Johnston and Murphy converted from a glued sole to Blake Stitched with Vibram 700 Cork Soles
In this video we will be showing how we resole a pair of J&M Boots that originally were just glued with fake sole stitching that even fooled us thinking they were Black Stitched or Possibly Good Year Welted. However they were neither of those so we made them a Blake Stitch Build.

Thank you for showing us how the machines work. Love it. Great videos.
Great, informative video. Now I understand how a Blake Stitch is executed. I use to like Johnston and Murphy until I bought a pair of Allan Edmonds Factory Seconds.
You have become my favorite cobbler to watch work on KZread
Thinner… sweet great work once again
Great job and conversion. I got eastland high fidelity cap toe boots with cement on soles and I wanted them just like you did that pair but my local cobbler refused.good for you. You rock man.
I love my Nosecone-13, wish I got to use it more often. I think I will clean it up and look into more of it's uses for hammering operations and become more savvy on all it's potential in the shop.
Excellent video. Very Clear and informative. Thank you.
Thank you for explaining everything, I think it’s really fascinating. Like the music too.
Love Your Work
I would LOVE to see more conversions like this. I have a shitty pair of Sperry Gold Cup chukka boots with glued soles. There isn’t even a midsole. Just the footbed/lasting board and then a pos lug sole that’s glued on. However, the leather is a 1.8 mm thick chrome tanned tumbled nubuck that feels to be of ok quality. So, knowing that the leather will last, I’d like to convert them to a hand welt. I just don’t quite know how to yet. But I do have most of the cobbling tools I would need. So, conversion videos like this are of great help to me. There just aren’t very many of them that exist.
Impressive!
are newer J&M(last 5 years) worth restoring/resoling with better material? They are always going on sale at dillards, so just curious if better to restore or just replace.
The solution used to deactivate the glue. Is that turpentine?
Was converting to Blake/Rapid with a new leather midsole not an option?

I’d be disappointed. Adding a leather midsole and rapid Blake would have made these boots last a lot longer and look great with the vibrant v bar soles

I believe he explains in another video that there's an issue with stiff midsoles on chelsea boots. If I remember correctly, because of the lack of lacing, the boot has to hug the foot a certain way and stiff sole interferes with that.
Two questions: On these J&M boots, can you add a leather midsole (on Blake stitching) before you install the outsoles? Also, if the customer requested to, could you have converted these boots to goodyear welted shoes? I'm asking because I have a couple of barely worn J&M shoes that are of the same construction. Thanks!!!
what's the composition of the bath liquid?
I'll try to sew mine by hand. Those itallians glue a really nice leather upper onto a leather sole. Why use such expensive materials and slack the sewing?
Is this an expensive conversion?
I'd be embarassed as a company if I glued soles with fake stitching to some quality looking shoes...especially as an Italian company.
Music louder than voice.
