    The Iron Throne was the reason for so much intrugue betrayal and murder which made everyone in the realm suffer over the decades. With it melted down and no royal family, Westeros had to come up with something different in choosing a ruler without the hassles of a potential struggle of succession. Jon leaving Westeros and Castle Black for good is probably the best case scenario for him.

    The ending of Jon Snow, is very similar to many of my brethren Vietnam war veterans. The did what they did, they fought who they fought, and when they came home they were hated by those they fought to protect from the spread of communism. So they bellied up a whole bunch of 'screw you', found a hole in the wall to live out their lives, somewhere across the great expanse of the continental United States, and have done so since then.

So he ignored the castle and went with the people who loved him as an equal, listened out of respect and wanted nothing more than to be left alone. Bran betrayed everyone as he said, he basically came to be king. Sansa got to be a Wueen which was all she wanted. Arya got to go travelling. Jon, betrayed by almost everyone, got freedom. He wasn’t driven by money or power. He just wanted peace.

    I noticed something in the final montage of the finale where Jon, Sansa and Arya are moving on to the next step in their journey that I havent seen anyone else bring up. During his time as King in the North it always seemed that Sansa was at odds with Jon - no moment more apparent then when she questioned him in front of everyone about his mercy to house Umber and house Karstark. She had learned from Cersei that mercy was weak (something that Dany used as justification for what she was going to do to Kings Landing - she didnt want Cersei proving her weak and in effect fell into the same foolish belief as Cersei that mercy is weakness). Time and time again Jon displayed mercy to those who wronged him. Especially Sansa, who in effect betrayed him more than once (keeping the Knights of the Vale arrival to herself and then sharing his secret after she said she would not) and both times he subverted her expectation and forgave her - showed her the mercy she was willing to refuse others. I was pleased at the end of that montage as Sansa took her seat on the Northern Throne to hear a familiar voice yell out, "The Queen in the North!" --- Lord Glover!!! He abandoned them for the Long Night and even the Last War and Sansa could have punished him severely for that, but she learned from Jon's leadership - to grant mercy. Dany couldn't grant mercy either - in many ways she saw it as a victory for Cersei if she did, - but even in the end Jon granted her a small mercy - a quick death - where many people in the show would respond with vengeance for what she had done. Yes, the way he led always put him at risk for betrayal - his own murder came from him doing what was right for life to continue. Some people call that dumb - i think it is honorable and worth living like - imagine if everyone lived as sacrificially as Jon. The world would be a better place. Jon displayed many Christlike attributes - I suppose that is a big reason he was my favorite character. This was a tragedy - not bad writing or character assassination. I was left both sorrowful at the cost of his sacrifice for everyone and inspired. Great ending and great video!!!!!! (my favorite parallel and contrast of Ygritte's last words "you know nothing, Jon Snow" and Dany's "you know what is right - you have always known" quite compelling and poetic. Haven't figured out what he actually knows yet though LOL) hope someone read all of this lol thoughts welcome

    He was the only pure hearted character in a world full of politicians. Sansa learned so much politics from Cersei and Littlefinger and always used it against Dany and Jon as well, she was also jealous when Jon became King in the North. People sometimes call Jon Dumb by repeating the joke like "You know nothing Jon Snow" but for me he was always there, did what needed to be done. I only wanted him to be King because the world got rid off Lannisters and all the Targaryens except him so there are Starks left I'm considering big houses so a political minded character isn't really needed to be King. A pure hearted man can lead the World to a much better place, his Targaryen reveals were always Epic so it would make the ending much better. Some people say that it's good ending for him because he felt loved there and I respect their opinion but such reveals and such an epic journey for a character just for him to live from where he started clearly feels empty to me since he's my by far the Favourite Character. But now it has ended, so I'm trying my level best to move on 😔

