When I was in high school I hid my programming hobby from my friends. After high school I worked in a restaurant and did 2-3 hours coding after work each day. Never set foot in a computer science classroom and I’m glad I didn’t. In college took literature, history, foreign language, and economics classes along with math, physics, and chemistry.

As someone who is in a CS degree right now in college, Computer science is more about theory than actually being told "how to program". In fact it irks me a bit that I don't get to program more, but that's what that specific degree is afterall. Guess he would known this if he didn't drop out. Though, he didn't say which degree he almost finished and also maybe Berkely is different than my school. Physics or computer science? Also, you can be conscious of institutionalism and still use the institution to better yourself. A lot of college is self learning anyway. You're more there for the curriculum and the credibility you get from completing a degree and additionally the resources you have for getting help and networking with others. Anyone who is incredibly self motivated can be even more successful at college, although unfortunately in the states it costs you a lot of money unless you have some sort of financial aid that covers it.

Agreed, although it's a little unintuitive. The most value you get out of college is shit you do one your own, make connections, actually learn and try new skills, aka shit effectively unrelated to the actual piece of paper you're working towards.

Your attitude is the only thing keeping those institutions powerful though. That's the problem. At one point in time, a university was a bastion for intellectuals (some of them), but what it is now in America ... the only thing that keeps them standing is a large amount of people saying "Yeah but it's still good just to get the credibility" because they don't know how to get that credibility through other means. This is different for fields like medicine, of course, but by and large you must understand what I'm saying

@@rmdashrfv "This is different for fields like medicine" is that really so ? when I'm looking for a doctor, I almost always only look for his past experience and ignore what university he went, I don't even care, they're all the same. if you know how to do the job and your past experience is that of success, that's what matters. having a degree is the bare minimum and gives no credibility at all

Exactly! They don't have any real lead questions to the things he's saying, they just kind giggle over and over..? I wish they would have asked him what was the byproduct of his depression in college.
