Johnny vs. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Ойындар

What's considered to be the darkest game in the franchise will be the focus of today's review. It's time to end the Zelda Marathon with The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for the Nintendo 64. How does the direct sequel to Ocarina of Time stack up against its predecessor? Why the time-limit to save the world? How the Hell did this get away with an "E" Rating?

    Jesus this review is a decade old. I remember when it first dropped. This period was the peak of Johnny’s content. The sonic and zelda marathons were back to back if I remember correctly.

    Agreed, these marathons really brought Johnny into his own as a critic, I like how he mentions at the beginning of the sonic marathon “while I don’t think I’ve found my identity as a reviewer….”

    yeah, like Darmani and Mikau were at least both put to rest. the Deku Scrub boy never had any of that and was probably killed by Majora and then transformed into the mask which was put on Link. and seeing the butler see his dead son at the end of the credits always hit me like "wow game.... you really couldnt let this have a happy ending could you..."

    I don't understand why people find the Great Bay Temple harder than the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time. Great Bay Temple is challenging, but its very linear and you only need to change the current once unless you want all the stray fairies and happened to miss one. Even then, the reward of double defense is worth it. Also, Great Bay Temple makes great use of the Zora Mask and Ice Arrows, and has fun minibosses!

  • @Mona-573

    I found Great Bay Temple easy. I never had to look up anything in a walkthrough, save for a moment where I didn't know you could freeze the flowing water on the ladder with the Ice Arrows.

    I think the great bay temple is the worst in Majora's mask, but that's saying something since I like it more than most temples in Oot (Deku tree, Jabu Jabu, Forest, Water, Spirit) I think the reason everyone hates it is because of George who's an asshole, but I actually don't mind George, especially if you compare it to Morpha.

  • @Erk1234567

    @Erk1234567

    +Nightfall I don't know, for me the water temple is full of poorly placed treasure chests and doors, switching water levels and boots was also a drag. I like Great Bay temple because swimming feels great, water flow is more interesting than redirecting the water level and I like the mechanic of freezing the water to make platforms. Different strokes, I guess I just feel like (ignoring the fairies), GBT has a more interesting design

  • @mydadshowering2978

    @mydadshowering2978

    Only problems I ever had with the water temple were switching the iron boots on the N64 and Morpha, I thought the iron boots just made it tedious, and Morpha feels more like a fight against the camera, more so than George from the Great bay temple for me. Aside from that I just found it boring, you had to change the water level far more often than you had to change the flow of water in the Great Bay. I always get bored by it.

    happy anniversary majora's mask!!! my favorite zelda game along with link to the past,links awakening,the oracle games,wind waker(still my favorite art style in the series that i want to see in a console game again.:3),twilight princess(i like its gameplay and my favorite characters in it are midna and especially telma.:3), and botw.(a fantastic breath of fresh air the series needed and that i want the series to stick with and improve.) it's the best of the n64 zelda games as it has a better world,music,game-play(especially with the versatility of the mask.), and ESPECIALLY story and use of characters compared to ocarina of time(it really isn't the best game in the franchise as the previous mentioned games are better and sure as hell isn't the best game period by a long-shot as it really is a 3d link to the past but it is a solid foundation that majora took what was good in it and improved like giving the ocarina of time a better use than the game named after it while adding its unique dark flavor that i still love since i first saw it in magazine ads.)honestly in terms of a future zelda game after breath of the wild 2 i would love to see another wind waker game focusing on toon link & tetra exploring new hyrule,either a remake of the oracle games(just handled better than the links awakening remake like maybe have it follow up from the remakes ending.)or a game in its style,a return to twilight princess world that brings midna and telma back,or a sequel to majoras mask focusing on links search for navi.