    While you tried to put some thought into it I'll say it was still character assassination. A Dany showing no mercy would've gone right at Cersei to punish her, not ignored her to supposedly chase down random people on the street. Daenerys tries to protect or avoid harming the innocents, she is quite comfortable with punishing those who she thinks are guilty. Season 8 tried to portray a total reverse of that which is utterly character breaking in 2 different ways at once and character assassination. I have a guess as to why. That D and D wrecked a perfectly good tv series and broke with multiple characters actual characters isn't hard to see. And they likely did it just for shock value and to failingly try to excuse scenes that shouldn't have happened-they likely changed season 8 from wildfire burning King's Landing to dragon fire because they wanted the multiple scenes from episode six of season 8 even though they realized those scenes shouldn't happen. 1. Yes, commentary from computer effects people is evidence that a change was made and an earlier plan for season 8 was for most of King's Landing to burn due to wildfire, they were told the plan then later told to change the scenes to "not wildfire". Link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZaV1pdKkZNu9eso.html This is just 1 bit of evidence wildfire was the earlier intended way King's Landing would burn, there are other bits but I think this is important because it shows someone was directly told to change their part of making season 8. 2. That means Jon would not have agreed to assassinate Dany as a massive wildfire disaster was never what she wanted. 3. And if the start of season 8's episode six did play out then the ending wouldn't have happened. A Grey Worm already killing prisoners would've killed Jon and Tyrion day 1, not waiting for a council to assemble that he doesn't take orders from anyway. 4. And if a council was formed to pick a new king then both Jon and Gendry have better claims to the crown so their names would have been discussed first, not Bran's. 5. If Tyrion's brain was functioning Bran telling him "Why do you think I came all this way?" would've been a clue to Tyrion that Bran either planned all this and is a mass murderer including of Tyrion's brother or (if one doesn't think Bran is quietly being a puppet master) it would still let Tyrion know Bran foresaw one of the worst disasters to hit Westeros and let it happen just so he could be king meaning Bran is utterly useless. Either way Tyrion would probably go scratch that Bran the Broken idea and say someone else should be king (and if the former is true Tyrion may try to think of a way to kill Bran as both revenge and to rid Westeros of him). So I figure D and D were trying to go for scenes they had no good excuse for having as a way to quickly wrap things up.

  • @pplr1

    @pplr1

    3 жыл бұрын

    Just to add I think you tried to have a worthwhile thought related to mercy. But I suspect you put more thought into things than D and D did. And even if D and D intended to show mercy that they may have made Bran a manipulative mass murder in order to be king says much-either they are inept or don't really understand how to portray mercy.

    Jon's ending was a gift from Bran. Bran knew all that Jon had done. Beyond the Wall (or being in the Night's Watch at the Wall) is a punishment to most Westerosi. To the Unsullied and the Dothraki, that might as well have been a living Hell as neither of those groups would want anything to do with the North even if Sansa isn't sitting on the new throne of the North. Bran used some political brinksmanship to allow the North to be a separate kingdom which protects his family even if he's not really Brandon Stark any more. He still has his own memories so Bran is still in the 3ER. Bran knows that beyond the Wall is where Jon has been away from being a Stark and just being Jon.

