She originally wrote and recorded this song as a young woman. It's faster paced and ironic coming from someone so young. This version, from an older, wiser Joni, is just devastating. 😢 She painted the cover!

Do you have any idea what pain she had already been through when she wrote this. There is something about a difficult life that brings great maturity at a tender age.

She's done three versions of this song - the original in 1968, this one, and the new version she sang at this year's Grammy's. All three of them are masterpieces.

Vince Mendoza's arrangement is absolutely stunning which won a Grammy award in 2000 for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). I remember when this record came out and was stunned with emotion on first listen and still get emotional every time I hear it. This is musical artistry at its finest on every level.

I love this version. This is an older Joni Mitchell, singing with the wisdom of age and life experience. She did the first version when young and probably filled with hurt. You should listen to both….to see if you agree. Love your channel.💕💕💕

Hey Jamal. I've been a subscriber for over 5 years. Joni painted that album cover... She's an artist above all else... Glad you're still hanging in there. Joni is my my go to Female voice. I feel like she speaks for women everywhere as well as the rest of humanity to a certain extant. She's an old lady now, but I still love her like I did when I was a teen 50 years ago...

When we're young, our lives are full of hopes and dreams to be fulfilled but, as we age, our dreams don't always turn out the way we had hoped and we become cynical about life as our dreams become illusions. Yet, when we reminisce about life, it's the illusions that gave us hope and joy that we recall.

I had such a different image for what I thought it would be… married after college (I was engaged), lots of kids, white picket fence, full time mom hosting all the holiday functions, etc. Well, broke off engagement, went and got a Masters Degree from Harvard, was selected 40 Under 40 in a major city, and even outdid the goals I set for myself in my career. I never had kids (couldn’t), ended up living with someone til they passed away, and had the most charmed life I could ever imagine… I never saw any of it happening that way. But so thankful I appreciated the life I had vs the life I dreamed of and hoped for til I was in my 30s. I look back and wondered at times what would have happened if I never broke off engagement - he ended up having exactly the life HE wanted (found a wife who was happy to fall in line)- I made the right decision. I am alone now, my entire family has passed. But I still am thankful for the life I got (even the bad stuff so I could appreciate the good stuff).

It was so great to see Joni Mitchell in her first appearance on the Grammy Awards this year. After 50+ years of writing songs for others and herself, the Grammy performance was much more like this recording. Her younger voice was an octave higher and sounded almost childlike and playful at times, and angelic at times.

Hi Jamal, Beautiful reaction to this later in life version. It’s haunting. I’m more familiar with the younger Joni version. For your Christmas spirited song her “River” is closest but not quite such a song. Look for the song with the animation. It’s a gut punch song, in a good way. I’m going to ask how to make a request. It’s for a current young artist who is definitely “keeping great music alive.” She is 20 and singing the songs of my youth and doing them justice. I’m 68 and that’s saying something. In addition to her own natural voice she covers such artists as Carpenters, Olivia Newton-John, Joni, The Beatles, Heart, Carly Simon, Patsy Cline and on and on. On some of the covers she has a way of bringing forth the proper sound of the artist but not be mimicking. It just happens and is natural and beautiful. I’m going to list two “proof of concept” video Shorts and the song I’d like you to react to. The song is an audio only so the Short videos will give you the visual of the artist. Her name is Tori Holub (pronounced with soft vowels Hohluhb). The Shorts are self produced. The song was professionally produced. Her KZread presence is pale in comparison to “I” and TT. The second Short I’ll list has less than 4K views here but 1.1M on “I”. I’d like to make a donation to the channel for support. I see super thanks is available, I don’t see a rate for a request or do you not take requests? I don’t know. I’ve subscribed for awhile but just throw things in the comments. Your motto made me want to do something. Because it’s what she’s all about. Thanks! Joe Short 1. River (Joni, cover) kzread.infoa2w7XT02xsc?si=BNoVLiFZS-YtEE_1 Short 2. Goodbye To Love (Carpenters, cover) kzread.infolzGAhBT-zTg?si=irVob7Q8XgmriGpN Actual Song Request: Georgia On My Mind (Ray Charles classic, new arrangement, audio only) kzread.info/dash/bejne/doejrI-mos-XnaQ.htmlsi=Ar1A_t1y4uuXjkXi

I grew up loving this song sung by Judy Collins which was a big hit, then I discovered Joni Mitchell's album version and loved that for different reasons... And now... OMG... This extremely Soulful version is incredible. I've never heard it before. Now there are three versions of the song that I love... If you have time, check out the version song by Judy Collins and also Joni Mitchell's original album version.... And I'm glad to see that you've already heard Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi, but all of her earliest albums are worth listening to in their entirety...

Joni is a genius Composer and Painter. "I sing my sadness and paint my gladness." If you haven't, I hope you do a deep dive into her catalogue. BTW, members of the London Symphony Orchestra CRIED during the recording of this version, as did luminaries at the Grammys this year. Watch that, and watch the faces. As for "Christmas" music, her song "River" is a classic, even though it's not a noel.

The songs on this album are placed in an order to chart a relationship from start to finish and beyond. It's like a movie for the ears, and those orchestral arrangements just tug at everything you feel with. It's hard to think of another singer whose voice has morphed quite as much: from the high crystalline clarity of Young Joni in that yellow taxi to the badass swagger of the Shadows and Light tour, and on to the huskier and deeper, dark chocolate and caramel we hear now. While other singers have been grazing in the home paddock, Joni has always been off in the distance clearing fences, uncatchable. Why is she uncatchable? Because she came to us already inoculated with poetry and loaded with musical curiosity and moxie. I think the great jazz saxophonist, Wayne Shorter only ever picked up the phone and brought his soprano sax twice for "pop" recordings. One was Steely Dan and Aja; the other was Joni for this recording. And it was so well worth the trip. He takes us right to the end of Joni's infinity pool, and over the lip. I can tell they took you there, Jamel, oh yes I can. Mr Shorter saddles up again for the companion piece, A Case of You, with similar effect. Joni is not just a benchmark for singer-songwriters: she is an international treasure, and I love seeing people discover what the fuss is all about.

Joni's voice and song interpretation is amazing here. But a big shout out to the arranger, Vince Mendoza, too. For instance, I love how the rolling strings in the beginning never strongly imply the root note of the key of the song (keeping things ambiguously perfect for the lyrics) till the first chorus and it's just grabs your heart when you first hear and feel that. The whole thing is so good that I heard many of the session players from the orchestra were in tears after the recording. I usually am after hearing it myself.

The guitar original version 1969 was a faster tempo. I must say I love both of these, having not heard this version before. Use to sing this as a teenager in the 70's.

Need to also react to the original, recorded by Joni at a much younger age (from the Clouds album). This version is so sad and melancholy, recorded at a more mature age.

Have you not heard 'River'? It is not a sentimental Christmas song, however. 'River' is another gem beyond diamonds.
