Sean Baron Poor song writing, filler tracks, bloated runtime/track list, certain songs too similar to others, inconsistent quality of vocal delivery, & in several songs Joji is playing it safe. I could go on, but you can go read other reviews & see many of the same criticisms. The fact that the album doesn’t suck despite all those flaws is impressive tho

Man, Nitrous was actually my favorite track off the album :') Conceptually, it felt like the other side of Pretty Boy; whereas Pretty Boy was subdued in tone and gave an impression of feebly brushing off an encroaching depressive tidal wave, Nitrous had some pep to it, and felt a bit more self-assured in its avoidance of feeling. I kinda pictured it like, something big and impactful happens, and it hurts. Nitrous is the act of going to a party and doing dumb shit to brush it off, and it temporarily works. Then Pretty Boy is coming home at the end of the night and having to confront a crashing high you slapped over it. I really dug it, especially as a contrast piece.

Watching fantano has ruined music for me. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Joji’s music in the past, especially as a filthy frank fan. But I listened to this album for the first time earlier today before watching the review and instead of enjoying myself I said “this is gonna be a 6.” I get loads of great new recommendations from this channel but I think my ear is permanently stained by subconsciously wondering what number a bald man will give it. after thought is actually my fav song , along with 777. for me personally it definitely left an impression. Im actually really happy with this review, u gave ur genuine opinion and no one can fault that. for me i appreciate lyrics a little more than the sound, i have alot of song that i like that production wise is weak but the lyrics left a profound impression on me, I've definitely experience that during this album, i think if the album was shorter it would have hit a little harder but ive definitely found that joji's songs often needs multiple listens to really understand the songs.

I feel like the lack of cohesion on contemporary albums has to do with how each track seems to come about as its' own thing and then they're all strung together because even though people are still releasing albums maybe they're not really into making albums per se, it's just about trying to create a catchy single at any given time.

I often feel that's the case with songs that I really like but that are obviously very generic and so people like melon who have listened to those types of songs to death, won't enjoy them in the same way.

I can't agree more with the feelings on this album. Sanctuary and Run are amazing, but I feel like Joji is still experimenting and evolving. Personally I loved his Lofi sadboy sound the most. I lost count of how many times I listened to In Tongues.

There aren’t bad tracks on this album compared to his others tho. This is his strongest album. I give this an 8 out of all his discography. It’s his best by far

How did he say nothing about Ew. It’s by far one of the best tracks on the record, and a killer opening track as well.

Just so you know Anthony Nitrous was actually produced by Clams Casino so that’s why it’s sound so similar to that one other track. It was actually one of my favorite tracks because how groovy it was but I can see why someone wouldn’t like it

Honestly probably the worst review I've seen. Not because I disagree with the rating - which I do - but because you spent 85% of the review talking about the songs you liked and only seemed to dislike 3-4 songs on the album. No idea how you get to a 6 from there.

I agree with a six. Not bad but not perfect. It’s not a perfect album which would get a score of 10 or 9 and it doesnt have every song produced well so I’d see a 6 as a good score for this album

Calling nitrous soulless and bleak is describing its production and aesthetic which not everyone will like (I personally do). It's like calling rap aggressive, a trait that either makes or breaks it for people.

Yeah that’s the weird thing about joji. His albums so far have been very inconsistent. Like he’ll have 1-3 perfect songs that I’ll listen to on repeat for a few months and then 1-3 terrible songs that I can’t listen to without wanting to throw up. It’s weird man lol

i'm a big fan of joji, and everything he's done, filthy frank, pink guy and everything, and this albums got some bangers for sure. i agree about the half baked ideas and stuff for a lot of the songs, and a lot of the songs are just similar to other stuff he's made that it doesnt feel super special anymore. i still love the guy and he's more talented than I am but it didnt feel complete

Fantano is a master at using the circular hand motion technique.

This album grew on me so much with more listens. I would say high hopes and nitrous are poor but I absolutely love every other song and didn't when I first listened to them I can't stop listening to afterthought

I love how no one is treating each track differently than the other, the only thing anyone has to say is “Nothing can compare to Run, if it doesn’t sound like Run, it’s not good.”

Is it just me or does JoJi's music only really pair well with video clips? I feel when i listen as a stand alone there are only a few tracks i really enjoy musically as a whole. But when i watch a music video with his music in the backround of the clip it ties it all in together.

Sometimes music videos do add a lot more to a song. Take for example, Guns N’ Butter by A$AP Rocky, sure he doesn’t say a whole lot lyrically but when you watch the music video, you fully understand the subject matter. He doesn’t go that deep in the lyrics, but Rockey really adds a lot to the song with the music video.

Zachary Clownphobic 1. Listen to “can’t get over you” by joji 2. Listen to “nitrous” by joji 3. Look me in the eyes and tell me it’s not the same song. That’s probably why it’s his least favourite. If you wait until after the intro, and then start the verses at the same time, you can literally sing “can’t get over you” over the whole track and it’ll fit perfectly. Same beat, same length. Pointless song.
