I found another guy on ig who did this and he used 75% varsity and 15% chili red with 7 coats

Probably the only video I've found of this custom, a lot of the black toe Chicago mids though. Love the way you filmed everything, keep it up!

Nike is basically giving us the easiest colorway to customize to the original. Black toe J's is in a high wear spot of the shoes so I feel it could crack eventually.

Hmm hard to say actually! I would try mixing like a really small amount of the red & varsity red and painting a sheet of thick white paper then compare the colors to the shoe. I think fire red is a bit more vibrant than the regular red so I would do a bit of paint mixing and testing!

yeah mine came out too bright so i added some purple to the mix. I believe the color is "gym red" on that shoe. Kind of a hint of maroon. i felt it looked better after i added purple.

Hype.CollectorYT I didn’t have varsity red at the time so I only mixed fire red and purple. Probably 90 percent fire red and 10 percent purple I think. Then after 6 coats I used matte finisher with a small amount of duller like you did. I have a picture on my Instagram account: glockoma72! Check it out.

Hey Amir, Thanks for the feedback! I'll def consider doing that next time. It's a pretty straight forward custom, and I figured all that was needed was the paint ratio. That being said, I can totally see if someone wanted to replicate my exact results a step by step would've been helpful. Thanks again for the feedback!

Have you experimented with using Angelus’ Scarlet Red? It looks like that combined with the fire red may be the perfect combo?

HypeCollector finished up my custom and it turned out great! I mixed 50% Angelus Red, 35% Angelus Scarlet Red, and 15% Varsity red. The match is very very close I can’t tell a difference, if you want to see pics let me know!

Nice custom! My only question is, how did you measure the 60% and the 40%? Did you fill up the mixing container until 60% full and then added the other one? Really want to do this custom but that's my only worry.

yoo, I measured it using a high accuracy kitchen scale. I zeroed the scale with the container on it, then I measured it in grams. I put a link in the description to a scale very similar to the one I used! Let me know if you have any other questions! You can add more or less paints throughout when you are doing test strips to compare though! (always do test strips).

You needed a dope of black mixed with the red

Don't be! Watch some videos from Sneakerheadinthebay or maybe some vic almighty. There are some great resources out there! Also just apply thin coats and make sure you mask everything off! Make sure layers are dry before painting the next layer! thin even layers is the key to success. YOU GOT THIS.

Hello can you tell me the exact ratio for the matte finisher and the duller?

Im thinking of doing this, can I just use acetone to prepare the leather and matte finish from angelus after the custom, great vid finally someone who did these ones

this is the way!! I really don't like the white heel on this and I am not that into mids... If I got a pair I would gladly pay a customizer for a job like this...!!! still love my 2015 Chicago highs but this are great for people who cant really get a pair of those.

Those people should just buy Retro 2015 Chicago fakes. You can even buy a New Beginnings fake and customize it into a 1985 Chicago

Nice job on that repaint bro. You said 60varsity/40fire. Do you find the colors to match perfectly now that they’ve had time to really settle or would you recommend a bit more varsity, like maybe 65-70%?

Eyy, yeah I would still try 65-70% I think 65 would be the golden zone. Ive been wearing them like every day tho haha. It’s really negligible as is. When I did mine I did a white test strip, and it looked perfect at 60/40. I would highly recommend doing a test strip just in case something weird happens.

If i used regular red angelus paint and varsity red would it match the color?

Were the measurements a visual approximate with the ratios of paint or were you able to measure somehow, lol. It was hard trying to find the best blend of reds to get the chicago color, so this is appreciated. I'm still debating on going forward with the custom, because the white heel is growing on me

I used a kitchen scale and zeroed it with the mixing thing on it lol. 6g of versatility, and 4g of fire red. I wore them out today, and without the studio lights the color looked like a perfect match. Idk if this will help you make a decision BUT, I bought a pair to keep on ice with the white heel. I really like the white heel cause it makes me think of The Retro AJKO Chicago... BUT I would have done the custom even without an extra pair. I can't be dropping no $800 on a pair of chicagos right now... But hey, thanks for commenting & the sub! Means a lot! Hopefully I'll get better as I figure out how to better present/speak/shoot.

