One of my favourites. At this moment River is very apropos. 🇨🇦 I’m watching the snow accumulate outside in the middle of a blizzard, in Joni’s hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (where I live). Soon the pond across the street will be frozen enough for my kids to skate on. If there is ever a song that reminds me of home it is this one. It is about Joni’s breakup with Graham Nash from CSN. (You should definitely listen to Our House by CSN about Joni and Graham’s house in Laurel Canyon, and I bet you would recognize it). So thrilled you have found Joni. Jamel, you have a wonderful ear, a true appreciation of music, and a genuine ability to connect with your audience. Adore your channel!

This as you mentioned this maybe her most personal and emotional song. Yes many had thought that she and Graham would marry, but she weakened. She had been in a marriage which she described as a marriage of convenience since she had a daughter that she had to place in foster care in NY. Only 20 , broke and afraid to tell her parents about the child she married Chuck Mitchell a local NY folk singer in hopes to get her daughter back. Once they had married he decided that he didn’t want to raise another man’s child. She then put her daughter up for adoption .So this song is about memories of her childhood skating on the frozen rivers,Christmas season, being stuck in sunny LA and relationship with Graham. She in her heart wasn’t ready for marriage again. Her song “ Little Green “ is about her daughter that she was missing. River and all these songs are on “Blue “. Every song on the album is dark and emotional. She did reconnect with her daughter about 30 years later.

She is fearless! Not every artist can expose their hearts the way she does. I played this on guitar, and sang it a lot this last Christmas. She touches me way down deep. I love this brave lady!

Joni always sings from the heart. She does not hold back. Its why she's inspired millions of songwriters (and non-songwriters) around the world. Not only her words, but her chords inspire as well. You gotta watch her Shadows and Light concert. The full show is available on KZread.

I discovered Joni going through old records of my father's when I was in high school and then discovered contemporary jazz and blues while listening to musicians who covered her or played on her albums (Cassandra Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Diana Krall to name a few). One of the highlights of my life was to see her live in 2001 after she released the "Both Sides Now" album. Case of You and Blue are probably my favorite songs for the pure emotion, but there are many others and I love how she has evolved over time to the more modern Turbulent Indigo.
