I like to assume Theo is a deep thinker, some of his jokes have some layers so talking to someone that always tries to go even deeper might even provide more substance for his comedy. Not sure though.

I once heard that most people that quit don't go to programs like AA, but quit by themselves. On average it takes 7 attempts to quit. I thought it was BS, as I was a heavy binge drinker and saw no way out. I kept trying to quit and would last a few months at most. One day I knew I was going to end up homeless or dead and decided to never touch it again. I'm not proud of who I was, but I am proud of who I am. Life will always throw reasons at you to keep drinking, but at least my suffering has value now. I accept it and learn from it. No cliches, or speeches will make you quit. It's the most important choice you have to make, and I wish you luck.

It’s very point blank and bullet proof , sometimes people get to analytical with decision making , it’s refreshing to hear either your going to stay drunk and be miserable or have to deal with your anxiety and get sober. Though I don't wish to argue and I respect your right to an opinion, I can't help but add my two cents. I was a heroin(amongst other drugs) addict for 8 years. I've been sober now for 15 years. I don't know why but it was simplicity that finally got through to me. I had been to programs, incarcerated multiple times, etc so I knew everything they try to drill into you about addiction and how to stay clean but I continued to relapse anyway. Then one day someone said to me kind of dismissively, "You can keep doing what you're doing and you'll keep getting what you've been getting. If you want something different, you've got to start moving differently." Something about that very simple phrase hit differently. Did I quit in that moment? No, but it caused a change in my mindset which in turn caused me to start making different choices. I chose to show up to probation and outpatient services instead of making excuses and skipping out. It went from there. Anyway, sometimes simple works best... Especially when the people you're talking to don't have full clarity.

After drinking nonstop for a good amount of time, and now being sober for around half a year, focusing on sports and academics, I’ll say this. I’m now much sharper, calmer, harder working, and focused. I don’t have the sad moments I used to have, and I feel self accomplished often. But, I don’t have fun or feel emotion the same way I used to. (I also smoked daily for around 8 months). Life is blander, and less exciting but your able to appreciate the small things more if that makes sense. Things are simple, and calm, yet drugs made it fast and exciting. I will always miss the phase of partying and drugs all the time, but it’s not sustainable long term. As the video said, it really is a struggle either way and your not going to be fully happy doing either. For you younglings watching, remember that drugs can give you some of the happiest and best times of your life, but they will also bring down your mental health forever, which isn’t worth it in most peoples opinions. No matter what you do, be safe, and remember to smile more, laugh more and love more.

This was one of the first videos I watched at the start of my journey; seeing two men I look up to have this conversation gave me such confidence then and I come back each year to relearn and reflect. Thank you both for helping to give so many of us the confidence and understanding to start our sobriety journeys.

Haven’t drank in six weeks, for the first time in 5 years. It’s incredible how much my life has improved. Physically, mentally, ethically, situationally, in practically every aspect my life is better. Swapping a couple nights of the week blacking out and regretting everything I do each time for the way my life is now is so damn worth it. I don’t even wanna drink. I will say this though, my life socially isn’t as good. The weekends are tough, no one likes to do anything that isn’t getting pissed in Ireland. Especially with the weather.

I lived with alcoholics in rehab/half way houses for the last 7 months and they all say their social life gets better with time, and like you said life in general gets better. Find a new social group (AA meetings are great for this) who enjoy doing things without getting fucked up first. In America there's a lot of "sober only" groups who go to events like football games and concerts together, created for people in recovery, maybe there's stuff like that near you too

Every day drunks would have a harder time. For many reasons.

I am one year sober/clean now. I somehow managed it completely without rehab, and let me tell you: it was fucking tough. And when I spoke out to my friends about it, they suddenly vanished. It was very painful to lose my social group, but I realized months later that they were holding me back from my true potential and perhaps I didn't need them around in my new sober reality. I've never felt better, and watching this really made me think about who my friends really are. Thank you, Theo.