  • @pplr1

    @pplr1

    3 жыл бұрын

    Or Bran just wanted to get Jon out of the way on Bran's march to the crown. That better explains why Bran pushed Jon's linage when it could complicate Jon's life but then keeps quiet about it when who should be king is discussed. Bran uses Jon's linage as a tool for his own powergrab. Plus Bran wanted Jon gone without making it obvious to Arya that this and the burning of King's Landing was Bran's plan all along. Bran couldn't have Jon killed because that would make Arya mad at him (we already saw Arya's response to that idea when Yara brought it up out of the idea that it was "justice"). So Bran needed a way to get Jon out of the picture with his life ruined (Jon being emotionally broken) and disinherited but without setting off Arya. So exile it was. Of course for this situation to play out some scenes that shouldn't exist had to occur that break characters and may have required changing season 8 from the earlier intended story. Yes there is evidence season 8 was changed from what the earlier plans were. Arguably for added shock value but also to get scenes that shouldn't exist. Consider these points.: 1. Yes, commentary from computer effects people is evidence that a change was made and an earlier plan for season 8 was for most of King's Landing to burn due to wildfire, they were told the plan then later told to change the scenes to "not wildfire". Link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZaV1pdKkZNu9eso.html This is just 1 bit of evidence wildfire was the earlier intended way King's Landing would burn, there are other bits but I think this is important because it shows someone was directly told to change their part of making season 8. 2. Jon being a Targaryen, changed his relationship with Danerys, in season 8 episode 4, Danerys lost Jorah, becoming suspicious of Tyrion, her inability to lean on her relationship with Jon becomes the breaking point, making her toward vengeful and paranoid. You can see the little details, such as in S8E6, when Arya warned Jon that he will always be a threat to her. And Tyrion told Jon during captivity, "why did you think Sansa told me about your birth". There is other dynamic going on in the story. Unfortunately, Season 8 ended too soon without properly presenting these complex relationship as the screen writer has intended. To bring it back, his identity matter as it destroyed his relationship with Danerys, becomes something that Sansa used to disrupt Danery's path to become the Queen of the 7 kingdoms and Varys and Tyrion's vision of an even better ruler than Danery's. Just my thoughts.

    I think the ending perfectly sets up a sequel where the North and Highgarden (ruled by Redwyne, who deposes Bron’s heir) over who rules Westeros, the North wanting to put a Tully or an Aryn (their allies by blood of Sansa) or even a Stark on the throne to keep the 6 kingdoms under their influence, whilst Highgarden uses it’s power over the kingdom’s agricultural resources to extort votes, Jon’s descendant then arrives in the north after Sansa’s descendant dies without an heir, leading to a war where the north tries to reunite with the south in a personal union under the king in the north, whilst the south (Highgarden) fights to keep the south under their control, with help from Dorne and the Stormlands

Jon finds happiness with Val and the Wildlings, Sansa ends up taking a wildling as husband as well so she can pass on the Stark name to her children as the Wildlings don't care about surnames like everyone else. Arya ends up being the one who would have to kill Lady Stoneheart so her mother can finally be at peace, and she ends up leading the Brotherhood without Banners and take overruling the Riverlands in her own way, much like her wolf Nymeria. Bran ends up as the next Bloodraven and Jon would probably have to be the one to kill him. Daenerys and FAegon will probably end up coming head to head in the books.

    I think the show runners were so obsessed with big twists and subverting expectations that they lost sight of what can make a story more memorable and impactful, even if the obvious choice is for John to fight and kill the night king, it’s still the right one. It always bothered me that Arya had nothing to do with the white walkers the entire show and then she is the one to defeat them. Her character would have been better served saving Sandor from the mountain or something, that would be a subversion since she said she wanted to kill sandor, only winding up saving him instead. And it would make more sense in her story arc. It makes me wonder if GRRM told the show runners what the book ending was gonna be and made them promise to do something different to not spoil to much.

The producers knew Jamie killing cersi was obvious but him dying in her arms shows his character arc was for nothing

    That would be one of the very few redeeming things Sansafinger could do after using the situation to grab Jon's lands. But it could also just be that Sansafinger, like Bran, didn't want Jon hanging around because his linage was a threat to both of their crowns. Plus the Northern nobles elected Jon but not Sansafinger-making him doubly a threat to her if he stayed and she betrays enough people that there is a backlash. This is quite possible since Sansafinger in season 8 is an oathbreaker already-directly to Jon himself but also part of undermining an alliance he made to any ally that helped save the North and greater Westeros.

