Japanese Karate is newer than the modern sport of boxing, in fact it was made to compete with it as a popular hobby, and TKD was created in the 1960s. Neither are traditional martial arts. Okinawan Karate was a traditional martial art but is based on people knowing how to wrestle (the national pastime of Okinawa) and use weapons. Japanese Karate was made as a sport, not as a self defense of combat art.

He wasn't particularly fast then, and right now with new, more athletic folks at lhw his speed would be even less noteworthy. @@romariorene I'm not saying that's what he was known for. I'm saying it's a piece of his game that gets overlooked or is under appreciated. People keep bringing up Glover being champ as an example that the division has no skill after JBJ left BUT Glover would have beat Jiri if it weren't for a brainfart in the last round and Jiri butchered poor Dom. And Dom arguably won against JBJ. I think the Glover who won the belt might have been a better fighter than the Glover who lost to JBJ. it's true though. LHW is weaker. there were more complete fighters before than now. look at paul craig for example, beat ank and hill. has amazing bjj but if he cant get somebody down, the other guy wins without a doubt. jimmy crute beat paul craig and got destroyed by hill. walker destroyed by hill. walker destroyed the guy who made hill's arm a vegetable. meanwhile, way back when, you had jon jones winning multiple ways, dc winning multiple ways. gus has also won fights multiple ways. anthony rumble, although wasn't a complete fighter still ko'd glover in the 1st round. he couldnt do that to dc, a complete fighter. these fighters today get badly exposed by the previous prime LHW fighters. in lightweight, there's a reason why tony ferguson cant and will never be champion. its because hes old in a very good division. when charles gets old, he wont see a championship again in 155 either. if that doesnt prove LHW is weak right now, i dont know what does.

The best skill jon Jones introduced was the eye poke

Nah its those sharp ass elbows and fight IQ. His eye pokes I dont believe are intentional, he's had the longest reach in the UFC to this day. He extends his arms out to keep the fighters back and I think with that he ends up eye poking cause he doesn't close his fists doing it.

A lot of these techniques work well mostly because of Jon's length and athleticism. Longest legs and arms by far even more than current heavyweights like Ciryl Gane so at LHW it was crazy. Going forward, it's all about how he handle's the weight and how it effects his speed and power.
EDUCATE! Some newer fans know nothing, all they've seen is the tail end of a decade of title defenses at LHW. On the other hand they've seen Cyril dance around people.
This is why i'm interested to see how the Gane fight plays out... Jones changed VERY MUCH on his last couple of fights. And now, after a 3 year lay off, and carrying much more weight... i have a feeling Gane puts him out.