Hey they look great, red looked spot on to me. You notice bc you've stared at them long enough maybe lol. You ain't sellin em, they're just for personal wear. Jordan's closest way of making the OG but also not making them sell for a high price like the OG. Got mine on a restock, tried for 5 minutes and couldn't get any then Nike added another batch 5 minutes later that I was able to buy. Starting buying a second pair too but stopped it was a mid and i wasnt sure how itd resell. Kicking myself now. These are my first AJ1'S too! How comfy are they? I know its basic tech but just curious!

Yoo, thanks for actually reminding me to just enjoy the work I did and not get too caught up in the details lol.. To answer your question they are OK on the comfort level. You can wear them all day if you wanted to, but it's no where near like an airmax 90. It's more comfy than a chuck taylor / vans, but less comfy than an air max. I think its fairly similar to an Air force 1 if you own one of those, the toe box area is just a little less stiff than an AF1. I picked up another pair on that same restock! hahaha. I now have 3 of them... Kinda stupid hahaha

Hmm tough question! Honestly I would look through Instagram to see if there are any sneaker customizers in your area and reach out via DM. Customizing is a hobby and I’m sure a lot of them may have the color combo already...

Yo, that’s a good question. One I really don’t know the answer too haha. If you have some varsity red I would try to mix it with a bit of the chili red and then paint some on some white paper/card stock/cardboard and let it dry, then check the color matching. That’s what I did

yo just did the custom on these today and the homie is right use 85% varsity and 15% fire red and 2 to 3 drops of duller, I haven't used the matte yet but I would use 2 drops of duller with it

I wouldn’t recommend it personally. Someone in the comments mixed red with black and it didn’t go well from what they said lol. The Chicago red is a pretty hard red to match without the right mix. Good luck!

Such a tough call! but also good job on being able to cop for retail. I paid resell on both but just got a pair of the white heels this past restock... But if I had to choose I would definitely custom the White heels. Since the black toes are in a high wear area as, @Sean Crocket mentioned in a comment, they are more susceptible to cracking, but also the red outsole is more true! Let me know if you do decide to paint either!

HypeCollector painted my white heels but I didn’t do a good enough job taping down the soles so there’s some pain bleeding onto the rubber. What would be a good way to clean that up? Like acetone or rubbing alcohol and a napkin?

@@ws4835 I would try to get it large amounts off with a cotton swab and acetone. I wouldn't get too close to the upper with it unless it is cured and masked off. However, If it is just little splotchy spots on the rubber (just like little hits)I would be using an xacto knife and trying to gently scrape the paint off Or even a good toothpick. Just don't go digging INTO the rubber. just gently scrapping with a blade.

I used a high accuracy kitchen scale. I put the mixing container on and zeroed the scale. Then I carefully poured the paint to the jar. I put a link the description. It's not the exact one I used, but very similar.

Do you know anyone in Los Angeles who can custom my pair?

Will the paint rub off if it rains? I would be afraid to get them wet if that's the case.

Nope! Nike paints their shoes with leather paints just like the ones I used here, but at a mass production scale.

Haha don’t be! As long as you take your time, and be be extra diligent about masking you should be fine.

What’s your technique or advice for making 100% sure brushstrokes aren’t visible? Also did you use painters tape to section it off? And when you paint the stitching, any special considerations there?

Yoo great questions, - I apply pretty thin coats, and I use a heat gun to make sure they are dry before I apply another. This way it stays nice and smooth. I make sure to spread the paint out really well aswell. - yes! I used some 3m performance yellow masking tape amzn.to/2FugKxY I used it mainly because I have some from wrapping my car roof black lol. I found that its easier to cover an area and using your thumbnail and shoving the tape into the groves - I just painted right over the stitching- i just made sure that I wasn't pooling too much paint around that area, but since I was already doing very thin coats it wasn't an issue. let me know if you need me to clarify anything!

@@HypeCollector What is that red strip stuff that's used to mask off the midsole? I saw another shoe painter use it. Would it be easier to just use the 3M tape? I really don't want any red paint to get on the midsole. I also want it to reach all the way down accurately. Nervous lol!

my total came out to be $58.72 USD w/o shoes I think I paid 130-140 for em, but I got another pair on the restock. Hope that helps!

How long does the paint last?

Great question! If applied well I think it will last as long as any regular pair of factory painted Jordans. It is on a pretty low wear area so I doubt it will crack or anything.
