11:43 Speedrunners actually use that glitch to skip some levels. If you complete the 1-1 level after warping to it, it'll actually count as completing the stage you were in before warping. Saves a ton of time.

Fun fact: You can never get a bonus level in world 1- extra. This is due to limitations caused by poochy interacting with the player in that level. Also, that one bonus room seems like a wrong warp
There were so many things that freaked me out as a little kid in this game that I'm still anxious just watching gameplay. It was a hell of a good time back then even if I had to be guided by my older sibling.
This game....this game holds the most value to me. It's the game I would spend countless hours playing with my mom. Racing to see who can beat the game first. How many bonus challenges we can get. And now that she's passed away, this game is even more precious to me. I have been feeling really depressed lately, so I decided to boot up Yoshi's Island cause it's music is like the perfect anti-depresent. And I think my dad remembered how much mom and I played this game too. As soon as he saw this game on my tv, I saw sadness come across his face and he just asked me "why". I told him, I just have happy memories of this game. I feel connected with my mom when I play it.
An incredible art style allows games like these to be age masterfully
This game was fucking incredible. Also so much nostalgia attached to it. The art style still looks so great by today's standards. It looks like it could legitimately be one of those high quality indie platformers people still make. And no video game will ever give me the same kind of anxiety and terror in my heart as this game did fighting bowser. Seeing it run towards you demonically super fast really gets the heart pumping.
This was an EGGcellent review, man! I have so many memories with this game. I think I may love it even more than Super Mario World 1! :D
Wow that bonus room leading back to the first level is completely new to me, and I consider Yoshi's Island my favorite game of all time! It's pretty cool to be able to learn something new about a game so many years later
Yoshi's Island...easily the best game from my childhood. Even though it was the GBA port, the game was still a ton of fun. I can easily remember myself spending hours playing the game trying to perfect each level (never did, but I got close xP). The levels, the artwork, the music...all of it was awesome.
2:04 No wonder why Kirby and Mario never gets along in smash bros.
Ah! My all-time favourite 2-D platformer. This review means a lot. I grew up on the GBA version, in fact it came with my GBA so it's the first game that was actually "mine" rather than the family's too, so seeing the graphical distinctions are a nice surprise for me. But beyond that, everything you've said here is pretty much how I feel about the game. I really appreciate seeing my primary reviewer on KZread finally touch upon a game that means so much to me.
I was born in 2003, and I think this game looks amazing!
Oh man, I have fond memory for this game in particular. It was the very first game that I've beaten on my own without my sibling's help, first played the game on the GBA, so it had all the additional stages exclusive to the GBA version. Completing the game wasn't the my top priority back then, but this game has a surprisingly complex design (being both beginner friendly and difficult) that I have no problem going back to. Pixel Art is top notch for this game, it has aged very well.
Yoshi's Island is one of my favourite Mario games, I would have it in my top 3 Mario games of all time, I think Yoshi's Island definitely has the best Boss fights in the entire franchise, great review Johnny :)
Easily my favorite childhood memory when it comes to gaming.

Yeah, getting AND KEEPING 30 stars is tough in the Yoshi series. What I tended to do was unlock World 1's mini game, and then farm it for items that give you 10-20 stars and magnifying glasses that reveal red coins and hidden obstacles. Made the game a lot easier in terms of getting 100%.
Excellent. Just excellent. :)

Me two
I particularly like the 3DS Yoshi's Island's take on the simple plot this series' titles all share. Baby Bowser has been harassing the Yoshis, but they can't find the guy...until a baby falls from the sky and is compelled like a magnet toward his brother, who's at Bowser's castle. It's less "We'll help you find your bro," and more "Hey, we can use this kid!"
That sudden 16-bit flute at the start let me know this video was going to be something special.
This game will probably remain one of my most memorable games. I only ever had the Game Boy Advance version growing up, and I probably put just as much time, if not more, into this game than Super Mario World (which I also had on the GBA, and maxed out the score and 100 percented). The only gripes I ever had with it would have been those weird vehicle power-ups and that incessant cry ;_; Also, great review Johnny!

