What an awkwardly sweet moment, when Herzog unexpectedly compliments Demme, and the latter's cheeks redden immediately. Such a great moment for cinema

+Matthew Rocca IMHO I don't think you can even compare the two. Demme's movies are ridiculous contrivances, like B movies, to me, he's not even in the same league as Herzog.

jude999: Well to be fair, I've only seen one of each of their films in its entirety: Herzog's "Nosferatu" and Demme's "Silence of the Lambs". In my opinion, both films are equals in their artistry, iconic visuals, complex performances, and the sublime horror and beauty they evoke. However I would have to see more of each directors' work to properly compare them.

Do you like Paul Thomas Anderson's work? If you do, know that Demme was his biggest influence and hero. Also; i would not call movies like Stop Making Sernse, Swimming to Cambodia, Melvin and Howard, Something Wild, Silence of the Lambs, B Movies. Yes, he is no Herzog. But who is (other then Herzog himself)...

There's a lot of hate for Demme here, what gives? I mean of course he isn't in the same league as Herzog, who is one of the greatest of all time, but still, Demme is a very accomplished and respectable film maker.

It's incredible to see these magnificent directors talk about cinema, and how their careers have progressed through their films. I'm a fan of Herzog's movies, in fact, during Pandemic, my mom, and I were watching Aguirre the wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo, and Cobra Verde, starring Klaus Kinski who was important for Herzog's career as a filmmaker. Two of them made a great friendship, although they were about to kill each other, while shooting Aguirre the wrath of God.

myself as a starting out filmmaker, I would never have thought of bragging on my own films. It's very easy to think that when you see these great directors talking about how great this or that film of their own was, that they are expressing braggaddoccio. But then you realize how large of a production a film is, how big of a team, and in reality is giving credit where credit is due and praising his performers and the members of his crew for the magnificent job *they did on the piece they made together. That's an essential part of being a director-- is demanding exactly the very best, and then praising your team when they give it to you.

What bugs me about him (which has nothing to do with Werner by the way) are the sheer number of deadbeats on Twitter who've pretended to be him for years, which is thankfully now coming to an end (because they now all have to label themselves as parodies).

+birddogfreemann i think you're mistaken... what demme is doing is providing the guiding for the herzog monologue and he does it very well... its significant because it comes from an outside listener, meaning someone more close to the view of the audience who is at the same time well versed in herzogs filmography... he never takes over the interview which is a mark of a great of interviewer... also notice the dynamic questioning... for example the part about the teacher that made him sing, herzog cuts in with that story right after demme wanted to ask something that came out of the previous dialog, he instead lets him and the instantly questions him about that.. and there are numerous accounts of it... for me at least that is some clever interviewing

At the very least, in a brief, one to two sentence statement, you could justify your comment, Juan. It is not entirely clear which comment was "stupid" nor do you substantiate it. Unlike you, svenlittlecross has enough intelligence to construct a well-thought response to my comment. But maybe this is asking too much from you. Perhaps, you can define and defend "stupid" within the context of Jonathan Demme and/or Werner Herzog. You've arrived late to the party, Juan. Are you a Herzog fan? Or what? I still maintain Jonathan Demme is unnecessary. Even in the first brief moments, Herzog needs to contextualize why Jonathan Demme is reading a letter by Roger Ebert. Did we really need Demme to read a letter by Ebert about Herzog?! Demme is NOT in Herzog's class of film makers.
