Jonathan Turner: ‘Daniel Levy is the best entrepreneur I know’: Inside Tottenham's boardroom | Ep.27

This week we welcome Jonathan Turner to the show. Jonathan is a board member at Tottenham. We’ve covered ownership, management, players, but what happens in the boardroom of football's biggest clubs? Brought in by Daniel Levy, a lifelong fan with a background in investment and technology, Jonathan brings the breadth of experience and perspective that’s increasingly valuable in football.
How much of a meeting is focused on business strategy and how much is performance? How do you measure success? These are the questions as fans I wanted to understand, and Jonathan’s role at one of the biggest clubs in the country provides a fascinating insight into the behind the scenes world of football governance.
We’re delighted to welcome Jonathan Turner to the Business of Sport.
----------------------------------------------------
In Today’s Show We Discuss:
What goes on in the boardroom:
How much of the conversation in board meetings is short term performance related vs long term strategy?
A balance between good business and winning on the field can be hard to find. Why?
The new stadium was a major part of developing Spurs into a global football power. What opportunities have been created by having one of the best stadiums in the game?
Work in the community is a major part of the club’s social value. Why is this so important to teams?
Tottenham’s global brand
Value of the Premier League to an international audience and the brands it has been able to create out of its clubs
Having an international reach puts pressure on the schedule to travel and take games to places like Australia and South Korea.
It’s estimated Tottenham have over 200 million fans globally. How do clubs measure this and what do they do to maximise the experience of supporting the club for all fans?
Growth of the game in the US has provided incredible opportunity to add further value and audience to the League.
Jonathan’s role and motivations
A lifelong fan with a huge passion for football, how Daniel Levy asked him to join the board and be a part of the decision making setup.
How a background in investment and tech made him the perfect person to bring a new set of skills and perspectives to the board.
Football clubs, much like any business today, need to think like technology companies. What does this mean?
Building the right infrastructure behind the scenes is a key part of establishing success. How has the board recruited across performance and operations?

The hotel and other things around are also part of Spurs for those who are non football fans. Top 8 isn't find Spurs always want to finish 4th or higher as this brings in more money for the club. Spurs have gone for a team happy to finish 10 with a maybe a cup to a club that should be challenging for the title. The PL has 6 top clubs and Spurs are one of them all trying to get top spot. last 4 seasons its been Man City or Liverpool. other teams have gone close but couldn't win it. If Enic only wanted Spurs for money Spurs would still be at WHL. Enic would have given Spurs millions for players but then Enic would take all that money back witch means if they sold Spurs they would get all the money. I do understand where you’re coming from. Daniel has done a fantastic job of taking the club forward commercially. However, what’s the point of being the fourth richest club in England after, Man City, Man Utd, and Liverpool, and eighth in the world. We have overtaken Arsenal in terms of revenue and are just slightly lagging behind Liverpool and will probably overtake them in a couple of seasons. Yet, I cannot see a trophy dropping anytime soon. It’s really becoming beyond frustrating. Look at our personnel and honestly tell me that we can compete, we can’t. In the space of three seasons Arsenal have over taken us football-wise and have made significant key signings. We continue, year-in-year-out to rummage around bargain basement mid level transfers. Yes, you need to be prudent but heaven’s sake. Can we a least try to win something? Can we have a signing where people say, “Wow! Tottenham means business this season.” We’ve just brought Archie Gray from Leeds. A good prospect but we’re not going to win anything with him next season. He’s not ready yet. We need key signings now and Archie to build for the mid and long term. Plus players are volatile things that don’t always guarantee success, our recruitment has proven to be poor over the last few seasons. I think only Chelsea as a peer club have been worse (last season). However, even looking at the grumblings at Man Utd over the last 10 years. Their failure is still better than our success. Repeat, their failure is better than our success. They have still managed to win trophies. Yes, plural. Trophies. No one is saying that it’s easy, it’s not. But as my maths teacher used to say, “You must try harder.” COYS!

Arsenal were never limited due to the stadium post 2007, they simply couldn't compete financially with Abramovitch and City Group. It's the same with Tottenham. The stadium has never been the issue. The EPL environment is far more relevant.

Unfortunately Football is now a business and has been for a long time. While making money books also need to be balanced, otherwise we're back to the late 80's/ early 90's. Levy has made sure that no second coming of Irving Scholar can put us back in that situation. Additionally, when ENIC came in we were not financially fit and lucky to still be a PL club. We now compete in and around the top 4 regularly. A lot of money gets spent on the team. Pochettino spent almost 500m, Mourinho spent over 100m, Conte also. We have a recruitment team and they've improved over the last few years. The Poch years had us ahead of the plan, but it is all moving in the right direction and can only be good for the club.

Well, you're talking like a fan who only sees the pitch and the team. But there's more to a club than just on the pit h. Did Spurs deliberately go out to be trophyless? No. Do you need money to compete? Yes. Then how do you get the money? Man City and Chelsea had sugar daddies. Spurs would need a self funding business. To generate money, you need to think beyond the normal TV rights. Gate recipes, etc. Spurs had to increase capacity as well as modernise the stadium for the next 100 years. They've done fantastically well with infrastructure, and thst should pay in a long run for tip talents on the pitch. Arsenal couldn't buy decent players for almost 20 years... Spurs can still compete reasonably well, about 5 years after opening an expensive stadium. You should also understand that Spurs is a public quoted company... Their business must be above board.... I always say that if all the clubs in the EPL spend £1b on players, only one can win the league, and some will be relegated... So spending money must be done in a sensible manner, or you're in for a big fall

A lapdog speaks for the Spurs Investment Inc. The company is building assets the whole time, the idea is the following; they pretend to be interested in a team, but the team generates income, the income creates a new stadium, a hotel, training grounds, karting track, as well as huge amounts of merchandise, lots of concerts which have been extended to 30 extra per year, now they are up amongst the very highest generators of income. Now this is all being done with the the loyalty of fans who actually believe they are supporting a team, but that is fake; the team generates income, that is invested again and again for the benefit of two people, and not for the team, it means we shall have the 'milk cow' generating more and more income to create more and more wealth. It's disgusting abuse of fans' loyalty, the lapdog is not sharp enough to understand this.

Understand, you are also a business, which is what is being discussed. Football Clubs, the same as every other business will eventually be digitised and Tokenised. That will include realestate.

@@MrDitkovich most managers don't get all their 1st choice, does that mean none are backed? Arteta wanted the Ukrainian player who went to Chelsea and had to accept trossard, means he isn't backed?

@@dutchgrass i still dont think mourinho and conte were fully backed. they didnt have signings to push them on to compete. they were given rodon, spence. conte even said spence was a club signing and didnt want him. same with pochettino and jack clarke. he didnt want him, clarke was a club signing

@@jordanbeckford7044no, I am a fan that wants us to win but is also aware the football landscape of the last 20 years with the likes of Chelsea and City making winning something harder than ever. We are the 5th/6th highest turnover club, some way off the top ones therefore expecting us to win and classifying not doing so as failure & worst run club is just foolish & makes you look like a child.
