I'd recommend watching other Taika Waititi movies such as Boy, Hunt for the wilder people and eagle vs shark. In all of these movies he builds comedy around very serious dark backgrounds. Brilliant director.

I watched this with my grandmother in cinema. She's a holocaust survivor. I didn't know what to expect and I was really stressed when the movie started. I constantly checked on her if she's okay with what she saw. It was one of the most memorable experiences together. I still remember the tears shining in her eyes and how she loved that they used shoes to tell the mother's story. Also we live in Hungary and there are small shoe statues at the riverside as a monument of all the jewish people who were being shot to river Danube, so I think for her the shoe as a symbol had an added value.

Remember when the Oscar Award Winning classic ‘Life is Beautiful’ was also ostracized for being insensitive to the holocaust too? People seem to forget how many perspectives such a huge event contained and continually pin farces and satire as something negative. But the point of satirical comedy is TO BRING AWARENESS to events like these, not diminish them. It’s difficult enough to discuss dark topics. So difficult, in fact, that we typically don’t really want to ever have to talk about them until we actually have to. The point of satirical comedy is to actually bring a comfort to discussing uncomfortable topics so that we are able to talk about it more. If you’re able to get even a bit of a laugh somewhere in a dark conversation, you’re automatically able to discuss it further without wanting to leave out of pure disgust of reality. People don’t seem to get context behind comedy and deem all of it as poor taste. Know the nuances and realize the point of it in the first place. This point also goes along with the critique of the character Captain Klenzendorf as being a “sympathetic Nazi.” We do realize that there were MILLIONS recruited into this detestable movement right? While they were definitely ALL horrible people who did horrible things, if you’re going to realistically portray these people as they were (simply people), it’s not necessarily realistic to portray each and everyone as monsters. There’s nuances to personalities even within disgusting ideologies. With that logic then Oscar Schindler and Wilm Hosenfeld (both Nazi Party members) would both be still considered monsters. And yet today they’re both considered heroes to the Jewish community and one of them is buried on Mount Zion. The character of Klenzendorf was still supposed to be a monster by association, but you still can’t have a movement without its nuanced personalities and you can’t have realism without realizing these nuances.

Nazis were portrayed as lunatics of course, but the Russians toward the end had no humor, only anger and violence, shooting their prisoners. That might have happened, a lot, and there are reasons for that, but in a movie that allowed for humanity (or comic lunacy) in all its characters, I marvel they didn't extend that to the Russian soldiers. It's as if the US soldiers were the hero liberators and the Russians were the vengeful punishers, even though I'm not sure they ever liberated any town together. They needed good guys and bad guys. I despise government censorship, but I think it's fair to say the Russian soldiers were the bad guys in this film (apart from the farcical Nazis), with no redeeming qualities. (And yeah, the "talk to your dad" scene was a masterpiece!) Love and peace from the US! ❤

First of all, great video, but second of all it sort of examines how farce can be an appropriate reaction to evil. It's been a while since I watched it so I cant really break it down, but it really goes deep examining a viewpoint contrary to yours (not saying you're wrong) and might broaden your perception or something, idk kzread.info/dash/bejne/aGaXsrKMqdK3m6g.html

Brilliant movie! A wonderfully weird balance of storytelling, comedy, suspense, seriousness, hyperbole, subtlety, lightheartedness, accuracy into telling a story from a new, yet very important perspective answers so many questions that even today matter. We choose to believe what's so easily declared as the truth, we easily declare ourselves not responsible for the suffering of others and scapegoat people, be it out of fear, ignorance, greed, immaturity or for other reasons. You can find that depth in this masterpiece or simply enjoy an oddly entertaining and hilarious movie in spite of the dark topic or everything at the same time, laugh, cry, ponder, giggle, enjoy, feeling sad or scared. That's the true genius of Waititi here.

I just watched this movie tonight , and I have to say , it is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It has comedy , it has some dark stuff , but most of all , it has some real stuff. I saw myself laughing in some parts , and shedding a damn tear in others ( which doesn't happen often ). In my opinion , this movie was done incredibly well and I was actually blown away by it. 10/10 for me. The creativity alone along with the story line is incredible.