@Brother Jake's ReconnaissanceSorry but you're VERY wrong...twice. "but your comment implies that Dr. Peterson became addicted to drugs for the same reasons you did" No it doesn't. That's a misconception on your part. He had to have an emergency detox because of said paradoxical reaction, BUT that detox STILL amounts to the nightmare of detoxing from a substance you've become dependent on=addiction.(the coma will not omit experiencing all withdraw discomfort) YES, even people who experience an opposite reaction to that which was aimed for will experience one or both forms of dependence/addiction that makes detoxing SO hard for everyone, which is what I'm alluding to in the comment. There are different 'brands" of addiction/dependence and when paired with said reaction the fight is potentially even worse(what I'm alluding to in my comment) Paradoxical reaction DOES NOT negate the potential for dependent and experiencing withdraws. Fun-Fact: I volunteer at a methadone clinic in Halifax Nova Scotia called Direction-180. I'm also going to school for addictions counseling and will be employed there in a little longer than a year.

Been on and off pot for around 10 years plus Its insane how little people realise how addictive marijuana can be, its a case by case basis. Not to mention most dont realise there's actually a withdrawal period, not as extreme as herion etc, but cold Turkey sober can cause feverish symptoms and irritability. Met a new girl, got off for around 6 months, I felt amazing, got a good job, was absolutely loving life, slept better, put on 30kg (I was originally around 60kgs at 5'9 and was TINY) Then life turned around and did what life does and become so turbulent that I turned back to pot, im still smoking now but so much more conscious of my decision to keep doing this, I know that the only way forward is with careful planning and a goal to reach sobriety. Just get by each day, even if you have to pull all nighters and just play cod or halo for 12 hours straight to distract yourself, get through that first few days and it all becomes so much easier. The first night always sucks.

After my studies as a civil engineer, which I successfully completed, I rolled into drinking. Started with a glass of port and occasionally vodka. After a few years it was a bottle of vodka a day to function properly. After various therapies and withdrawal and with the help of Tranxene, I have been on the right track for years now. After 3 months of sobriety with alcohol I went back to it after the lockdown. I was out of work for a month and lets just say the month of April was a whole lot of partying w drugs and alcohol. Fast forward to now and I’m realizing (again) how I can not live with alcohol in my life. It’s what’s going to kill me. It’s what’s hurting my personal growth as a person. It’s just doing a whole lot of damage. I’ve looked at a lot of videos on the subject lately and how Theo explains his relationship with alcohol and why he chose to be sober makes me feel not so alone. Thank you so much Theo you’re awesome!

I heard someone say in an interview, I think it was on Joe Rogan, although I can't remember the guest, that every time you try to quit, the more likely you are to succeed that time. I think they were talking about smoking but it may be the same for drinking.

Every time I hear a great story about sobriety usually people relapse because addiction is a really really terrible thing. I struggle with it all the time. Theo could totally go bonkers overnight as could Peterson. But it’s good that they are happy for the time being. Addiction just sucks. Gosh I sound like such a downer, I guess because I struggle and sometimes I feel like I’m doing good and sometimes I feel like I’m not doing so good, but I have yet to meet Anyone in my personal life that has been addicted and didn’t struggle with getting out of it or they would get out of it for a moment and then sometimes relapse once in a while, I just never have met someone to just have an awakening. Maybe that’s just my reclusive life

@@colinbradfield72 I wonder how effective a psychedelic experience with magic mushrooms would be in your case. I've heard Peterson say that in a scientific study (on the effectiveness of psychedelics on smoking addiction), people were permanently cured of their addiction after just one experience, although I wonder how permanent that really was, they may have had relapses after the study.

She rarely uploads images of herself lightly dressed, and when she does it's at the beach/sunbathing, and I'm pretty sure Jordan doesn't like the photos for the reason you think, it's simply because she's his daughter, he doesn't have the perverse mindset you do clearly. I am so happy to see you back in the saddle, and there are so many issues and questions I would love to be able to bring up, but considering that only a couple of weeks ago you were still withdrawing (and coping with that extra mental anguish produced by the klonopin) I want to say, you look great. Not a lot of people realize how uncoordinated, awkward and difficult it is just to face people and talk - you feel so exposed and raw and everything seems so bright and harsh - but you look and sound amazing and I just want to thank you for being such an inspiration.
