Joost's father died of cancer when he was 12 years old and within a year his mother also died of heart failure. His father had always told him that there are no boundaries. That the borders are made by the people. He always told his father that he would one day take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. They always watched it together. The song is a letter to his father, and at the end he wants to say that he is now moving on with his life, but that he has listened to his father. Europa means Europe in Dutch and papa means Father, so Europapa is a combination of those words. Joost is pronounced yoo with a st after it). Kind regards from the Netherlands😄

In therapy he burnt his story to help him cope with the trauma and move on. That's why in the end he burns everything. To close the chapter and move on

  • @R.Houtkoop

To my interpretation the song is about trauma healing. In the beginning he is looking at his house with (happy) memories. He goes working (suit). He can't heal. He goes traveling. He can't heal. He get's into anger (the hardcore bit with black spiky suit). He can't heal. In the end he is with he's younger self, his older self and himself in his house with memories. Burns it down. To be freed. Looks at it ... and will move on. Alone. From scratch.

Ich bin in Deutchland aber ich bin so allein = I'm in Germany but I'm so alone. Here's a clue about the real meaning of the song, followed by: "I'm in Italy but I still feel the pain. I'm on the run from myself, ask for help every day. I even paid people to help me but they didn't." Earlier in the song he sings: "I lost everything, except time". This means he has lost his parents at a young age. The music is happy and the clip looks very funny but the lyrics are sad. It doesn't matter where Joost goes or what he's eating, there is always the pain of missing his parents. Happy hardcore and "gabber" is typical Dutch style dance music. It is a way of mocking sad and stupid things, acting funny because the world expects young people to just be happy. But sometimes they are not happy and having troubled or pointless lives. They rather laugh about it and understand eachother. It's interesting to check out more about Joost Klein. I believe he's a clever and very special artist. Thank you for your reaction! Greetings from Westland, The Netherlands.

Papa means Daddy. He lost his father when he was twelve years old and his mother a year later. Papaoute means ‘ dad where are you’ . That’s why he dedicated this song to his parents. The video is made in the Netherlands, with a typical Dutch landscape and a windmill. The music is also typical Dutch ( gabber music) Europapa is about an orphan who travels throughout Europe (and beyond) to find himself and tell his story. At first, people don’t recognise him, but he goes on seizing any opportunity he gets to let himself be seen. Europapa is a tribute to his father. When bringing me up, he passed on to me an expansive view of the world.” Through the song he is saying there are no limits if you want to make your dreams come true and tell your story.

Follow your dreams and make the ones you love proud. Carry the memories with you but also their lessons. Joost is no joke he is a survivor right through the pain to party on the eurovision stage.

This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is gabber music - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, and the sub genre is called happy hardcore. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art. The lyrics have a lot of layers: Europe let’s come together! It’s now or never! I love you all! Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Visit my friends in France Or take a long walk to Vienna I want to leave the Netherlands But my passport is gone Fortunately don't need a visa To be with you So take the bus to Poland Or the train to Berlin I have no money for Paris So use my imagination Do you have a euro please Say "merci" and "please" I lost everything Except time So am travelling every day For the world is mine Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Eu-ro-pa! Ich bin in Deutschland Aber Ich bin so allein Io sono in Italia but still I feel pain Am running from myself Calling for "help!" all day long Yes I even give people money But there is no one to help me I don't need es-car-gots Don't need fish 'n chips Don't need paella, no I don't even really know what that is Turn on the radio I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai" Won't stop until they say "Yes, yes, he does that very well ey!" Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Eu-ro-pa! Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa…. Welcome in Europe boy! At the end of the day We are all human beings My father once told me It's a world without borders I miss you every day Is what I secretly whisper You see dad I listened to you Is what I secretly whisper You see dad I listened to you