    I, too, didn't really like the game when I first played it. Probably because it took me forever to figure out how to get Link back to his human form. But after a while playing it, and after you understand the concept of time-sensitive events, i.e., each character in the game having something happening at a specific place and time, and sometimes only after you've completed certain tasks, it really grows on you. Some masks are really useful and after you get a few, you end up wanting them all. Unlike previous Zelda games, you really get a connection the the NPCs, every character has its own story rather than being just a random character that's just there to make the towns look more lively. Also, after you understand that you don't need to complete a whole dungeon in the 3 days (once you get dungeon's item, you can restart the time and go back to the dungeon and complete the second part), and also after you learn the inverted song of time to slow down time, then suddenly the time limit isn't a big deal. There are only 4 dungeons, but IMO they're a lot more interesting and harder than any Ocarina of time dungeon. Stone Tower temple for instance, is just pure genius.

  • @ApexGale
    @ApexGale7 жыл бұрын

    I remember, as a child, the music in Termina field terrified me and I would always end up looping the day back, never even once making it to the swamp. Ocarina of Time's first dungeon also scared me, and Gohma was the main reason why. I really don't know why they scared me so much. Anyway, the darkest point of Majora's Mask is understanding that by resetting time after you complete a side mission, you're resetting things back to the way they were. You can't make everyone happy in one three day cycle. Some people WILL have their happiness forsook.

    Majora's Mask has become one of my all time favorite games. Everything from the fantastic gameplay, to the awesome story, the atmosphere, the characters, the dungeons, the impressive visuals (for N64 standards), the soundtrack is damn perfect if I do say so myself. Ever since I got the Gamecube version back in the day, I've grown to adore the hell out of this game. To anyone wanting to try out this masterpiece for themselves, try getting the N64 version over the 3DS version. It's superior.

    I just don't like Zelda in general. Basically it's boring in my opinion. You run around, kill enemies, platform a bit, and...yeah.I guess the stories are cool...the atmosphere is ok...the music is FANTASTIC i'll give you that. But eh, it's just running around platforming and killing things, it doesn't have variety.Heck that's why i find Twilight princess the best(even if i still dislike that one), the wolf added more variety, i actually prefered him over normal Link. But hey. opinions.

    George Miles I see what ya mean. Zelda isn't for everybody, to be honest I don't own many Zelda games but the ones I do own are stuff I play A LOT. Majora's Mask though, it's a different story. It's not like Ocarina Of Time, it's not like Wind Waker or Twilight Princess, it's a whole different game. I have a friend who's only Zelda game was OoT, he didn't like it too much. Had him try out Majora's Mask, he was _hooked_. Me? I fuckin' love Zelda games. Without OoT we wouldn't have game series' such as GTA, the Pacman games, Crash etc... Important reminder that this was actually a challenge. The devs didn't want to make a OoT expansion because they thought it was perfect, so ForgotTheName told them that if they don't make an expansion, they'd have to make a direct sequel in only 1 year. Thus it being so short. The 3-day cycle was also great because then you could create a life for each NPC and various different events without consuming infinite data.

    Some may say that by the end of the game, it feels like you didn't accomplish anything because you had to reset time and all that, effectively erasing everything you did to help people. I felt that way too, so on my first playthrough (brace yourselves, this is gonna get a bit insane) on my final three-day cycle, I ACTUALLY went and beat every boss, restoring their respective area, and did as MANY side-quests as I could squeeze in between the boss battles. I had a whole chart set up of how I would do things, and lemme tell you, the Song Of Soaring and the Reversed Song Of Time are an ABSOLUTE GODSEND. I couldn't do EVERY side quest in that last three-day cycle, but I did the majority of them, and I felt more accomplished than I have ever felt my entire life.

