I did the same thing to my pec, looks similar, it has been about 11 months for me, and I have been making major adjustments to training, and I have gotten back to about 95% myself. I am training much more consciously, I appreciate the post, nice seeing the recovery here. Thanks

I tore my pec about 14 months ago. Very scary. I did not go to the ER and have rehabed it on my own. This video was very inspiring and promising at that time. Thanks for posting it, and it's great to see your journey. If anyone has just had this injury and is freaking out and looking at the internet trying to figure out what to do, you will be alright. It's probably not a bad idea to see a professional, but you will heal. I dont try to bench heavy or kip into muscle ups any more but I feel great, still train regularly with those small considerations.

My example isn't so extreme but the last time I rolled on my ankle I refused to take my anti-inflammatory pills and I walked every day against the recommendations of friends and hospital. I was fine in a week, and couldn't be surer that taking the pills and sitting on my rump would have extended that needlessly.

Anti-inflammatory pills on a sprained ankle is totally useless. Even a cast is, most of the time, not recommended. But it is way more easy ... Physical therapy as soon as possible is the best. You may have well recovered from your injury but your proprioception is probably not as good as your other ankle.

Same goes for broken bones bro, If you don't need to brace the bone to hold it in place than don't get a cast, just put a splint of some sort on your arm and be really careful with it. I've had a lot of broken bones and casts+pills definitely increase recovery time.

With akles i had a a lot of probles especially torn ligaments and somehow crushed talar articulations (high drop jumps), stretching but mostly SQUATING helped me A LOT, both resting in squat, then doing BW squats, and then back squats helped the most. Also swimming is great =)

Can do pushup on knee and like one real pushup. I advise if you go non surgical definitely focus on ROM and isometrics early on. As pain decreases you'll see just how weak muscle is as you attempt to load it. This process is slow but really tge only thing im worried about is throwing as I'm afraid of any violent motion ATM. Super slow recovery, and would be slow surgically or non surgical

@DH-NO-LIMIT yeah if you're having rotator cuff issues often times an evaluation by PT can help discover the issues causing pain/dysfunction. My RC exercises focused on resisted ER with bands, lower trap strengthening, scapula depression and adduction and post delt strengthening because my anterior delt has become super active since pec tear Sidelying or standing Resisted ER Wall slides with lift off Prone T/Y raises Quarduped exercises Want exercises for ROM Pushup pos. holds with scap squeezes Planks Really depends on your personal needs. And it can be easier to have a physio assess your kinematics and tailor program specifically to you rather than figuring out for yourself. No idea if this is helpful, but good luck man!

so instead of having it surgically reattached he instead decided just to strength every other body part to compensate for the loss of muscle power out put his torn pec use to give. that seems . . . out there. if one does not know they tore a pec then no foul but if you know you tore it and do not get it reattached that seems off. nice music though.

+Alc Anon I actually had the exact same injury and it was on gymnastics rings as well. My pectoral tendon ruptured and my arm looked identical. I did not have surgery either (although I sometimes regret not getting it fixed. It has been a few years and I can do most normal movements, but I don't do dips or gymnastics rings or any heavy chest lifting. I feel some tightness occasionally or a minor tweak. My fear is tearing my shoulder or another head of my pec as they are over-compensating since a tendon is unattached. Props to John and maybe I should push harder! I am just wondering if the risk of other injuries (long term) will go up under the circumstances. I can hear Ido (with his accent) calling me a p*&&y!

+Alc Anon Same here, man. Had total rupture of ACL and also ruptured meniscus (+sprained MCL, but that was fine after a month). My situation was different from yours Alc Anon, because my knee is not swelling, and it is very stable. In fact, I didn't even know that I have torn ACL, until the MRI check. First few weeks I was doing only leg raises and these easy exercises. I tried to get back ROM, and strengthen my quad. After a month or so, I have been able to walk, ride a bike, and so on. Now it is about 9, 10 weeks after injury, and I started with squats (at about 30-50 kg) and deadlifts (30-50 kg). Also a lot of wall squats, hip thrust (bodyweight), single leg deadlifts etc. I try to ride a bike in the gym every day and walk as much as possible. Surgery is in about 3 months!

It is good thing to strenghten quadriceps. Because you will not recognize your leg after surgery. Atrophy will be start immedeatily. Don't rush with rehabillitation take time . To 3 times a day isometric exercices in begging and A LOT OF ICE ,follow routine excerices. You will be back in 3-4 months but a lot of fear will be mental. So don't worry man in 6-12 months you will be as good as new. Stay strong !

I would really like to see how Johnny is doing now that 2 years have passed. I have a similar injury but opted out of surgical repair. If the tendon rips off the humerus surgery can repair it with 90% or more success in terms of strength and function returning. My tendon is still attached to my humerus, making it very difficult for surgeons to sew my detached muscle back to the end of the tendon. I was told I might get 60% functional strength back and a new tendon might have to be taken from my achilles and used as a graft. For these reasons I decided not to have surgery and live with the injury. I find this video uplifting as I'm trying to come to terms with the permanent damage I have. Something as simple as a push up is no longer so simple. Hopefully Ido Portal or Johnny can post an update. I'd like to hear him speak on living with his injury and how it has affected his life.

Take a look at the anatomy again and I think you will see that there is a full rupture to the sternal head of the pec major (the clavicular head is rarely torn) . The pec major’s distal attachment is on the humerus and a tear results in bruising consistent to what is seen in the video. The muscle you see popping out appears to be the pec minor.

He already has problems with his spine. It's lateral rotation so he doesn't feel it yet. Clearly visible at 3:38. Very bad.

I don't question the rehab approach, but I do question the wisdom of putting so much load on the head of the pec under a wide range of motion. Seems to me that there would be a good probability of a rupture, despite progressions and prerequisite movements. To each his own, though.

I agree. Movements like this are pure brute force that rely too heavily on primary movers without stabilizer engagement. We won't see this athlete doing movements like this beyond his 50's. There is no longevity in such brute basic force.

***** Nice to see someone comment who has come to similar conclusions about fitness. Circus stunts really sums it up. This type of stuff is pretty and impresses all the ladies. It's a good way to show off at the beach shirtless, but is it really fitness? How much carryover to real life situations does this type of training really have? I am 34 myself, trained acrobatics all through my 20's off and on. I got pretty good at hand balancing, but it bothered my wrists a lot. Now I never really do hand stands. I changed my training to running again, I run barefoot and do some basic parkour. I climb, I do a little muaythai, and swim a lot too. And I feel better than ever. No more brute force powering through movements, no more trying to lift HEAVY ass weights, no more trying to perform for anyone, just living life and enjoying staying fit in the outdoors. I can't do muscle ups on rings, I can't stand on one hand, and I can't squat hundreds of pounds, but I can run barefoot on rough terrain, I'm a strong swimmer, and I can defend myself reasonably well if need be. I just wish I gave up trying to impress people at an earlier age and just lived life. Chasing perfection in movement is a fool's errand.

Full rupture would not regenerate! As shown by the asymmetry at the end! Fortunately his clavicular head seams still attached. The cost is strength loss, but function remain ok, as there are some people genetically predisposed to be born without pectoral muscles

Are you sure it was pectoralis major rupture ? Maybe it was just a tear. I don't understand how this tendon can attach itself again without surgery to fix it

Keep moving it gently through all ranges, avoid medication so you can hear your body talking to you. Ankle circles etc and moderate load, just listen to your body