Someone has to go look and Jon Snow would be the first to volunteer. Either as First Ranger of the Night's Watch, or on his own. Once he had his answers, he might well settle north of The Wall. I take Jon's lineage as this- a secret as Ned feared Robert having him killed. Ned unlike some of his kids was actually good at keeping secrets. Just a necessity. The importance of his lineage- a song of ice and fire. Jon is the balance in this story. He fights to save the world from ice (the night king) and from fire (Dany). Readers/watchers just focused on the ice part ignoring how a land of eternal summer would be just as devastating as one of eternal ice. In the end Dany had Drogon as her only protection and that dragon trusted Jon. I see his ending as a happy one. The wall is for cripples, bastards and broken things- that's not him anymore. The wildlings love him and they have a decent shot of being a people of mercy. They witnessed the undead more than westeros. This could be a time to move forward and work together. I also think it'll be an end to the years of winter and summer making the land less hostile. He may not ever be crowned but he's the king beyond the wall

    Jon's heritage didn't amount to anything? It was the catalyst to the entire story and to its ending. Him being a secret Targaryen arguably destroys Dany's belief in her own destiny. She now knows that Jon has a valid claim and all the problems come from there. It is not like in traditional fantasy stories where being a secret heir to a kingdom is somehow a problem solver but rather it creates problems and issues between the characters and that's why it's great.

    I don't understand why everyone is suddenly calling Daenerys "Evil" when her actions during the latter half of season 8 were perfectly justifiable, when you look at everything that happened to her up to that point. First of all, she spent six seasons just surviving in Essos, being "sold like a brood Mare, chained and whipped, raped and defiled," even choosing NOT to travel to Westeros to take King's Landing because she had realized that she hadn't even been a successful Queen in Meereen. During the sixth season she had a history with the Dothraki to atone for, and ended up winning over them all, after being treated as a slave by the Khal's, before returning triumphantly to Meereen to take control back from the Slavers once again. By the time she had set sail for Westeros, she had Tyrion as her hand, an Army of Unsullied, a Dothraki Horde, a fleet of ships, and three full grown Dragons. But, probably most importantly, she had secured the alliances of the Kingdom of Dorne, Highgarden, and the Iron Islands. All of which would accompany her at Dragonstone to prepare for her campaign to overthrow Cersei, and along comes some "King of the North" character begging for her help against an Army of dead people led by Ice Zombies. When she finally reluctantly agreed, she ended up losing almost everything, and by the time she had returned to Dragonstone, she had lost two of her three Dragons, her Dornish and Highgarden Allies, and virtually her entire Horde of Dothraki Screamers. And, that was BEFORE learning her new boyfriend was really her nephew, who had a more legitimate claim to the Throne, (whether he wanted it or not,) and his sisters plans behind her back with her own Hand Tyrion to depose her in favor of him. And then she watched a disgusting Pirate A-hole kill one of her two remaining Dragons and Cersei order her Queensguard "The Mountain" to behead her best friend and advisor Missandei. By the time she was ready to actually attack the Capitol, she had essentially lost almost everything she had gained, over the course of one season, it's really difficult to blame her for saying "Screw It!!" there, at the end lol I mean, it's far MORE inexplicable that anyone really expected her to maintain some sense of benevolence at ALL, after what she's been through! For real! What do people expect?!? 🤣 ANYBODY would go a little "Mad Queen," after enduring the repeated loss of everything she worked so long and hard to gain. When taken in its totality, in context, it's perfectly understandable her burning King's Landing to the ground, I submit. Just one thought of how she must have felt seeing Missandei being killed, right in front of her, just after her Dragon was literally speared out of the sky, again. And, that's only one episode after being betrayed by Winterfell, after sacrificing her entire Horde of Dothraki to protect them, it's really no WONDER she burned everything to the ground! A person can only take SO much abuse, before they're delivering a little abuse of their own back, in response. Anybody who was disappointed clearly didn't take any of these things into account, and had unreasonable, unrealistic expectations to begin with. Whatever the outcome with Jon or Arya, Sansa, or Bran. Whatever the outcome with Jaime and Cersei, the Mountain and the Hound. What happened with Daenerys is PERFECTLY justified, by any measure or standards. That much is CLEAR. 👍

    I’m normally against retconning anything, however, this ending is so bad that I’d be happy for HBO to do Season Nine and resurrect Daenerys when Drogon brings her to the red priestess Daenerys met a few seasons ago and for Jon to discover the army of the dead is somehow still around and when the Night King smashed to pieces he simply transferred his essence into Bran and now rules the seven kingdoms.