    My story with this game was the same as Johnny. I read the creepy pasta of Ben Drowned and got rather creeped by it. I didn't go straight to play it though. That is until I found Johnny's channel saw his Metroid reviews got introduced to that series and also saw his Zelda game reviews. Thats when I decided to give the series a go and played through Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and then, played a couple of minutes of Majoras Mask and stopped playing as soon as I picked it up. Not because of the intro, or because of the creepy pasta, but because I was honest to God intimidated by it. I skipped it and replayed through Ocarina and Link to the Past. Then I played Twilight Princess and loved that. Then I decided to go back to Majora's Mask. I dedicated the entire summer of 2014 to playing and mastering that game. The game intimidated me and challenged me. I decided to take up that challenge. And with the help of some guides and videos. I braved through it. I got up to Ikana Castle when suddenly my save file got corrupted and everything I worked for was gone. I got bummed out and depressed. I would not go back and revisit that game until October of 2015 when I finally got a new 3ds with Majora's Mask 3d. This time I was prepared. My first playthrough was not 100%. With the knowledge I had of my first playthrough I plowed the 3d version. I got 100% on my first save of the game. If it isn't obvious, I love this game. Everything about it. My first experience like most didn't leave a good first impression, but afterwards its pretty much the one Zelda game I look forward to revisiting.

    You're definitely not alone about this. Just finished Majora's Mask for the first time yesterday. The beginning of the end (where you call the four giants) was epic (and kinda freaky when Majora's Mask started floating with Skull Kid hanging limply from the mask, I thought he died O_O) and the scenes after the battle with Majora gave me tears (in a sort of happy/sad way, confusing to explain) I was quite surprised with how bright and cheery a lot of the credits seemed, and since I had decided to defeat all 4 bosses, return the Deku princess, both Romani Ranch (tasks? sidequests?) and lead the cucco chicks to make that guy happy in my final 3-day cycle, those things in the credits really would have happened :) (unfortunately I wasn't able to fit Kafei and Anju into that cycle, though.) The scene with the deku butler and his son was also very sad. :( Anyway, this comment is getting too long. Just had to say this whole game has a great story and I especially loved the ending. Now I feel lost since I finished it.

    Know what I miss from OoT & MM? The atmosphere! Being sucked into the world like it was a drug and it never letting go of you. The look, the experience, the soul. Even the music, whilst perhaps not best described as 'catchy' was memorable... I can still remember how eerie and yet perfect some the N64 pieces were; compare that today where the music is obviously of a higher quality, but seems more lifeless - too polished, it still misses that certain... feeling of something bigger. Sure TP paid homage to it, and it was really neat how WW gave you cryptic clues about what happened to the Hero of Time's Hyrule, but Nintendo never really recaptured that atmospheric experience, and after so many years, I don't think the LoZ will ever move to recapture it now - the series has gone in a sort of different direction. The result is technically brilliant LoZ games, that whilst still enjoyable to play, have no real 'soul' to them, and so fall short of providing an 'experience' through which you are living something (looking at you Skyward Sword).

    When you think about it, this quite possibly the darkest and saddest game in the franchise storyline wise. While the whole theory on link being dead may be true (and I believe that it it), Link truly doesn't move on until however long later when Twilight Princess takes place. The Hero's Shade (Hero of Time Link) even states that he held deep regrets that for years he could not pass along his knowledge to those who could have benefited from it. He accepted that he had passed onto the next life, but in the end, he still had regrets that allowed his spirit to linger in the world of the living. But, that's what makes the Legend of Zelda's storyline so interesting and impressive; y'know, despite it's sometimes confusing timeline connections. I love this franchise for the story and adventure; definitely worthy of being up there in my Top 5 Gaming Franchises, seconded ONLY by the Sonic series.

    TonyIsRet-2-GO! I personally don't believe Link ever died in this game because Link has fallen longer distances in the Fire Temple and only taken a heart of damage. I think he would be fine falling down a tree trunk. Also, did you realize that he fell on a flower? You most likely did. Did you also notice that however high Link falls in Majora's Mask, all damage is negated if he lands on a flower? Interesting isn't it? (If you haven't noticed try in the Stone Tower Temple or Snowhead Temple) Moreover, it makes sense in the timeline that Link is still alive. In Twilight Princess you receive the Hero Bow that is stated to have been used by the Hero of Time. But in Ocarina of Time, you don't get the Hero Bow, you get the Fairy Bow. In Majora's Mask however, Link DOES find the Hero Bow. The color scheme even matches better.

