His wife was an excellent vocalist that would melt you, he was quite the character. They were a blast to hang out and party with. He once said, "I sing, I dance, I play music, because the experience of life is to be celebrated". I replied, "so for you, Life's like a party". he said, "Si,... life's like a party, when party over, you go home, when life is over, you go home". Always had a positive party outlook on life. What a guy.

This past summer I had a job singing songs to children at a school. I discovered Jose Carioca from a DVD I put on that the school provided and since then he has become my favorite Disney character. I think it's interesting that I get this job and along the way I discover Jose the parrot . Then I find this footage of the real life Jose and he's doing exactly what I did all summer with the kids. Thank you so much for this.

Oliveira is playing an unusual instrument. If it were a bandolim, it would have 8 strings and this one only seems to have 4. José Oliveira was a banjo player, so this may be a 4 stringed hybrid between a cavaquinho and a resonator bandolim. My guess is that this a resonator cavaquinho. It's possible that he had a luthier use the body of resonator mandolin and the neck of a cavaco.
