the society, and you can see it in the commments, people arguing whether he is a psycopath or a hero, calling him a "mindfuck motherfucker" or that he has mental issues. And to be honest, the way he sees war is not wrong at all, want to protect himself and his family, joining the army so civilians like us dont go to war and experiment what it feel like to kill someone; everyone that is on a war is there because they wanted to, they know what they are doing and they are willing to sacrifice themselves for others (Unless you lived in a country like Argentina, where military service was mandatory as soon as you hitted 18y.o, or you are a civilian in crossfire, but thats a different issue) Theres no life more valuable than other, unless that life is yours. Its a cruel and complex world, but thats the way it is, but this guy face it the best way someone could do, and people calling him a bunch of stuff its really irritating, fucking hypocrites. Thats why someone "should cover himself" over society, to avoid all of this useless and hypocrite criticism and judging.

This guy CLEARLY hasn´t experience the horrors of 20th century warfare, he probably spent 70% of his combat time in a hunkered down position shooting at targets that couldn´t even shoot back cuz they don´t even have sights on their weapons...no, "killing is killing" is a ridiculous over-simplification of the matter. At least he is honest. Half of these combat vets, or more have liked killing at some point during their time in war. They will tell you how awful it was, they will cry, they will say "War is hell", but they will tell you too that as much as they hated it, they liked it too. People don't want to hear that though. People need to hear that its only repulsive, and awful. These guys are trained to kill, without remorse, without any care in the world. These guys are thrown into the meat grinder, and in the act of combat and killing to survive, they find a euphoric kind of existence that cannot be achieved in any other way. Imagine being in combat for a few months, constantly being terrified, constantly being attacked, constantly having your emotions all over the place. Do you have any idea how fucking hard it would be to go back to a normal life after you had been mainlining the most intense kinds of feelings you could ever imagine? If people can understand how difficult it is to kick a drug habit, why is so hard to understand this as anything but the same thing? Crack Cocaine offers you the most incredible god damn feeling you can imagine. Killing people in War offers you the most incredible fucking rush you can imagine. Imagine doing it for months, imagine how fucked you would be emotionally. How can you go back to your normal life? How can you go back to your normal life knowing that nothing you will ever do for the rest of your life will ever be even a fraction as intense, or meaningful as those days in combat were? It fucking bothers me that this is such an abstract concept to people. You're talking about a blood sport that is at the pinnacle of a living existence. There can be nothing more primal, or intense than a fight to the death. If you guys actually got the truth out of most combat veterans, you wouldn't find this video so fucking hard to believe. And it really pisses me off that you guys cannot look at this any other way than in absolute disgust, and throwing your own repulsive behavior at them. It says way more about you assholes than it does about this guy.

I laughed my ass off! For those who may not know it’s very common for combat veterans (or anyone in the military) to have developed a dark sense of humor. Helps to relieve stress. So this was basically a mainly comedic approach to this subject. I hope that makes it clear (for those who were unaware) that he isn’t batshit or cold, he’s just funny. Thanks for your service all veterans who read this and especially the man in this video.

I am a Vietnam/Cambodia combat vet. I am also 70 years of age. Guess What? Yes, I still miss combat. Your senses are totally awake, and for me, when the shooting started, everything slowed down form me. Something similar to a slow-motion video. That why Vets do things like going down the interstate, at night, with the lights off and doing 120 mph. My first kill was not a 500 yeard shot or a 100-yard shot. No, my first kill was up close and personal. I held a NVA Soldier in my hands and blew his face off. Not only did I fell the recoil of the .45 cal M1911, with my right hand, I also felt the bullet strike his body every time with my left hand. Up close and personal!

You are going to have two people, the people that haven't done it and the people that have. Out of them there are two people. The people have not done it are either a pussy or they talk about a lot of shit they don't understand. The people have done it are either struggling with it or the people that can handle the experience. The fact is most people really cannot handle those that can deal with it because true soldiers are like this man. "How can you go through something so traumatic and take something so sacred as human life?" I have not been in combat, I want to sign up, and I want to see if I can handle it or not. But I would trust this man over any other, because I know he won't snap in some shell shock episode, I know he won't bullshit lie to me about dumb shit, and I know he'll have my back in a fight. Everyone else will not l, and the softer society gets the worse the generation will have with war and violence. Keep it to those you trust, your experiences are yours and who you tell should appreciate the trust you give them. Or get fuckin laid man, no shit, both works.

I'm not saying that in 20 years he will be filled with sorrow and regret, but that maybe he will be more mature about it.