If you're playing the GCN one you have to stick to the regular sail plus the pauses and so on until you get the song to teleport. HD edition has a super sail you can get on Windfall's auction house after activating day and night cycles (in other words beating Dragon Roost Cave). It makes you travel faster and you no longer have to change the direction of the wind manually. I like WW's story and concept... but sailing ruins it for me.

For WW he thought the original release was a few steps from great( Zelda retrospective), but since they fixed the boat issue in the HD port, I think he likes it better. Twilight Princess said he enjoyed it less because it rehashed a lot from OoT, but at the end of the MM commentary, he said that it was ''meh at worst'' and ''pretty good at best''. And in the SGB let's play of ALTTP his zelda order was like this: 1. ALLTP 2. MM 3.OoT And according to his opinion of ALBW I think it'll be either #2 or #1. Either way OoT will be out of it. You exclude yourself though by 'seing through the bullshit' like most allknowing people on the internet. People tend to love the Zelda they entered the series with and on top of that most fans will have their own periods when they were out of gaming and missed some entries. I just finished Minish Cap for the first time and realized it is one of the best Zeldas of all! Johnny; I discovered your reviews about 10 months or so back, and so far I've just been loving them! I really get a kick out of how you cover the games in a non-bias way, but then throw in your frustrations/pet hates/loves along the journey. It makes for an educating, yet entertaining experience. Looking up at the date of publish for your Zelda videos, it's been about a year and a half since you last covered a Zelda console title (obviously excluding your most recent one for. I'm really interested to see what you have to say for the rest of the console releases, and with the new Zelda: Hyrule Warriors (very fair review of that BTW) out on the market and with the release of Zelda Wii U announced to hit the shelves next year, I think the timing couldn't get any better. You've done just about every Sonic and Mario game imaginable (yeah not really, but still heaps of em), and I know you really like them games (Sonic especially, I do listen!) but I think it's about time you give your some 130,000+ subscribers what they want ;) Not speaking for all of them, but out of the hundreds and thousands of views you've received on your Zelda videos alone, I think it's safe to say you have a large following of Zelda fans looking to you for a good take on a fascinating franchise! I speak not only as a fan of the Zelda series, but as a loyal follower of your videos. May you please tackle the rest of the Zelda console releases? If not for yourself, then for the (what I'm sure is) thousands upon thousands of requests you must be getting for them since you closed the Zelda marathon last year! Come on, mate! I know you've got allot planned with some of the new Wii U titles out, and other ideas you've got going on, but could you just drop even a hint that you'll be covering the other Zelda titles due for any time in the foreseeable future?

    To be honest, I always thought that the person that Link was looking for was Saria. She did accompany him on his journey, they were close, and he's searching the Kokiri Forest, where both she and Link resided. It just makes more sense than searching for Navi of all people, I mean fairies.

    But the thing is is that Saria is a kokiri. Magical beings who CANT leave the boundaries of the Kokiri forest. Not to mention she's a SAGE so she's probably binded to Hyrule by the gods should the assistance of the sages be needed. Didn't stop Hyrule from flooding and Wind Waker taking place though.

    This is one of the greatest sequels ever made rivaled only by Melee and DKC2. Kept all the good qualities of OoT while being different enough to warrant being a sequel. Made within 1 year using reused OoT assets and it was still good. This game is a little miracle

    I love Majora's Mask myself (in fact, I consider it the second-best game ever made!), but I can't believe you didn't mention the save system! It's not a deal breaker by any means, but it can seriously be aggravating when you need to save urgently but are nowhere near an Owl Statue and the Owl Statue you are near to you forgot to activate and cannot due to having your sword repaired. Not to mention, the only way to save PERMANENTLY is to reset time. Anything else will be erased the moment you load your file.