The entire song (while sounding happy) actually has a depressive undertone, relating to the fact that people with severe depression might act very happy to put on a mask. Lines like "I lost everything, except for time", "I'm in Germany but I'm so alone, even when I'm in Italy I still feel the pain" underscoring the fact that since the death of his parents he's felt deep pain and lonelyness no matter where he goes. And the bit that says "I'm running from myself, all day long I call for help, I even give people money but there's nobody who really helps me", highlighting his battles with his depressions, PTSD and eating disorder, and that even doctors (the people he pays) can't really help him. So yeah, it's actually a very sad song in a very happy shell. Like Joost himself is very sad but puts up this happy mask for the world. And all this as a hyme to his parents, packed in a song that represents the unification of Europe, and the importance of it, especially now with the big red angry giant from the east lurking over us Western Europeans. It's not a great song, it's a masterpiece.

@@MrHaagsesjonny1 I didn't aim at the fire being symbolical for geopolitical fires. I know Joost himself said (during the interview with Arjan Lubach after the video presentation) that fire is symbolic for closing this grieving chapter of his life. I take the European unification message from the intro lines saying "Europe, let's come together, it's now or never". But eh, "nice try". 😉

If you search the personal history of Joost and then put this song and video together, with his story, you will find and understand all the layers: - both his parents died in the '90's ( the age of the hardcore etc) - he was just a child when that happened ( in an interview about this song and clip he told to never want to loose his inner child, that makes it funny, maybe weird for a lot) - his father said the world is without boundaries, but people create boundaries, so you can create the world - when he was young, every year he watched the eurovision song festival with his parents and shared his dream with his parents. Which was to also wanted to be there on stage, performing and representing the Netherlands - still every where he goes ( in Europe) it doesn't take away the loss and pain - the sudden end: from happy hardcore, dancing, smiling, hard!! To....a really abrupt silence, burning his fundament, his family, his house, his home and where he comes from....i think this represents how it was for him to suddenly loose his father...and a year later his mother...from partying and no worries at all....to : wtf...what is happening...a total silence...disbelief and destruction

I just discovered you I'm typically not into reaction videos because if you have seen people just totally miss the context they don't listen to the lyrics so they make up their own stuff about what the song and videos about or whatever. They find out they're making a mistake about the misconduct and they actually get defensive and I'm back up and say something like oh well I was talking about this so what I said still pertains I wasn't talking about the whole thing or whatever excuse they want to use. So you are the most honest reactor music I've ever seen on youtube. True you missed half of the meaning of the song but you admitted that and that is awesome in my book. This song is an oxymoron on purpose he makes it light and catchy and then your worm like you've never heard before on purpose- hiding the really deep and scarring meaning of the lyrics because that's the way people that get traumatized by an event in life that they can't get overdue. Whether they have managed to solve it within themselves or not those that have suffered the most trauma usually appear on the outside to be the happiest and most bubbly of people. And well he just likes music that gets people up and dancing anyway. By the way in many places across Europe the letter J is pronounced kind of like how we in the US pronounce Y. I've only watched this reaction video and your reaction to my all-time favorite-Marko but you do an awesome job! I love your reactions.

Most songs made by Joost are about mental problems. In this song he is a sort of president of his own crazy world and in the middle of the song he is rapping about he doesn't want paella, fish and chips and escargos. In my opinion in that part he desides he wants to heal from his mental problems/illness and in end the crazy world is burned to the ground and he came back to the real world.

I disagree. Reaction on not knowing the song beforehand gives a much more authentic reaction, and it will also show if a song is easy to understand. A nice thing to have, but definitely not mandatory, is a second video, after research has been done on artist and song and to see what was spot on, and what was different from the initial reaction.

Nah, that would take away the spontaneity of the reaction. The only thing you could argue about is to briefly read up on the song's meaning beforehand, that would prevent speculation. But even then, if you know a sad ending's coming it doesn't hit you as hard as it would otherwise. And even then, why would you suspect a Eurovision song is actually about something? It's usually about I love you, I hate you, we're good in bed, look at me I rock, life's good, I suck, life sucks. Don't need to read up on any of those 😆
