To everyone who's criticizing this speech, he didn't expect to win. And when he did win, he was nervous. He thanked those who came to his head, probably just had a vague idea of who he'd thank if he did win, but when he got up there, he didn't know how to say it, especially since he wanted to think not just the actors, but the people behind the film and the studio, which was going through bankruptcy, so he wanted to say something about them, and then to mention the new directors that came onto the seen just recently. As a result he says "Uh... um.... uh... oh..." a lot. He said a lot more than he anticipated as he didn't think he'd win.

One of the few people at Disney was Miss Elaine Wilkes. And joining her were the real life Grammy winning married couple Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo who wrote the best song from October 1982: "Get Nervous" as well as the real life husband and wife married couple Philip Charles MacKenzie and Alison MacKenzie who wrote some books about giving people need a big break from all of those situations. For example, take a break from the US to live in Italy for years to come. That's what Alison MacKenzie and her son, Wil Harris did leave the US and enjoy traveling to Italy in their spare time like playing classical orchestras and instruments from around the world.

R.I.P. Jonathan Demme.
We still love you, Jonny! :)
What an AMAZING year for directing! John Singleton, Oliver Stone, Ridley Scott, and of course, the best of them all, Jonathan Demme (I'm not familiar with Barry Levinson, but I'm sure he's great). So outstanding!

Barry Levinson directed the 1988 film "Rainman" with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise if you've ever heard of it

@@turtletank4784 We did because he won a 1989 best directing Oscar.
Ted Levine should have been nominated for Oscar as best supporting actor.

I agree but it would be too controversial to the academy

Easily the most sincere and one of the warmest speeches I ever saw. Genuine. God bless him.Navid
John Singleton deserves a Oscar for making and direct the best movie ever.RIP John Singleton.
Rest In peace Jonathan Demme Thank You For An Instant Classic.
Rest in Peace Mr. Demme.
R.I.P. Jonathan Demme... and now John Singleton
What a great year that was for directors! All excellent masters of their trade in 1991.
Mr. Demme was a fine director. He's so nervous and stuttering here. Always write a speech!

He knew he wasn’t supposed to win. That’s why he didn’t write one.
Just found out what happened.. such a shame he was amazing at what he did. RIP
Rest in Peace, JD.
RIP. Great Director.
They don't give this much time for acceptance speech nowadays, do they?

Nope they only give you 60 seconds, unless you want to make political statements a virtue signaling, in which case you get all the time you need.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Jonathan Demme
I have been waiting for this video my whole life. Thank you Academy ^_^
R.I.P Jonathan Demme
I absolutely love that they play the movies theme song when they win!
Tak Fuji Cinematography on SOTL is truly remarkable. *A masterclass in subjective camera*
The voice of Kevin is so cool
Descanse em Paz grande diretor.
The fact that he mentioned Ted Levine (whose remarkable performance as Buffalo Bill always gets overshadowed by Anthony's) and Brooke Smith (who played Catherine Martin and was NOT an actress) shows just the amount of respect and admiration he had for his co workers. He left us too early. RIP mr. Demme, who made us love the word "lamb" a little more.
Thank you Mr. Demme for your work
Agreed. Rachel Getting Married was absolutely wonderful. One of my all-time favorite American family dramas. Anne Hathaway deserved the Oscar,. Rosemarie Dewitt, Debra Winger ( nice comeback role ) and Bill Irwin deserved Oscar nominations.
RIP Johnathon demme (1944-2017)
To one of the greatest in film making, Jonathan Demme greatest strength is capturing the personalities of their characters and gave them body and soul. I frankly don't remember any directors who had this type of skill that could pull the right strings whether being fear or sorrow. Thank you John...you are still one of my favorite directors from the 20th century. We shall meet again. RIP
Give him a break. He just won the best possible award imaginable in his career. If you just won an Oscar, you'd be nervous too.

I think that year was very very close, happy that SILENCE won all BIG 5.
Great group of nominees
R.I.P JONATHAN demme

Demme was a great director. He did good in Something Wild and Married to the Mob as well. Not just Silence of the Lambs or Philadelphia but The Manchurian Candidate as well
What an amazing director. I can't think of a movie he's made that I don't love in some way. Even when he fumbled, his love of movies was right there onscreen.
so awkward and awesome and thorough and real!!
R.I.P such a master
Ted Levine should been nominated!!!
Impressive group this year.
One of the best
Damn that’s a lot of great movies that year
RIP Jonathan Demme who passed away aged 73 today after Complications from esophageal cancer and heart disease. RIP Legend! 😢😢😢📽️🎞️🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 = 👺🐏🐑
R.I.P
RIP it’s sad this doesn’t have more views
No Cpostner was the winning director for 90 (Dances With Wolves) and since he is also a star he presented the directing award.
The IMDB trivia page said John Singleton looked visibly angry when he lost, but it really doesn't look that way. It looks like he's giving him the "Ada-boy!" as they announced Jonathan Demme.
R.I.P. Jonathan :'(
I know the spotlight was on Hopkins and Foster for Silence of the Lambs, but Ted Levine was amazing!
He made the perfect film!
Kevin Costner received his nominations for Dances With Wolves less than a week before The Silence of the Lambs was released. There hasn't been a Best Picture winner since to have been released that early
There were some great nominees in this year for Best Director. After seeing "Silence..." take the Oscar for Best Actress, Actor, (and later Picture); there was no doubt that it was going to win Best Director.