But then I got really deep into it while going for 100% at the same time, and let me tell ya, I was having THE TIME OF MY LIFE! Ikana Canyon is probably my favourite of the four areas. Something about it reminds me of Gerudo Valley and Desert Colossuss from Ocarina of Time which were also my favs.

    The first time I ever played this game, there was an instance where I accidentally stumbled across how to get the Postman's Hat. That's one of the masks gotten in the longest sidequest in the game. I was originally going for the bottle that contains Chateau Romani because I needed the bottle for trying to collect the Zora eggs. Needed to make sure I had four. When I saw that I got the Postman's Hat, decided to take a swing at the Couple's Mask.

    Interesting fact about the 3 day time limit during development one of the developers Yoshiaki Koizumi made a board game that centered around Cops & Robbers in the game you had 7 days to catch the robbers so he used that idea for Majora's Mask however since the team was on a strict deadline to finish making the game under a year they cut the 7 days and put it to 3 days instead. The 7 days CAN be found in the game using a glitch called the 4th day glitch.

    Awesome review! The only thing I always find myself disagreeing with is when I hear about MM only having "4" dungeons. While this may be strictly true in that you only earn four heart containers from dungeons, there are numerous mini-dungeons (skulltula houses, under the well, Ikana Castle), as well as many dense outdoor zones. I just think saying it only has four dungeons makes it sound much shorter and smaller than it actually is IMO.

    When playing a Zelda game like ALTTP, I do it to unwind. MM on the other hand, doesn't really work like that. You always have to consider the best way to spend each 3-day cycle and you also need to keep track of time-related events such as meeting up with NPCs. It's those qualities that make me much more invested in the game due to the effort you need to put into playing it. That Termina is such an amazingly fleshed-out world is just icing on the cake.

    Has anyone else ever noticed how absolutely brilliant the Stone Tower Temple's concept is? Pretty much every Zelda game tries to test you on everything you had to learn throughout the dungeons when you reach the final one, but none of them do it quite so brilliantly as Stone Tower. Most 3D Zelda games are satisfied with simply giving you a room that mimics an earlier dungeon in a sort of "hey remember this, we're quizzing you now" sort of way, but Majora approaches it a little differently, thanks in part to the fact that it only has 3 previous dungeons to draw from. Woodfall requires you to use the Deku masks ability to fly and the various torches with the bow to progress through many of its rooms requiring the player to look before tackling the situation and to pay attention to their immediate surroundings and the placement of even unassuming objects in the room. Snowhead is built around one central puzzle that doesn't reset as you move between rooms and that you keep coming back to and have to keep in mind while navigating your way throughout the rest of the dungeon and solving smaller puzzles. Great Bay requires you to adjust the flow of the water changing how the rooms connect to each other requiring the player to understand how what they do affects the flow of the temple as a whole. Stone Tower combines all of this. It uses all 4 of Links forms at various points and it's built around the concept of flipping the whole temple around. This gimmick requires the player to pay attention to the various elements of the individual rooms and how they've been affected when it flips and if the player was paying attention to the various room layouts and set pieces the first time through it is much easier to navigate the second time even though the rooms look radically different once flipped. It's also one central puzzle gimmick that the player has to keep in mind while solving other puzzles, and flipping the dungeon alters how all the rooms connect to each other and how the player moves through the temple as a whole. Also, you ever notice that the portal to Twinmold's arena is in the same room you fought the mini-boss Garo only flipped? Your trek through the dungeon ends in the same room both times nicely book ending it. It could have been executed a little better if flipping was less of a pain and you were required to do it multiple times, but since it is a pain I'm glad it's not required so much.

    This is my favorite Zelda game and its dissapointing that its still overshadowed or outright forgotten for OoT which is still a good game yes, and I can see how you could perfer it in some ways, but Majora's Mask is clearly the superior game with more variety, technicality, story, difficulty, etc. that makes for a more fun experience, at least for me, AND it was only made in a year with a smaller team as well.
