You know how I know Milo's "I don't care" schtick is bogus? Because as soon as Peterson started talking about his "fall from grace", with the slightest hint of a critical tone, Milo pivoted the conversation to attempted to hurl petty insults at Peterson. Milo's concern over being canceled from CPAC might indicate he cares about participation in the prestige culture. A better question would be is there such a thing as prestige culture, and if so, what is it. I believe the prestige culture is based on the elite's concern over title. The prestige culture believes your value comes from your credentials, the opposite position is that your value comes from your personal abilities.

Peterson still thinks he will be accepted.

I think there are elements of Truth coming from both sides of this dialogue. Yes, Peterson has more wisdom, skill and patience, which explains, in part, his rise to notoriety, but more so because he was willing to risk all his “prestige” by taking a stand for the Truth. But, Peterson is also naive about who ultimately controls the levers of public opinion. And this makes him vulnerable to those who are “letting him climb higher.”

Milo, for all his faults, can recognise a preening peacock when he sees one. Don't get me wrong... the man is intelligent. Maps of Meaning proved that. I agree with your statements re Dr Peterson, but not with your statements re Mr Yiannopoulos. Mr Yiannopoulos wants to be influential, and IS influential; but the influence he exerts is in a different direction. Whereas Dr Peterson cares about educating people (both in his university classrooms, and in his clinical practice, and in his speeches, and in his books) regarding how things (especially, human minds!) work in actual reality, Mr Yiannopoulos is more interested in preaching right-wing ideology, which is NOT grounded in truth, and does not even CARE about truth, but rather, is interested only in the EFFECT it has on its audience. (Namely, to persuade them to join the Right Wing identity group and proclaim its doctrines.) If all human religions and politics were forgotten by humans today (but first recorded by an outside entity), and we tried to recreate them from scratch, we'd fail completely. We'd come up with more religions and politics, yes, but they'd be VERY DIFFERENT from the religions and politics recorded by the outside entity, because religious and political ideology is all made up and based on whim, fancy, and happenstance. Whereas, if humankind forgot all of its science today, within 1000 years we'd discover it all again, EXACTLY AS BEFORE, because it's based on REALITY, which is universal and immutable (unlike religion and politics, which are ephemeral fantasy).

If you DON'T agree, then the thing to do would be to present a counter-argument, instead of a personal attack.) As for what I sound like, why are you even mentioning that, seeing as how you've never heard my voice? If you're using "sound" metaphorically, to mean "tone", that's "responding to tone", which is a fallacy of misdirection; the TONE of an assertion has no bearing on the TRUTH of an assertion.

  • @RobbieHatley

    4 жыл бұрын

@Elpeo Puru : If your "boil down" of my comments amounts to "ugh, right wing bad, ugh", then you probably cannot understand adult diction and should probably not be attempting to communicate with adults on KZread, because that's NOT what I said. As for "wings" being "bad", yes, they all are (left, right, middle, up, down, whatever). Political "wings" are abrogation of the responsibility to THINK in favor of parroting talking points from an identity group. That's bad, yes, because it leads to a group of lemmings rather than multiple independent individuals. A human brain is a terrible thing to waste. Disagreeing with the doctrines of political "wings" is not "personal attacks", no (or anything remotely CLOSE to being "personal attacks"), for the simple reason that bad ideas are not persons. But when one starts a message to someone with "you" (eg, "You sound like..."), that's ALWAYS a personal attack, because the opening word ("you") topicalizes the message as being about the PERSON one is talking to, rather than the TOPIC under discussion. This is the informal logical fallacy of "Argumentum Ad Hominem". It is a fallacy of misdirection, much like "Look, a bird!" People engage in personal attacks when they are mentally bankrupt, so can no longer discuss the TOPIC under discussion and must hence resort to insulting the PERSON they are talking to. Generally, people are expected to grow out of this by the time they reach age 3. But alas, some don't. My advice: Refrain from using the word "you" altogether when attempting to converse with people; it helps one keep on-topic.

No doubt I'm wrong, but to me Milo is simply a contrarian: He desires, for his personal gratification, to force an emotional response to his often contradictory but deliberately provocative viewpoints. This just so that he can dump on those who might disagree using his obvious alibies as an articulate debater. To me he seems more a narcissist than someone with true passion for his beliefs.

Yes, very perceptive. Psychological projection (sometimes blatant and knowing!) is quite common in The Right Wing. The Left may be more chaotic, but at least it projects less.

ThePlacatorySock I agree with you but probably for a different reasons than you’d expect. Milo has been rejected by ‘polite’ society, I don’t think he cares. I think he relishes it, but he did not think it would be this bad. If Milo had progressive values he would still be in the limelight.

@Kane Abel Of course he is. That doesn't make the comment here ok. Peterson and Yiannopoulos both have big egos, and neither are as great as their fans make them out to be. I don't blame people for hating one or the other, however the policing of who people are allowed to associate with is a hallmark of political correctness so there's a difference between hating Milo for logical reasons vs. "He's a spooky right-wing extremist" type stuff.