Yoshi's Island, for a first Yoshi game in the series, it really kicks ass! Even if I never played this game, I still think that this game is fantastic. It's so sad that the Yoshi series is not that popular because of the modern games.
this is without a doubt my favorite mario to date, amazing and quirky soundtrack and surprisingly complex, but still child friendly levels. also my favorite review of yours because you seriously share almost all the same memories i do of this game. :)
11:48 ah yes, the 1-1 warp. Very common glitch, good on you for accidentally discovering that as a kid
10/10. This game is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Just pure platforming perfection!
The glitch you found in 3-1 is actually a fairly known glitch in this game's speedrunning community called the Wrong Warp glitch. It occurs when Yoshi enters a warping area improperly and can sometimes warp you to the top-right corner of 1-1. This glitch can also be achieved by entering a downward pipe and jumping on the same frame.
A new Johnny vs video? FUCK YES!!!

SilJeff I was surprised at the amount of negativity that game receives as well. SashaandStorm I loved the original and I also liked the DS version. I really liked how you could have more babies than just Mario. When I think of the DS version then there's not a ssinlge episode which pops into my mind, sadly.
@SashaandStorm

Nova Bombe Having more babies than just Mario was something I liked as well. So one of the reasons that people didn't care as much for DS was because it wasn't memorable, at least compared to the original game?
@ofanichan
10 жыл бұрын
On the note about babies; I still hate how Baby Wario, Baby Donkey Kong and stuff never made a comeback. I mean, I would LOOOOOVE having Baby Wario in a Mario Kart game. A lot more than having Baby Daisy or Baby Rosalina at least.
Haha! I never really noticed that Yoshi made that face when he got out of the frog! Damn, now I can't unsee that and it's engraved into my mind. Great review, though!
If one were to count Yoshi's Island in the Mario Series proper due to its title I'd have to say it is, without a doubt, my favorite game in the franchise. It's not just nostalgia for you Johnny, I didn't play the game until 2010. I'm not saying it's perfect, or that it's the best game ever, but it's just so colorful, detailed, and fun, and that's what matters in a platformer.

#GoddamnitPoochy
1:33 oooh boi did that age poorly
As nasty as the commercial was, ya gotta admit NOBODY suspected Nintendo to reference Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.
The main benefit to getting 100 in every stage in a world is not only do you unlock a new stage, but you also unlock a flower game. By playing these, you get special items you can use during normal stages. Most of them are useful, like the watermelons which last for a long time and the magnifying glass which directly reveals red coins (this is more useful in the GBA port, obviously), but the main two items are the star +10 and star +20. These are lifesavers when you're going for 100%. At the end of a normal stage before you go through the goal ring, you can just bust these out and get an easy 30 stars. You can't use them during boss fights, but there is a star ring checkpoint before every boss, so just use one of these items, go through the checkpoint so your count maxes out, and keep fighting the boss until you beat it without taking a single hit.
I fucking lost it at 8:42. XD
How the hell did you do the 1-1 warping glitch. For more details watch the Son Of A Glitch Yoshi's Island.
Man my little bro and I played this on GBA so much. One of my favorite games ever. Not living in the SNES era, I didn't even know it was a port lol.
It's actually worth mentioning that Jumpman in Donkey Kong isn't actually the Mario we know and love, that is actually his father, because the Donkey Kong in that game was today's Donkey Kong's grandfather. Which is why Mario doesn't get hurt when falling from a high position (not counting Super Mario 64)
I stopped everything I was doing just to watch this video. My favorite game of all time and it's getting reviewed by Johnny!?
8:47-9:16 Funniest part of the review
12:48 The good thing is the SNES Classic and the recent SNES Online from the Switch include the original version on the get go, which is so much a blessing. 😊

Can't wait for you to tear Sunchine a new one for having the same "flaws" that other 3D games in the series do.
One of my proudest moments with this game (specifically the GBA version because I didn’t even know there was an SNES version until I was like 7 or 8) was when I discovered that the famous 1-UP trick from the original super Mario bros was actually in the game. If you position one of those roly-poly enemies (those weird jumping things with the bulbous noses) near a pipe that shy guys pop out of, and your egg stock isn’t maxed out, you can have the shy guys infinitely jump into the roly-poly which will eventually rake in the infinite lives.
I first got the GBA version of this game as a gift when i started 5th grade. I eventually got the original version for my birthday a couple years ago from a friend. It definitley brings back alot of memories