    Don't try to give it a silver lining. Season 8 was character breaking and damages for multiple characters. We should be able to see season 8 as the nonsense it is. As an arguable insult to both Jon and Dany he left her alone and wouldn't comfort her when she supposedly needed it in order not to go crazy. Like I said, nonsense and should be seen as such. I know you are trying to give season 8 a friendly spin but it is unworthy of your efforts.

    @@SerbAtheist So you prefer slavery then? The quote ''They can live in my new world or die in the old world'' is referring to slavery and that Daenerys is trying to end it. Also I doubt an actual "tyrant" would make Meereen a democracy in season six like Daenerys did. And that was after freeing slaves and setting some level of rights that individuals had. Yes it is out of character to ignore Cersei Lannister in order to go after random people on the street-that is what is portrayed in the nonsensical burning of King's Landing. If the situation was made to be in character then Dany may go for Cersei and ignore the random people on the street-remember the actual Daenerys didn't kill the slaves for things the slave masters did. It is also utterly ridiculous and illogical for most anyone in the situation portrayed to ignore Cersei to go after random people on the street. Bran is not wisdom. He is indifference and selfishness made flesh. He doesn't care if people live or die-including after he is king and they are his people. In addition to that there is evidence in season 8 that Bran arranged the burning of King's Landing making him a mass murderer. Now such evidence may exist simply because of how inept the writers are but you are the one who said season 8 is great or "awesome". That is what the details in it point to. One other thing about wisdom. If it ever does get personified I wouldn't expect it to be in the fantasy version of 1984's Big Brother. On a side note that is some heavy duty reinforcement to The Wheel. "Foaming at the mouth that a character didn't receive as cruel of a death as you imagined she deserved." So you wanted Cersei to have a happy ending? Ok then. "Combing over every little thing D&D ever said just so you could pile on them" Maybe if what D and D said wasn't ridiculous and self-contradicting it wouldn't be meme worthy. "Did I miss anything?" Yes. Judging from what you said just now you missed a great deal. One of the themes that could be taken from season 8 is that things would be fine if the serfs just accepted their place and let their betters-who are only their betters due to bloodlines or have good connections to people with notable bloodlines-run everything without the serfs' well being in mind. Not exactly the most valuable message. I'm sure one of the themes about women was also less than ideal. This being to to rule a woman has to be dishonest, dishonorable, strip herself of being concerned for others, and then ask the correct male figure for a kingdom please was also not the most valuable message. Gotta love the image where everyone who isn't white is some kinda Nazi-because that is just such a good image to keep in mind if in the real world any group of people was ever disrespected or distrusted for their skin color or ethnic group. Then there is the whole disgraceful speech that attempts to put real world victims of the Nazis in similar status as rapists and child killers (the "evil men"). I'm sure there are other themes people drew from season 8 that are just as negative. I think I already managed to hit on the most cynical.. That those who want to help others or are trying to change the world to be more positive are the bad guys. Thus people should just embrace their overlords no matter how corrupt they are and how little they care for their own people. What a message to give to the world..

    I don't have a problem with Jon going 'beyond the wall' if it was *his choice*. What angers me is that he was *banished* as punishment after all he did to save everyone. I would rather have seen it play out like this - he kills the mad cow, is acknowledged as the rightful heir to the throne, is lauded by all for his deeds but *declines* (or abdicates) so that he can finally live the life he wants. I think the character deserved that. And I think his fans deserved that sort of pay-off too.

    You’re taking the word banished too literally. Bran banishing Jon was just a formality. Greyworm left and took the unsullied and dothraki with him. Not many people would care if Jon came back, and greyworm would never know. Bran also has no jurisdiction over the nights watch anymore, since it’s in the north, which is ruled by Sansa. If Jon wants to come back to winterfell I doubt Sansa would stop him. Plus bran knew Jon was more comfortable with the free folk. They never judged him and treated him like family.