  • @CaptainMyCaptain33

    @CaptainMyCaptain33

G36Ghost He also wasn't drafted, like many of our soldiers in Vietnam. He is also still clearly very young and still very much a soldier in his mind. He talks rough and sounds like a real piece of shit. But it will pass (i hope) once he grows up, and can reflect on those killings. Trust me when I say this, in his mind it still isn't actually real. Maybe it is because he killed from far away, not face to face. Maybe it's because of a lot of things. But his head, his mind...."pussy and killing = awesome" is fucked up right now. I see this with a lot of these younger vets. Some acting tough. Some still in it in their mind. I can tell you, from experience when you look a person in the eyes and kill them. It haunts you for ever. Regardless of the justification. Yes, a man wanted to kill me. I didn't want to die. Was a game of two and I got their first. After two shots in the chest, that quick-but ever so long pause between the third shot, the kill shot.....you see a man. A human. You see it almost like yourself in the mirror. That pause, that slow motion tenth of a second as my finger squeezed, and I saw the pain, regret, sorrow and devastation in his eyes, then to see it fade into......nothing. This life that, started like my own, a man who was once a playing child who laughed smiled and thought he would grow old like me, all blow out the back of his head.....and become just this, empty thing. This pile of meat. No. I don't talk like this fuckin guy. Some people lose their perspective on what life is. It's reflected in how he talks about getting laid. Respect life. Learn to honor those you've killed, especially in war. You'll find peace. Because it really fucks your head up. In our culture, though we are war crazy, we see it on tv and in video games. We don't see brutality and shit like beheadings or public executions. So. When it becomes real. It damages you, even if you don't know it. And when it's you who do the killing. Part of you dies too. I don't want to kill anyone ever. But....if I had to, I wouldn't hesitate a second. The only thing he said that resonates with me, is there is something primal in us. And if you have that instinct or find it through training. Death happens. Even a mercy kill can be hard.... "Do you miss war?" "Hell yeah, every fuckin second of it. It's awesome". Good god..... Then go back. You're what we need in the military. I've seen it and I hope to see a world without war someday. Reflecting on it trips me out the most. I did what i did because I was scared as fuck of dying and it crushing my mother. I got home. But the memories come back with you.

When I first got out of the military after 11 years, I would openly talk about the things I saw and did while I was in. I quickly learned that is a mistake. Why? People will either think you're bat shit crazy, lying, or both. A lot of people will instantly cut you off because they can't even stomach to listen to you talk about horrible things. Their fragile mindset, and small bubble, trumps your ability to get things off of your chest by talking to somebody it. We all search for perspective. It's only then you truly feel the isolation between you and everyone else. Instead of judging this man, most of you probably haven't even been in a fistfight, understand that his "Teflon Bravado" was/is his coping mechanism. It's your naive reactions to him that hurt those who would die to protect you. If you want to show a veteran who was willing to die so YOU never have to face these things yourself a tiny bit of gratitude, just listen. Withhold your judgment as you clearly are way outside of your bubble/lane. Peace to you brother.

Most americans live in a bubble of luxury and have no idea how the real world is and how in many places it is a kill or be killed dog eat dog reality and how true evil truly exists out there. At the same time, just telling a story to someone without them walking in your shoes will always leave something out of the story and their life experiences and world view will clash with someone who has been through war. Thank you for your service.

I can respect your point on this. As a child, I grew up with many WW2, Korean War and Vietnam War vets. They had some wild stories. Some of the WW2 vets had “souvenirs” (as one called them) they brought back. We used to play with a German infantry helmet with a bullet hole in it as well as a bayonet-when we were 5-6 years old. We never questioned it. When we were old enough to put two and two together, we asked about it. They were more than willing to tell and I was always wanting to hear their stories, even when I was probably too young to hear them. I appreciated them and their stories-not just because they were interesting, but because of the perspective it gave me on how good I had/have it here compared to the rest of the world. They didn’t kill because they wanted to. They did it to survive and live another day; so their fellow soldiers could survive and live another day. It was for the greater good of our country and the rest of the world. Josh is right-it’s very primal-very base instincts. Kill or be killed.

Jack mannjaw People like you are hilarious for war vets to listen to. Do you actually believe that in a war zone soldiers/marines sit around and say “man I feel like I’m really doing a prestigious and heroic thing. We really are making a difference here”? No! That’s what people like you don’t understand. Vets don’t give a fuck why they’re there much less if what they’re doing is noble. They just care about the guy to there left and right and how they’re going to do anything it takes to make sure they make it out alive. The majority don’t feel “guilty” about anything and they for damn sure don’t care if what they’re doing is right or wrong. Their country called on them and they answered. It’s that simple. The only reason your country is standing and or relevant is because of the military. If you don’t like the way things are done then do something to change it instead of being a keyboard pussy on KZread.

Having watched this video right after Lonnie in ep. 2, I think I can see the difference between Lonnie and Josh. Lonnie is much older, and has had decades to grow, to process his experiences and give it a place. He looks back at his experience in war from the perspective of someone who's lived an entire life already, and old age has softened him up to see the big picture of fighting and taking a life. Josh on the other hand has been back a handful of years. I can imagine he's still trying to give his experience meaning, to make it feel worth wile. Of course war is primal, a rush and something feral, but that doesn't mean it's pretty, or good for the soul. But I get the feeling Josh's comments are more grandstanding and subconscious "wishful" thinking than a real analysis of his time there...

