Ойын-сауық

Johnny Ringo is perhaps best known for his life in Tombstone and his association with the Cochise County Cowboys. Ringo also had a confrontation with Doc Holliday and was a suspect in some of the Earp family crimes.

Rhetty, that was the tree they found his body leaned up against..I was there in 2003 and at that time the fallen limb was standing , there was no chain link fence and you had to knock on the owners door of his house to ask permission to see the grave..he told me that the oak tree was the same one where Ringo was found.. another great video

I've known about this grave for decades now. When I had seen it before that fence was not around it. It was more of an open field from what I remember but I could tell the fence was a new one. I do like what he has done and I'm glad he has it open to the public the way he does. They aren't all like that. It's quite a trek out in the middle of nowhere and if you're not from the area then this would be the only reason you are out there. Thank you for watching and commenting Brian!

As I understand the tree there is the tree Ringo''s body was leaning against. I have always wondered why he was buried on the spot he was found, and not transported to a nearby grave yard. You have done an outstanding video here and I appreciate your time and effort. Many thumbs up to the property owner for creating this site and allowing tourist to visit. Really an excellent, interesting video and a beautiful historic site!!! Just a note: Back in 1965 I was in the 5th grade. We were assigned to do a book report on our favorite historic person. I did mine on Johnny Ringo. The teacher said I normally would have received an "A", but since I did it on an outlaw bad person I only got a "C". I guess I was considered a "Wild Child" of the class, and was sent to the principal's office to discuss why I did my report on an outlaw. I even had to talk to the school therapist. I forget what I said in my defence, but I guess they all thought I was gonna turn out to be an outlaw too...😅🤣🙄

Nice that you could be there with the perfect weather, no wind, sunset. I could just imagine - it must’ve been surreal. Also nice that the owners let people in like that, hopefully people respect the property like you did. Great coverage of Johnny Ringo’s early life, most people don’t talk about that. And correct, neither Wyatt Earp nor Doc Holliday killed him, rather best evidence quoted from that rancher’s descendant that owns that property was that it was Frank Buckskin Leslie who did it, in the unwilling company of Billy Claiborne. Great coverage!!

Thank you for watching my friend. I think the new chain link fence is a result of people doing things that the sign said not to do. There is always someone to ruin it for everyone else. But I'm glad I could see it. I know there multiple theories on what happened but I'm not sure we will ever know the truth on it.

I agree. I can't imagine finding people camping out and building fires on the land or hiking and leaving the gate open so cattle get out. I had no idea the fence had been put up but I could tell it was new. I sort of expected it to be more like Belle Starr's hike in to her grave.

Well, all I know is that the tree that is to the left of the historical marker, is not a black oak tree, but the tree that is just behind the grave on the other side of the fence is a black oak. The news reports of the time said he was found in the fork of a black oak. If you look close you see two forks of the black oak that looks large enough for someone to sit in. Maybe they put the fence in front of the tree to preserve it?

  • @RhettyforHistory

It does look like they put the fence around that tree to include it in the grave and story. With the other trees down inside and outside of the fence I had no idea if the actual tree was there. I remembered that the tree he was found up against was an Oak but couldn't remember what kind. To me those leaves of the tree inside the fence didn't look like an Oak. I didn't study the ones outside of the fence too much. Thank you for watching and helping out out on the trees!

It is tough but more so I feel like on his family. I am actually good with everything now. Sure I will miss him and the memories we shared as well as those in the future but I definitely have closure. I know I do not sound good in the video but there were dust storms as I was traveling and then just a change in the climate combined with different flowers blooming made some sort of allergy thing happen. I felt good but I know I didn't sound the best. There were a lot of people that wanted to hear stories about him so I shared those with anyone willing to hear them. Some of it was in front of everyone and some of it was individually so it really took a strain on my voice. I'm into cemeteries and graves as you well know so I'm definitely not a stranger to them. I grieved and I suppose there could be more and I'm not afraid to recognize that or share that as it comes up. But I really feel at peace with it all. Being able to stay until they finished his gravesite was sort of my last goodbye to him and most certainly brought closure. This is more that I would like to share on him and the experience but it is all so fresh for the family and friends. Since they have not placed the marker on his grave I do plan on going out there next summer and visiting his grave. At that time I will share more about him as well as why I feel at peace now. He was a good sailor, father, friend and man. I will definitely never forget him and his legacy is certainly being carried on. His daughter is going into the Air Force so I plan on being there for her when she graduates boot camp. I'm proud of her and I know her father would be too.

I think he used to require permission for sure. I think it's an open invitation now with the fence there. Assuming you follow the rules. I'm not sure if the fence went up because of the pandemic and he didn't want strangers knocking or if it was because of rule breakers. Might have been both. I am no longer in the area but I will certainly have a story on Mr. Earp. I was at his location right before this one.

Great story Rhetty. The movie "Tombstone" got some of it right but it's good to separate fact from fiction in a case like this. The Old West had some fascinating characters. The challenge today is searching for the truth about those people. What Ron is saying about Frank Buckskin Leslie, kind of makes me wonder if a bounty was out for Ringo. Or maybe it was a vendetta killing? We'll probably never know. And that is what makes the Legends of the Old West more compelling.

I think he made everyone in town upset and at times I would bet he even made the cowboys upset. He was sort his own man and rubbed everyone the wrong way so there are a lot of possibilities of different people. The suicide is also a strong possibility considering he had been speaking of it. Some of his family members maintain that is what happened because many of them have battle mental health in the family. Medications would not have been available back them. One thing we can count on is that Hollywood got it wrong. After that it's pretty much a toss up.

I'm not sure if there was a special spot he used to take you or the family but sometimes just going to places like that can be therapeutic as well as honoring his memory and legacy. I hope you able to find some peace. I'll be thinking about you.
