I think it has to do with the fact that those are the songs you were going to when you needed to understand certain things in life Your first heartbreak, first love, etc. This is the music, more specifically, the SOUNDS, that we used to make sense of what was in front of us

Gone are days when music were real music but not today

I remember at my high school graduation they started playing this song in the background while waiting for a speaker. The entire graduating class started singing in unison, so they turned the music off and then everyone stood up and sang louder. It became our unofficial graduation song. I often wonder if anyone else from my class remembers this as a unifying moment, or just me. I didn't have many friends back then so this was one of my best memories from high school.