The realist part of this vid is that young men are going to watch it and join up expecting to go through that guy's experiences and come out the other side like that guy. In reality, if that's why the young man joins up, those experiences will probably break him harder than he ever knew he could be. The reason Josh could own his experiences is because josh had an emotional understanding deeply embedded in his identity as to why he was doing what he was doing. His stone cold stare indicates a man who knew he was a killer before he killed, in more than just his mind.

The hundreds of thousands of volunteers and men drafted during World War II went overseas to fight against tyrannical dictatorships that threatened the security of the world. THOSE men are heroes because they were there when they were NEEDED. Just look at the older men from similar interviews- what Josh is currently doing is most likely a coping mechanism.

Don't believe me? Look at things like 1979 Iranian revolution and the 1983 Beirut bombing (which killed 241 Americans). In hindsight, perhaps we shouldn't have been so concerned about communism (don't get me wrong, communism is a cancer, but at least people sometimes get tired of communist governments and leaders and stage a coup or insurrection and bring about reforms... that... that doesn't really happen for the better very often in the Islamist theocratic nations - if anything the "Domino Effect" is even worse and progressively more extreme than even communism was) and more about persuading and stopping people from killing other humans because their preferred Invisible Sky Man told them [insert group here] was bad.

He seems like a guy who had a very limited experience of the war, but likes to use the stories to glorify himself. I know vets from Vietnam and had family that fought in the Finnish Winter War & Continuation War, and none of them talked about the war like this guy. I knew a couple of guys like him, from my time in the marines, but even they weren't as obnoxious. Riding in a HMMWV, with top tier tech (compared to the enemy) and armor, shooting grenades at people, is a different experience from the horrors the old timers had to go through. This guy talks casually about how cool it is to kill people with missiles and how rad it is to see guts. Probably not that rad when it's your friend's or a child's guts. Disgusting, ignorant, childish, indifferent, disrespectful, self-centered, brainwashed, adrenaline junkie... I think many descriptions could possibly suit him.

Baychimo you need to know that they have been taught by their instructors/commanders that those people who they are fighting are savages and have no remorse for their enemies. The purpose for military training is to get you ready physically and mentally for war, they will make you a killing machine and he is an example. Also, there are some who aren’t like him that is in the military, but you can’t judge him for not feeling guilty about the people he killed, the enemies they’re fighting are no different. He is the type of soldier the military wanted.

_Hayf_ Like I said, I was/am a marine and I've talked to guys who experienced war back in the days. You don't lose your ability to think because of the training, you get better at it. Especially when you are a sniper. You get stress tested, you get taught how to handle weapons, you get "programmed" to react to orders immediately, since your life depends on it etc etc. You're thinking of some hollywood depiction of boot camp and war. I don't judge him for not wanting to die, but for glorifying the killings he has done. He sounded more like someone who has watched one too many american war movies, than a soldier who fought for his life and others "freedom".

I don't really have much to say on the matter from experience or through conversation with others. I've never been a soldier, and I've never killed anyone. Anything I have to say is pure speculation. However, there is a difference in accepting the responsibility to do what must be done and taking pleasure in it. The guy in the video expressed that he took pleasure in the act or at the very least found some entertainment value in it. It's very hard for civilians to understand how one takes pleasure or finds pleasure in the killing of other human beings regardless of their intent. To be fair, we haven't been there, and moreover, we have never gone through the training necessary to survive it. The most striking thing is not that he took pleasure. The most striking thing is that he relives that excitement inside his mind and compares everything else to those moments. Those were not good things. Firing an RPG into a man and watching his flesh be violently torn asunder is not good. Feeling no compassion toward humanity is not good. It is not good to love and to crave the feeling of performing such an act, though it may be necessary for the purposes of warfare. Those are not the things by which to base your standard of what is good. Therefore, those are not the things by which all other pursuits of life outside of war should be judged. There may be an argument to suggest a soldier might need to be trained in such a way--to gain pleasure; to find entertainment. In some respects, I think there is a strong argument to be made that such training is necessary. We might even sympathize with it on a theoretical level. But there is also an argument to suggest that there needs to be a serious debriefing process for these guys so that they might transition back into civilian life. We need them to function properly when they come back home. They are our brothers, our fathers, our husbands, our friends. We love them. Regardless of what they did in war--we love them. We need them. The problem is not that society cannot transition to meet their needs. The problem is that they cannot transition properly to meet society's needs. That mentality is necessary in war time. It is not necessary in civilian life. And I say that fully understanding that I have no right to place further expectation onto these guys. But there's no other way. It is a heavy burden. I think there's room to assume that therein lies the issues with a soldier's PTSD. There's no real effective means to bring a lot of these guys back. But, I also think it's important for someone like this guy to be the voice which helps to bring them back. A civilian cannot do it. It has to come from the voice of experience. But reliving the glory of the most heinous deeds committed in war, I think, is not the way to do it. It might be a step in the process, but it is most definitely not the place to stay. Staying there is the problem. How do we bring them back?
