All the remixes of the zones are top-notch, the music for the new zones are so *FUCKING GOOD*. Pressgarden Act 2, GODDAMN! I love this stage, it's so serene and the music... *ORGASM* The controls are perfect, not a Sonic 4 stop and go bullshit. I roll down hills and loops and I go faster and faster. There's actual flow in my movements. BLUE SPHERE! It's good seeing this come back! We have layouts returning from Sonic 3 and Knuckles; we got some brand new layouts. I fucking missed the perfect again for the 5th time, but I got plenty more chances in getting those medals, and the medals! I can unlock a soundtest and listen these songs like in Sonic CD, and Debug Mode is back. I can make stupid shit with rings and end stages early because *FUCK PUYO PUYO*! Knuckles and Knuckles, one's a benik, one's a Rastafarian. Is that the Death Egg Robot in Green Hill Zone?! *THERE IS NO GOD*. Holy shit, mom look, it's me who's riding the Eggomatic. EAT SHIT ROBOTNIK! I can use a flame shield in Oil Ocean! Oh my god, I can set the oil on fire! I've always wonder what would happen if you threw a match in this place since my old Sonic 2 review, and they answered that! They actually fucking answered that! *I AM THE GOD OF HELLFIRE!* Super Sonic, yeah! I can conformly grab all the emeralds and abuse this son of a bitch just like before! Also, I don't have to worry about the invincibility theme loop every 5 goddamn seconds! Seriously, that shit was the worse! K-leb I think he probably had a big role in it- others had already made “& Knuckles” jokes, but as far as I’m aware he’s the first one to specifically use _”Knuckles_ & Knuckles.”

I love this review because Johnny is normally so laid back and we get a lot of that here, but seeing Johnny get super hyped about a game is pretty refreshing and hilarious to watch.

Late reply here, but my birthday was the day before, August 14th. In fact Matt Manheimer (I hope that's how you spell it) who used to run Tails' Channel did a live stream the day before Mania came out to play all the classic games and also gave out codes for Mania when it came out. I unfortunately didn't get one and only watched the live stream for a little bit, but it was nice that he did that on my birthday!

Probably the best ending to a review ever.

Since Johnny brought up the callbacks, I may as well mention the fact that for the first time in the series, Knuckles actually uses his brain to ponder why the scene with the attempted Master Emerald theft seemed familiar, referencing when Eggman stole it in Sonic & Knuckles. At least in this game ol' Rad Red figured it out BEFORE the gem got swiped.

Sonic mania is the only game that has ever made me cry. The next chapter in my favorite games that formed many of my friendships. It was beautiful.

Sony has n sane trilogy, Sega has mania, and Nintendo has Odyssey.

I pretty much agree lol 3d sonic hasn't been all bad, most 3d sonics to me are usually go from good to average, generations, colors, adventure titles, sonic unleashed to a extent are all decent games with generations and colors be actually very good in my opinion. Kinda sad how everyone basically says 3d sonic is "horrid and needs to die" when their have been some good games in the past but idk just my opinion.

Sonic Heroes, Generations and Colors weren't THAT bad...

As someone who's only beaten Sonic 2, and never gotten far in 1 or 3, never playing CD... I think one of the many compliments I can give Mania is that I have a hard time telling which stages are new or old. It all flows together so well, my non-nostalgic perspective is totally fooled. Good review, and your enthusiasm is contagious. Let's all enjoy Sonic Mania together.

Kite Darkside so only really like one stage is old to you (except Angel Island but it's only in a cutscene so it doesn't count)but even Chemical Plant Zone is almost completely different and is one of the best stages because of the speed you gain and less drowning bits.

He's going to buy 20 Sonic Mania Plus's no doubt

Loved all the subtle callbacks to your Sonic reviews, Johnny! Makes a longtime fan of your work feel all warm inside.

If this is the sonic stuff. Can't wait to see the Metroid reviews. lol

Xenomon I'm fine with that, I can play this game for 2 years fine, I just hope all stages are new or are from Mania but changed completely like say marage saloon Zone got completely made into a city with some dessert parts left or Studiopolis got completely destroyed or caught all on fire and turned into ashes in Act 2 and abandoned with the same enemies just more broken and a different fighting way because how they are broken, example the microphones that electrocute you only electrocute from one angle or have wires that they electrocute that are scattered.

It's already been 4 years and that ending is still hilarious 😆

I think this is the only good Sonic Mania review video on KZread I actually like. Edit: The rest are just people bashing on 3D Sonic games and saying, "The Sonic Franchise had a rocky start when transition to 3D."

Love this review. I've come back to watch the ending of it where Johnny nerds out to the extreme so many times. It's great.

God, the intro music by the legendary Tee Lopes just makes this perfect.

Peak Johnny right here. The best opening, the middle of the Nintendo Renaissance, Sonic Mania, the geek out at the end- perfect video.

Nice review Johnny, but you forgot that there was also another person that worked on the music. The name Hyper Potions. And he made the music for the opening of the game. He's on youtube so anyone should check out his stuff.

I actually saw Johnny's first review of Sonic 2 and that crack about "What would happen if a lit match ever fell into Oil Ocean Zone?" was pretty funny. I'm as shocked as anyone who've wondered that in regards to the fact that the question was ACTUALLY ANSWERED. Something tells me those who developed Sonic Mania either saw said review or have wondered themselves what would happen.
